Copper Stocks (FCX, RIO, SCC, HBM, TRQ, COPX) - YouTube
Channel: Stephanie Talks Money
[0]
Hi everyone, it's Stephanie.
[1]
Today we're going to be talking about copper!
[4]
Copper is at all-time highs right now.
[8]
It has not been this high since 2010 and 2011.
[12]
And some are saying it's the next hot commodity
[15]
and its rise will continue.
[17]
So why is copper such a big deal right now?
[19]
Well, first of all, there's聽
an increase in copper demand.
[22]
Copper is mostly used for electric聽
delivery, like wires and cables.
[26]
It's also had a boom because of electric vehicles.
[30]
There is more copper in an electric vehicle
[32]
than there is in a gasoline vehicle.
[35]
With the drive for clean energy,
[36]
and particularly electric vehicles,
[39]
there is going to be a need聽
for copper far into the future.
[43]
And the other thing that's causing聽
the price of copper to go up
[46]
is that it's becoming in short supply.
[49]
There are existing mines currently
[50]
but it takes years and years and years
[53]
to get permitting and build mines.
[56]
This means that even though聽
if a company discovers a mine,
[59]
it's going to take many, many years聽
before it's actually producing copper.
[63]
Because there's a lag in new mine production.
[66]
that means that there's less聽
product hitting the market
[69]
and that means it's in short supply.
[72]
An increase in demand and a decrease in supply
[75]
is the perfect formula for聽
an increase in copper prices.
[79]
Considering the growth that copper has had lately,
[81]
and the growth it's going to聽
continue to have in the future,
[84]
you might be thinking about investing in it.
[86]
If you want to invest in copper,
[88]
here are some stocks you can invest in.
[90]
The first is Freeport-McMoRan.
[92]
Freeport-McMoRan is a mining company聽
that mines copper, gold, and molybdenum.
[98]
It is an industry leader in the copper industry.
[101]
It currently has operations in North America,
[103]
South America, and Indonesia.
[105]
This company is focused on the clean聽
energy future that copper has in store.
[110]
It has just started expanding one聽
of its larger copper mines, Bagdad.
[114]
And that mine is estimated to聽
have an 80-year reserve life.
[119]
And, on average, Freeport-McMoRan's聽
reserve life is around 30 years.
[123]
And this company has reported several productions
[126]
and startups and ramp ups on all of its mines,
[129]
indicating that production聽
will increase in the future.
[133]
And its copper sales are expected to聽
increase over the next several years.
[138]
This company has a dividend of 7.5 cents a share,
[141]
which is a 0.73% dividend yield,
[144]
and this is paid quarterly.
[146]
Another copper miner is Rio Tinto.
[149]
Rio Tinto mines many materials such as聽
aluminum, copper, minerals, and ore.
[154]
It has operations and projects in the聽
US, Chile, Mongolia, and Australia.
[160]
It has two major operations:聽
Kennecott and Oyu Tolgoi.
[164]
And these two mines actually have the Copper Mark
[168]
which means the copper is responsibly produced.
[171]
Rio Tinto has a lot of exploration聽
and startups occurring at the moment,
[175]
so it's bound to continue to grow in the future.
[178]
Rio Tinto also has a dividend聽
and it's paid out twice a year,
[182]
so every six months.
[184]
Over the last several years, the dividend聽
payments have varied tremendously
[188]
from 50 cents to 4 dollars.
[190]
The dividend is always paid but聽
the amount is not consistent.
[194]
Another copper mining stock is聽
Southern Copper Corporation.
[198]
Their primary mine focus is copper,
[200]
but they also mine molybdenum, silver, and zinc.
[204]
Southern Copper has operations in Mexico and Peru.
[208]
And out of all the copper companies,
[210]
Southern Copper has the longest mine聽
life and the largest copper reserves.
[215]
Southern Copper has many plans
[217]
to increase its capital investments into its mines
[220]
and increase production over the next 10 years.
[223]
And one thing Southern Copper prides themselves on
[225]
is their strong dividend.
[227]
They currently have a聽
dividend of 70 cents a share,
[230]
which is a little over 4% dividend yield
[234]
and they pay that out every quarter.
[236]
Next up is Hudbay Minerals.
[238]
This is a mining company focused聽
on copper, gold, zinc, and silver.
[243]
It has copper projects in the US
[245]
and other projects in Canada and Peru.
[248]
And right now in the US,聽
[249]
it only has exploratory聽
and developmental projects.
[253]
Given that it's in the exploratory聽
and developmental phase
[256]
of many of its copper resources
[258]
it definitely projects growth聽
over the next several years.
[261]
Hudbay Minerals is looking to expand聽
its footprint in the copper industry.
[265]
It could be a good investment on聽
the speculation that it can grow
[269]
as its mines begin operation.
[271]
Hudbay Minerals does have a dividend
[273]
but it's small!
[274]
It's one cent a share every six months.
[278]
And another stock for you聽
is Turquoise Hill Resources.
[281]
This mining company is exclusively focused
[284]
on the mining of the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia.
[288]
They have 66% interest in the mine
[291]
and the Mongolian government聽
has the remaining interest.
[294]
Rio Tinto actually signed on聽
as a strategic partner in 2010
[298]
and has been managing the production聽
and development of the mine since.
[302]
Oyu Tolgoi has an expected mine life of 100 years.
[306]
That's longer than any mine.
[309]
And for all my Canadian friends out there,
[311]
you can invest in Copper Mountain.
[313]
Copper Mountain has 75% interest聽
in the Copper Mountain mine,
[317]
which is in British Columbia.
[319]
They've also started a聽
development project in Australia.
[322]
This could be a great stock to get聽
in on a company that's very small now
[326]
but is continuing to grow.
[328]
And for anyone looking for聽
an international investment,
[331]
you could invest in Jiangxi Copper.
[334]
They are the largest copper producer in China.
[337]
They have many operations for copper
[339]
including mining, smelting, and milling.
[342]
And they also produce copper聽
products from the copper they mine
[346]
including things like wires and cathodes.
[349]
And if you're looking for a broader聽
exposure into the copper industry
[352]
you can always invest in an ETF.
[355]
Tthe Global X Copper Miners ETF is perfect聽
for anyone looking for a copper ETF.
[360]
COPX currently has 33 holdings
[363]
and if you look at its聽
performance over the last 5 years
[366]
you'll see it's done pretty well.
[368]
This ETF also pays dividends twice a year.
[371]
This isn't all the copper聽
stocks that are out there.
[373]
There's many more
[374]
but this is just a short selection聽
that you can start researching.
[377]
So if you're interested in investing in copper,
[380]
take a look at one of these stocks.
[382]
With an increase in copper聽
demand and a decrease in supply
[386]
there's bound to be growth聽
for companies and investors.
