How to Replace a Dryer Cord that is Wrong (3 vs. 4 Prong Plug) - YouTube

[3]
Got a little problem today we're gonna take a look at
[5]
and show ya how to fix it.
[7]
I picked up a used electric dryer
[10]
and came to plug it in.
[13]
The electric outlet looks like this,
[17]
but the plug looks like that.
[19]
Notice these are sloped.
[21]
This one'll plug in just fine,
[24]
but then the other two with the angles
[25]
are not gonna plug in.
[27]
So, what does it mean and what's the deal?
[31]
Well, the good news is, it's fairly easy to take care of.
[34]
This comes about because in 2000,
[37]
the national electric code changed
[38]
and electric dryers now need four plugs.
[43]
They have two grounds because of electronics
[46]
and other issues and reasons
[49]
and so, you can buy a replacement plug
[52]
and rewire it.
[53]
It's pretty easy to do.
[55]
Obviously, make sure from a safety standpoint,
[57]
nothing's plugged in, you don't have any electricity
[59]
and you can get this changed out.
[63]
I'll include a link on Amazon
[65]
to where you can pick up a new plug.
[67]
Pretty straightforward and easy.
[71]
We're gonna do a couple things here.
[73]
First, I'm gonna get this loosened up
[75]
and depending on the new plug you buy,
[77]
you may need to buy a replacement bracket here.
[81]
This just helps hold the plug in place
[83]
and prevents it from pulling out
[85]
if somebody's moving the dryer.
[90]
So I'm gonna
[94]
work these out.
[97]
Get those out.
[99]
Now, I need to take off the panel here.
[109]
Alright, you might need a socket for this.
[111]
This one was loosened up already.
[116]
With the cover plate off, I can see in
[119]
and see my wires.
[120]
Now remember, safety.
[122]
Make sure there's no power going to
[125]
your electric devices when you're workin' on em.
[128]
I've got it unplugged.
[131]
So, now we're gonna get these three bolts
[134]
taken off.
[151]
Now, once you got the bolts off,
[153]
you can take these wires out.
[154]
Be careful as you take the bolts off.
[156]
Don't let em drop down inside.
[157]
Otherwise, you'll need to lift up down below
[160]
to get it, get at em.
[164]
We'll get these out.
[166]
Now, this change came about
[169]
with the National Electric Code making a change.
[172]
They're separating the neutral
[174]
and the ground and so, we're going to
[177]
remove this strap that's attaching the ground
[180]
of the machine frame to this neutral wire
[183]
and that way, we can attach our green ground down here.
[187]
White and then red and black on the others.
[190]
Alright, so, just in case we need to use this
[194]
strap in the future, I'm just gonna
[196]
bend it in half.
[198]
So we've got four different wires.
[200]
We're gonna hook the black to the black here.
[203]
The green is going to go to the ground.
[207]
So it's gonna secure under the ground frame.
[210]
White with the white wire
[212]
and this red one with the blue wire.
[217]
K, we'll tighten these down.
[219]
Get em tightened nice and tight.
[237]
Before I finish up with this wire,
[240]
we wanna make sure this isn't dangling out
[242]
and don't want it to get pulled out.
[244]
So, you'll need to work these clips in.
[248]
This cable came with some new ones
[250]
that are round and sized for this specific,
[256]
specific new plug cord.
[260]
Alright, the cable is held in there securely.
[262]
So, it's good.
[271]
Last thing we have left is to put the cover back on.
[274]
There you have it.
[275]
We've replaced the old three-prong cord
[279]
with the new four-prong cord
[281]
and now it'll work in the new house.
