[0]
now to the latest on the corona virus
[2]
here are three things to know about
[3]
right now number one president Trump
[5]
officially begins withdrawing the u.s.
[7]
from the World Health Organization the
[9]
president says he severed ties because
[11]
the organization did not act quickly
[13]
enough when the outbreak began in China
[15]
the White House says the withdrawal will
[17]
take effect next July number two
[20]
retailers are urging governors to
[22]
require everyone to wear a mask they say
[25]
different local mandates require
[28]
confusing information and make it
[30]
difficult to enforce those rules the
[33]
retail industry leaders Association
[34]
represents major chains like Walmart and
[37]
Target and number three a new model
[40]
predicts more than 200,000 kovat 19
[42]
deaths in the u.s. by November the virus
[45]
is now responsible for over one hundred
[47]
and thirty-one thousand deaths here in
[48]
the US out of nearly three million cases
[51]
worldwide five hundred and forty-three
[53]
thousand people have died Texas reported
[59]
10,000 new coronavirus cases yesterday
[62]
setting a single-day record in Houston
[64]
alone we counted for about 10% of those
[67]
statewide numbers here's Chris Koster -
[69]
break it down Tuesday's new cases in the
[73]
city of Houston represent a change in
[75]
the trend the more than 1,000 new cases
[77]
are the highest single day case count in
[80]
the city since the pandemic began other
[82]
days with more than one thousand
[84]
reported new cases included multiple
[86]
days of test results in Harris County an
[89]
additional four hundred and seventy five
[91]
cases make it also the third highest
[94]
reporting day for the county since this
[96]
all started the daily cases go up and
[98]
down from one day to the next so it's
[100]
important to look at the average of new
[103]
cases over the course of two weeks to
[105]
get a better idea of the trend numbers
[107]
from our 20 county regions Public Health
[110]
Department's show that average new cases
[112]
are up substantially compared to three
[114]
weeks ago that means more and more
[116]
people are testing positive than in
[118]
weeks past
[119]
more people are going to the hospital
[121]
with kovat 19 as well in our area and
[124]
statewide Tuesday Texas reported the
[127]
most hospitalizations for kovat 19 since
[130]
the pandemic began right now there are
[132]
nine thousand two hundred and eighty six
[134]
people in hospitals all over the state
[136]
battling coronavirus yes those numbers
[139]
go up and down every day too but this is
[141]
the highest number reported yet public
[143]
health leaders have said it over and
[145]
over again to turn these trends around
[147]
we need to be diligent by not only
[149]
wearing masks but also staying at least
[151]
six feet away from people outside our
[153]
household standing for Houston Chris
[155]
Kosta KHOU 11 News Chris thank you as
[159]
cases rise researchers are getting a
[161]
better understanding of the type of
[163]
strain affecting patients in our area
[165]
this morning there's new evidence that a
[167]
mutated strain of kovat 19 is more
[170]
transmissible than the original wuhan
[172]
strain data suggests the new strain is
[175]
more contagious but not more lethal
[176]
public health officials are closely
[178]
watching whether or not the World Health
[180]
Organization will acknowledge that Kovan
[182]
19 is now an airborne virus that is
[186]
another game changer if the virus has
[188]
become as muche the point roots now
[190]
transmissible from an airborne
[191]
standpoint you know then then you know
[195]
we go we've got a whole other set of
[197]
problems on our hands in terms of how
[198]
ease it's transmitted by the World
[200]
Health Organization also says it's
[202]
reviewing the evidence and we'll release
[204]
an update in a few days the Texas
[209]
Education Agency released its new
[210]
guidelines for the upcoming school year
[213]
parents will get to choose whether they
[214]
want to send their kids back to school
[216]
or if they want to continue remote
[218]
learning our Matt Doherty has those
[220]
details here's the breakdown from the TE
[224]
a first location this upcoming school
[226]
year all parents will be able to decide
[228]
where they want their kids to learn
[230]
daily on campus learning will be
[232]
available for parents who want their
[233]
kids in the classroom if they don't
[235]
parents can choose to have instruction
[237]
through remote learning at home the kids
[239]
can't go back and forth though parents
[242]
will have to make a final decision on
[243]
one or the other for each six to nine
[245]
week grading period
[247]
a second we look at health and safety
[249]
the TE a says anyone coming to campus
[252]
must be screened before they're allowed
[253]
inside this includes kids teachers and
[256]
visitors mask orders will apply to
[258]
everyone at school so kids will have to
[260]
wear their masks all day long while
[263]
they're inside last we look at who the
[265]
TE a says will have to pay for all of
[268]
this
[268]
according to the agency reimbursement
[270]
for kovat 19 expenses will be paid by
[272]
the TE a tens of millions of PPE will be
[276]
provided to the school systems at no
[277]
costs to the schools free online
[279]
learning resources will be provided for
[282]
remote instruction and the TE a promises
[284]
it'll help bridge the digital lag for
[286]
students who will be learning from home
[288]
Matt Doherty KC 11 News Matt thank you
[294]
and parents if you want to take a closer
[296]
look at those guidelines just head to
[298]
our website KHOU dot-com where you can
[300]
also read statements from area school
[302]
districts reacting to the announcement
[304]
the chairman of the Texas Republican
[307]
Party says their in-person convention
[309]
will happen in Houston next week mayor
[311]
Sylvester Turner requested that the
[313]
party reconsider and hold a virtual
[316]
convention instead the mayor sent a
[318]
letter listing requirements for the
[320]
gathering including mandatory face
[321]
coverings the state GOP chair says they
[324]
developed their own safety plan and have
[326]
scaled back events if at any point in
[329]
time the requirements that we are
[332]
outlining are not adhere to then the
[336]
health department monitors have the
[339]
authority to close the convention down
[343]
we have changed up the schedule so
[345]
almost all the elections happen on a
[347]
single day so the people can come in
[349]
just for that one day if that's the
[352]
thing they care the most about James
[354]
Dickey insists a virtual convention
[356]
would limit input from thousands of
[358]
delegates Texas Democrats held their
[361]
statewide convention virtually last
[363]
month
[364]
Houston hospitals are filling up with
[366]
kovat 19 patients and putting a strain
[368]
on health care workers but help from out
[371]
of state has arrived about 120 travel
[374]
nurses have been deployed to hospitals
[376]
across the region dr. David Perce with
[379]
the Houston Health Department says he
[381]
hopes they achieve two things I hope
[383]
that they will help us expand the
[385]
capacity and how many patients we can
[387]
take care of at any one time
[388]
doctor purse also hopes they provide
[391]
relief to workers on the front lines
