A Quid Pro Quo In Plain Sight? | Morning Joe | MSNBC - YouTube
Channel: MSNBC
[0]
okay we begin with what appears to be
[2]
another instance of quid pro quo by
[4]
President Trump there's a lot to get to
[6]
so we're just diving in it's the same
[8]
issue that got him impeached in the
[10]
first place before a meeting with New
[12]
York Governor Andrew Cuomo yesterday
[14]
President Trump put out a tweet that
[16]
appeared to link his administration's
[19]
decision to freeze New York's access to
[21]
the trusted traveler program with a
[23]
demand that the state drop a myriad of
[26]
lawsuits against him and his
[28]
administration it's just doing it in
[30]
plain sight why not right
[32]
he wrote this I'm seeing Governor Cuomo
[36]
today at the White House and he must
[37]
understand that national security far
[39]
exceeds politics New York must stop all
[42]
of its unnecessary lawsuits and
[45]
harassment start cleaning itself up and
[48]
lowering taxes yeah New York's Attorney
[52]
General Letitia James has issued a
[54]
subpoena for Trump's financial records
[56]
and has filed a number of lawsuits
[58]
against the Trump administration and the
[61]
Trump Organization she responded to the
[64]
president tweet writing when you stop
[65]
violating the rights and liberties of
[67]
all New Yorkers we will stand down until
[70]
then we have a duty and responsibility
[72]
to defend the Constitution and the rule
[75]
of law by the way I filed the lawsuits
[78]
not the governor gosh I'm just wondering
[82]
it's just so weird what where you see
[85]
happening here and I wonder if anyone
[87]
could have seen this coming queue house
[89]
impeachment manager Hakeem Jeffries from
[92]
just two weeks ago what we have alleged
[95]
in this case is that the president
[100]
solicited a personal political benefit
[105]
in exchange for an official act
[108]
solicited dirt on a political opponent
[113]
in exchange for the release of 391
[117]
million dollars in military aid
[119]
solicited dirt in exchange for a White
[121]
House meeting and if this Senate were to
[124]
say that's acceptable then precisely as
[128]
was outlined in that question could take
[131]
place all across
[133]
America in the context of the next
[136]
election and any election grants
[140]
allocated to cities or towns or
[144]
municipalities across the country but
[146]
the president could say you're not going
[148]
to get that money mr. mayor
[154]
mrs. County Executive
[157]
mrs. town supervisor unless you endorsed
[161]
me for re-election president could say
[166]
that to any governor of our 50 states
[171]
that's unacceptable
[173]
that cannot be allowed to happen in our
[176]
democratic republic Chuck Rosenberg it
[180]
seemed so ludicrous when Hakeem Jeffries
[182]
made that example of what potentially
[185]
could happen and yet as of yesterday it
[188]
has what's the recourse what's your take
[191]
moving forward well first of all you
[193]
know it's not that hard to predict that
[195]
the president will be illogical and
[197]
petulant on mica and by the way I don't
[201]
know if you can put his tweet back up
[202]
but there is an a-rank and consistency
[206]
within it first he says that national
[208]
security is much more important than
[210]
politics
[211]
and the very next sentence there's the
[214]
ranked politics right in the very next
[216]
sentence after talking about the primacy
[218]
of national security there comes the
[221]
threat if he doesn't get what he wants a
[223]
cessation to the lawsuits that have been
[225]
filed against him and his organization's
[228]
by New York State then he's going to
[230]
exact revenge
[231]
mr. Jeffries was spot on I give him some
[234]
credit for that but this has been a
[236]
pattern that we have seen over and over
[238]
and over again and I think it's deeply
[240]
disturbing so Jonathan Lemire so much
[243]
has happened we started with this there
[245]
are many other things that happened
[247]
yesterday that we could have started
[248]
with given the Attorney General's
[250]
comments later in the day which we'll
[252]
get to but we've got a situation now
[256]
where the government presidents
[258]
appearing to be issuing quid pro quos in
[261]
real time on Twitter what are you
[264]
hearing from the White House and from
[265]
your sources in Washington
