Realities of Running Antminer L3+, Crypto Mining Farm. Power, Noise, Profit. - YouTube
Channel: SPACE DESIGN WAREHOUSE
[0]
a little while ago i made a video about
[1]
the realities of running an s19j pro and
[4]
i don't think people who are new to asic
[6]
mining know just how power hungry loud
[8]
and hot these machines can be but if
[10]
you're looking at an l3 plus or an l3
[12]
plus plus instead there's good news all
[14]
around they're smaller cheaper to buy
[16]
cheaper to run a significant amount
[18]
quieter and they put out about a third
[20]
as much heat as the big boys i'm here to
[22]
talk about the realities of running an
[23]
antminer l3 plus my name is nicholas
[26]
johnson and this is the space warehouse
[28]
the bitmain antminer l3 plus is built to
[30]
do just one thing mine cryptocurrencies
[33]
using the script mining algorithm this
[35]
miner will dig up a variety of coins
[37]
using script currently the most
[38]
profitable being merge mining litecoin
[40]
and dogecoin although depending on what
[42]
moment you refresh the online
[44]
calculators out there sometimes just
[46]
throwing the hash power on nice hash is
[48]
just as profitable we'll start with the
[49]
money when measuring in us dollars and
[51]
this is only going to be true for right
[53]
now because at every moment the
[55]
profitability is changing based on the
[56]
difficulty and the price of the coins
[59]
but right now after paying for
[60]
electricity one of these machines will
[61]
bring home about five to six dollars a
[63]
day equivalent in cryptocurrency which
[65]
is about 150 bucks a month there is an
[67]
enormous supply of antminer l3s on the
[69]
market right now due to china shutting
[71]
down a big portion of their operations
[73]
people are selling them on ebay and
[74]
amazon and all the forums right now on a
[76]
pretty big markup because of the current
[78]
craze in the price of bitcoin or in this
[80]
case litecoin that we're experiencing
[82]
right now what a time to be alive on to
[84]
the power the regular outlets that look
[86]
like this in your house or in your
[88]
garage will send 120 volts of power into
[90]
whatever you plug into them and there
[92]
are typically three exceptions to that
[93]
the plug for your dryer your water
[95]
heater and the one for your stove those
[97]
run at 240 volts but they will look
[99]
obviously different and you probably
[100]
don't have a plug that'll fit into them
[102]
fun fact if you're in a commercial
[103]
setting the power running through your
[105]
walls will either be at 120 volts or 208
[107]
volts instead of 240 volts but that
[109]
makes no difference to the miner luckily
[111]
though you don't have to know anything
[112]
about any of that because the l three
[114]
plus and l three plus plus will run
[116]
perfectly reliably on 120 volts 208
[118]
volts or 240 volts this is true of most
[121]
computer power supplies as well and
[123]
sometimes people will use those to power
[124]
these machines that means you can
[126]
literally plug in one of these machines
[127]
just about anywhere if you have zero
[129]
understanding about breakers and amps
[131]
and watts and power in general there's
[133]
just the simplest bit of math you'll
[134]
need to do if you're going to share the
[136]
circuit with anything else if the plug
[138]
looks like this you have 15 amps
[139]
available to you this plug runs at 120
[142]
volts and therefore you can push 1800
[144]
watts through it before it'll pop the
[145]
breaker your l3 plus will use between 6
[148]
and 8 amps which equates to between 800
[150]
and 1000 watts depending on the model
[152]
that you get so there's quite a bit of
[154]
extra headroom on that outlet if your
[156]
plug looks like this instead you've got
[158]
20 amps on that circuit that means you
[160]
can send 2 400 watts through it before
[162]
it will blow the breaker you can safely
[163]
run two machines on a plug that looks
[165]
like this the little line on the side is
[167]
the indication when you get into 208 or
[169]
240 volt circuits say if you live in
[172]
europe or if you had an electrician come
[173]
put a dedicated line in for your miners
[175]
your l3 plus will use the same number of
[177]
watts but half the number of amps amps
[179]
are the important thing to consider when
[181]
it comes to your breaker panel so if
[182]
your electrician tells you you have a 30
[184]
amp breaker on a 240 volt circuit your
[187]
l3 plus is only going to use about 4
[188]
amps go buy some more one of the
[190]
realities of owning an antminer l3 plus
[192]
is that you're eventually going to go
[194]
