What If Your Ex-Spouse Dies Before Receiving Social Security - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
what if your spouse or your ex-spouse
[2]
dies before they ever started drawing
[5]
their social security how does that
[7]
impact your ability to draw spousal
[10]
benefits off of the spouse stay tuned
[14]
[Music]
[15]
[Applause]
[18]
so social security bases the amount of
[21]
money you're going to get off your top
[23]
35 highest years of earnings okay you
[27]
don't have to work 35 years you only
[28]
have to work 10 years but they're going
[31]
to base it off your top 35 highest years
[34]
so as you keep working these high years
[37]
will knock off these low years okay so
[39]
what happens if you look at your
[40]
statement today your statement is going
[42]
to give you a projection
[44]
based on the fact what you're making now
[46]
based on if you keep working and that
[48]
goes all the way up here until your
[50]
retirement so i get people to go
[52]
hey what they projected i'm not kidding
[54]
well that's because they projected it
[56]
and you actually started working half
[57]
time the last five years right or
[60]
so that's that's why it's a projection
[63]
before you actually start taking it okay
[65]
so i want to take it off of my ex-spouse
[69]
a lot of you are in this position and
[71]
you don't want to ask your spouse hey
[73]
how much are you going to make how much
[74]
are you going to be able to draw right
[76]
you don't have a relationship you can't
[77]
just pick up the phone call him
[79]
you can pick up the phone and call your
[81]
local social security office i said
[83]
local don't call the national number
[85]
you'll be online over an hour and you
[87]
get irritated call your local office any
[89]
local office in the country call early
[91]
in the morning and ask them now they're
[93]
not just going to tell you some guy's
[94]
information unless you can prove you
[96]
have a right to that information which
[98]
means you're going to have to fax them
[100]
your marriage
[102]
license it's going to be a certified
[103]
copy you have to fax them your divorce
[105]
decree okay
[107]
then they know that you have the ability
[110]
to access his information and they're
[111]
going to tell you
[112]
how much you're going to be able to draw
[114]
off of your spouse or your ex-spouse
[117]
when you can't talk to you cannot draw
[118]
off your spouse or your ex-spouse until
[121]
he is at least 62.
[124]
okay but he dies at 61.
[128]
how much can you draw so a lot of people
[130]
are saying well i can't draw at all
[131]
because he died before he was eligible
[133]
no
[134]
you're still going to be able to
[136]
he's already paid in for all those years
[138]
right
[139]
so they will give you the how much money
[142]
that he
[144]
pool of money that he built up and you
[146]
will be able to draw off of that so
[148]
you'll you're a survivor now because
[150]
he's passed away survivor either you're
[152]
married it was your spouse or it was
[154]
your qualifying ex-spouse i mean you
[156]
were married at least 10 years you're
[158]
not currently remarried you've watched
[159]
my other videos you know that you're
[161]
able to get a hundred percent of what he
[164]
was actually drawing
[167]
okay so this guy didn't draw yet he died
[169]
before he was drawing
[171]
but if he was actually drawing he was
[173]
drawing at 62 that means he took it
[175]
early he wasn't his full retirement age
[178]
if he would have waited till his full
[179]
retirement age over here but
[183]
closer to 67. that would have been a
[185]
hundred percent of what he could have
[186]
drawn off of his own contributions
[189]
in which case you could have gotten 50
[191]
of that 100 but he didn't he drew it as
[194]
soon as he possibly could all the way up
[196]
here at age 62. he drew it early so he's
[199]
going to get about a 30 reduction he
[201]
dies
[202]
so you're only eligible to get what he
[204]
was actually getting you're gonna get a
[207]
you can get a hundred percent of what he
[209]
was actually getting
[211]
which is reduced
[212]
now
[213]
this is the i gotcha i gotcha if you
[216]
draw it early too you're not your full
[218]
retirement age there's going to be
[219]
another
[220]
reduction because you're taking it early
[223]
you're not waiting till your full
[224]
retirement age so if you want to max out
[226]
your survivor benefits
[228]
on your spouse or your ex-spouse you
[231]
wait until you reach your full
[232]
retirement age you can put it in google
[235]
put your birthday and ask what's your
[236]
full retirement age google will tell you
[238]
but it's going to be
[240]
66 in so many months if you're born
[242]
after 1960 it will be everybody levels
[245]
out will all be full retirement age at
[248]
67. so i hope this video helped if you
[250]
have more questions about survivor
[252]
