[3]
hi I'm Kimberly with the fat quarter
[6]
shop and we're here today with the did
[7]
toes from laundry basket quilt and she
[10]
has been showing us how to make a eight
[12]
point star so we started with the
[15]
beginner and I'm so excited for you to
[17]
show me how we can take this to the next
[18]
level we're learning the steps the 101
[21]
over eight point star is so important
[24]
because really you're gonna apply those
[26]
basic steps to any kind of stars you're
[29]
gonna do no matter what size how big how
[32]
many diamonds you're going to break
[34]
inside the diamond into it and this is
[37]
our basic star but let's look at this
[39]
one this one is from the gingerbread
[42]
tree a pattern and it's a really nice
[45]
quilt to practice the eight point star
[47]
because it's a smaller project and you
[49]
can just do one and set it up into this
[52]
really cute table topper and what I like
[56]
about this yes it's the diamonds it's
[59]
they're a little bit different than
[60]
normal diamonds there are two different
[63]
sizes of diamonds in it and what I did
[65]
is I took some fun fabrics and the
[69]
fabric are from Snowbird collection the
[71]
mystery block is from Snowbird
[73]
collection and I took sets of three and
[78]
not as the size of the strips and you
[80]
can refer for the sizes to the pattern
[82]
but not as they're smaller and a larger
[85]
size of the strips when you sew strips
[88]
together you want to gently offset so
[91]
that when you make nice cuts later on
[94]
with our 45 degree angle and a ruler I
[96]
have a set where I have a dark light and
[99]
a dark on the outside and a second set
[102]
where I have a dark and two lights on
[105]
the outside and we are gonna cut some
[110]
pieces from those strip sets and I have
[114]
already pre-cut some here for you and
[118]
we're gonna use the same techniques we
[119]
used in our first video on cutting using
[123]
the ruler and a roadway and a 45 degree
[125]
angle and now we can lay out our blocks
[129]
for our diamond right here and mine
[132]
next step will be putting the fabric
[135]
right sides together and do you plan
[138]
Kimberly I do
[139]
I love pinning too so I'm gonna put a
[142]
pin right here and right here and what
[145]
I'm trying to pin is making sure that
[148]
the transition between the colors are
[150]
really nice and perfect so I'm going to
[153]
put the pins when and then sew with a
[155]
quarter inch seam allowance once this is
[157]
sewn together its create a really fun
[161]
diamond and this is the diamond we're
[163]
going to put it into our low quilt and
[166]
the rest of the direction is exactly
[169]
like our 101 star once we have our
[172]
diamonds we're going to sew sets off to
[174]
push the seam allowance towards left so
[177]
sets of four clip the bunny ears to low
[180]
housekeeping keep on pushing seam
[182]
allowance towards left and then x marks
[185]
the spot for a perfect Center for our
[187]
diamonds and we're going to sew together
[190]
and be ready to set in the background in
[193]
this case I wanted to bring your
[195]
attention to it is our diamonds remember
[199]
in our beginner star we push our seam
[203]
allowances towards the star and that
[207]
work great for us because we want our
[209]
start to float on the background in this
[212]
case your seam allowance is going to be
[214]
pushed towards the background why
[216]
because you have seams that are coming
[219]
towards this piece of fabric and those
[221]
seams want to line nice and flat and
[223]
they're going to be pushing your seam
[225]
allowances towards the background fabric
[228]
instead of towards the star that's what
[231]
you wanted to do it in this case once
[233]
the star is completed put a little on
[236]
border on it set it into a low quilt and
[239]
practice Samoa eight point star let's
[242]
look at some other variation
[244]
I brought some stars to share with you
[246]
just some variation this one comes from
[249]
scrappy firework book and in this one
[252]
notice I broke the star diamonds into
[256]
multiple diamonds I sew strips together
[259]
flip them back and forth there's two
[262]
darks two lights flip them back and
[264]
forth and create this
[265]
diamon when I work with scraps sometimes
[268]
the size of the scrub specially if it
[270]
came from an exchange it's not very
[272]
accurate and normally I would not want
[275]
to point to mistakes but notice it here
[277]
my points have not matched there's
[280]
something you can do for it when you do
[283]
quilts like that you can send you using
[286]
scraps you can use some diamonds that
[289]
are made from the scraps and cut a fresh
[292]
beautiful diamond and set it in between
[295]
that way you don't have to match any of
[298]
the seams
[299]
if this one is something you are
[301]
enjoying you definitely going to know
[303]
enjoy the next one that I have brought
[306]
for you look at what I did in this one I
[308]
took four strips sewed them together I
[311]
use template this time to cut the
[314]
diamonds out so the diamonds following
[316]
101 eight points are that we just
[319]
unlearn for my background instead of
[321]
just basic squares I made small log
[324]
cabin blocks and set them in as a wise
[327]
seam finish up with small diamonds this
[329]
diamond and this diamond are exact the
[331]
same size and there you have secondary
[334]
design of the scraps playing right with
[337]
slides and dark fabric and some colors
[340]
in the points if you enjoying making
[343]
this kind of stars and just learning the
[346]
basic one we'll start you on it then
[348]
you're going to want to do more and more
[350]
of it and the quilt behind me is the one
[353]
that is from our newest book handful of
[356]
scraps and in this book you have just a
[359]
glory of scrap equals variation of eight
[362]
point star and notice we have single one
[365]
we have double eight point star there is
[368]
three layers of diamonds and they're a
[371]
go all the way with all the scraps
[373]
together and you can make those as well
[376]
every single block that you would do in
[378]
eight point star if you follow those
[380]
basic rules seam allowance towards the
[385]
left got you on that one or maybe are
[390]
adding to your quilting experiences are
[393]
clipping the bunny ear so anything that
[396]
you took from today's class it would be
[398]
great
[398]
it's going to make
[399]
great results for you and I think a good
[402]
thing that she taught us is you know
[404]
start with a small one and then move up
[406]
and she's giving you lots of
[407]
possibilities with lots of different
[409]
ones and if you like it you can do the
[411]
ultimate eight point star which is
[413]
behind us
[413]
or you can do something very simple and
[415]
just kind of get used to it build your
[417]
skills and then just move on and I think
[419]
all of us can do it and we're so
[422]
thankful that you came today to show us
[423]
because I just cannot wait to go home
[425]
and make one of these so thank you so
[427]
much oh you are so welcome it has been
[429]
my pleasure