buy more ant miner l3 pluses one of the
[196]
easiest ways to power a bunch of miners
[198]
is with a pdu a power distribution unit
[201]
the plug end that goes into your miner
[202]
is called a c13 you'll recognize this
[205]
plug end as basically everything that
[207]
goes into monitors and printers and the
[209]
psu from your desktop pc these pdus will
[211]
have a whole row of sockets for a c13 to
[214]
c14 power cable very cheap on amazon
[216]
i'll link it in the description below so
[218]
you can plug a single pdu into the wall
[220]
and from it you can power a bunch of
[222]
asic miners i also power my bigger
[225]
pros this way because each one of them
[227]
requires two power cables each one of
[229]
those miners gets its own pdu that it
[231]
just shares with one l3 plus because the
[233]
s19j pro wants 20 amps just for itself
[236]
now that you've got it powered you're
[237]
gonna need to put it somewhere the l3
[239]
plus is not a quiet machine it's not as
[241]
loud as the bigger miners but it's not
[243]
anywhere near as quiet as like gpu
[245]
mining or really anything else that you
[247]
have plugged in at a normal house if you
[249]
have a family or roommates or if you
[250]
live with your significant other you're
[252]
not going to get away with plugging this
[253]
in inside the house i'd say it's about
[255]
as loud and a similar pitch to a hair
[257]
dryer just running all the time you
[259]
don't never shut it off the l3 plus
[261]
operating temperature is between 0 and
[263]
40 degrees celsius which is 32 to 104
[266]
degrees fahrenheit if you were to leave
[268]
even a single one of these just alone in
[270]
a room and shut the door it'll pretty
[271]
quickly heat up that room and just turn
[273]
itself off it's got a safety feature so
[275]
it doesn't overheat and in the summer
[276]
time you're going to want to be careful
[277]
even just putting it in your garage
[279]
unless you're ventilating to the
[280]
outdoors because it'll heat the place up
[282]
eventually they don't require air
[283]
conditioned air just rapidly moving air
[285]
and recycling the same air is generally
[287]
a bad idea you'll want to ventilate its
[289]
heat to the outside which also means
[291]
bringing outside air inside i've seen
[293]
some people piping the hot air into
[295]
their hvac system as a closed loop which
[297]
is clever but the noise will follow the
[299]
heat in there so be ready for that
[300]
ventilating air outdoors if you put a
[302]
fan in a window and blow it outdoors is
[305]
going to create a vacuum in whatever
[306]
space you're doing that from if it's
[308]
your house that means that air is gonna
[309]
have to be replaced from somewhere and
[311]
if you're not providing that air then
[312]
it's just gonna come in through the
[314]
windows and doors and microscopic cracks
[316]
in your attic or just wherever it can
[317]
it's just sort of a reality of physics
[319]
so if you're ventilating to the outdoors
[321]
from a room inside your house it would
[323]
be best to replace the air in that room
[325]
from the same room from outside so that
[327]
you're not sucking air conditioned air
[328]
into that room from the rest of your
[330]
house and causing a bigger burden on
[331]
your hvac system or your electric bill
[333]
or both hot air out fresh air back in at
[336]
my setup i have a big industrial fan
[338]
built into an exterior door of my
[340]
warehouse in this small dedicated room
[342]
the fans designed to replace the entire
[344]
volume of air in there with cool
[346]
filtered air every six seconds or so
[348]
then at the front of the warehouse two
[349]
very large doors are cracked just enough
[351]
from the floor to allow that same amount
[353]
of air to replace it you might even call
[354]
it the perfect setup the industrial fan
[356]
may seem a little overkill but i'm
[358]
running about 13 000 watts through there
[360]
and so it's creating a lot of heat that
[361]
has to get dumped out continuously if
[364]
you can solve for heat and noise and
[366]
have some unused circuits at wherever
[367]
you want to run these machines then you
[369]
found yourself a great little source of
[370]
passive income litecoin has been around
[372]
almost as long as bitcoin and it doesn't
[374]
seem to be going away anytime soon in
[376]
fact their prices seem to sort of follow
[378]
the same shape on the graph dogecoin is
[380]
maybe a little more suspect but there
[382]
are several other coins that use the
[384]
script algorithm to mine so it looks
[386]
like these little ant miners that were
[387]
first released in 2017 still have a few
[390]
years left of profitability