[267]
yeah but he's doing so in plain sight
[269]
there's very little attempt to cover
[271]
this now we know that the president has
[272]
had sort of a pretty contentious
[273]
relationship with Governor Cuomo and
[275]
most of the New York state officials in
[277]
the state because most of them are
[278]
Democrat and of course there been a
[279]
series of investigations that the state
[281]
has run in addition to what's been going
[283]
on in the House of Representatives so
[285]
that is something that the president has
[286]
been irritated about for a while let's
[288]
recall of course he even renounced his
[291]
citizenship of the state of New York is
[292]
now a considered a citizen of Florida in
[295]
part because of how upset he was with
[296]
how things are going on with those
[298]
officials now what he's happening here
[300]
is is exactly representative Jeffries
[303]
implied this seems to be a quid pro quo
[305]
offer right in front this was he took
[307]
away this this program the Global Entry
[308]
Program a few weeks ago he's now
[310]
suggesting he's trying to put it back on
[311]
the table
[312]
if these investigations stop and he gets
[314]
a cheap shot at the governor's brother
[315]
while he's at it
[317]
now with the governor there is no deal
[318]
struck yesterday from what we've heard
[320]
certainly Letitia James the Attorney
[322]
General here in New York is one who
[323]
spoke out forcefully against it but this
[325]
is also a window into how the
[326]
president's feeling right now
[327]
post impeachment completely emboldened
[329]
unchecked we saw what's happened in the
[331]
few days after that verdict Lieutenant
[333]
Colonel VIN Minh marched out of the
[335]
White House yeah in front of the camera
[337]
so people could see ambassador Soglin
[338]
also relieved of his duties
[340]
you know he's weighed in on the Roger
[342]
stone sentencing which I know we'll get
[343]
to a little more in a moment
[344]
and that's just the tip of the iceberg
[346]
he has told people around him as we've
[347]
written this week that he feels like not
[349]
only did he survive impeachment but he's
[351]
come out stronger than ever because no
[353]
one in the Republican Party except for
[355]
Mitt Romney
[356]
it's up to him so we've seen a pattern
[358]
here and Michael Steele it it's the
[361]
president can't take a win he can't take
[364]
a win when he's gotten his way when he's
[366]
gotten through something he can't take a
[367]
win he actually doubled out doubles down
[370]
and gets worse which leads me to Susan
[374]
Collins I believe saying well I believe
[375]
the president has learned a lesson well
[379]
you know he's doing it again in plain
[382]
sight the Republicans own this but do
[386]
they care no they don't and you know
[389]
large measure because you know they've
[392]
saddled up with the president in terms
[393]
of you know the way all of these things
[396]
play out you know on the first part of
[399]
this you know you get
[400]
on the other side of impeachment and
[401]
what you see is the president now
[404]
wanting to exact his his revenge he
[407]
doesn't he wants to settle the score
[409]
this is not over until he says it's over
[412]
until he feels that he's made his point
[415]
after those who you know perceive has
[419]
come after him have you have done so so
[421]
you have that Republicans still sit
[423]
there stymied by the whole thing will
[426]
you have a Susan Collins telling us oh
[428]
well you know he's gonna learn from this
[430]
the president doesn't learn anything
[431]
from these exercises he sees him he sets
[436]
his own course so you know as I've said
[439]
before the important thing Mika is is
[441]
what do we learn from it yeah what do we
[444]
get away from this because that's the
[446]
important part of this we know Trump is
[448]
not going to learn anything cuz he
[449]
doesn't want to I mean he said his
[451]
courses mine in a certain direction so
[453]
what are we taking away from this and
[455]
what will be our next move as government
[458]
as citizens as the state of New York and
[463]
and how do we now adapt on this playing
[466]
field if you will to what the president
[469]
is doing with the with the you know the
[471]
perp walks of of career soldiers from
[476]
from service et cetera
