welcome to my kitchen i'm clara i'm 93
[2]
years old and today we are making meals
[4]
from the depression
[6]
[Music]
[29]
good morning this morning we're making
[32]
the depression breakfast
[42]
the first thing we're going to make is
[44]
the sugar cookies measure out three
[46]
quarters of a cup of sugar
[53]
put it in the bowl
[56]
then you beat the three eggs
[69]
[Music]
[74]
beat the eggs and then you mix it with
[77]
the sugar
[80]
sugar
[81]
flour and eggs mixing the sugar and the
[85]
eggs
[86]
you beat the eggs and then you take a
[88]
cup and a half of flour put it in here
[97]
and
[98]
mix in the flour and the eggs
[102]
mix it until you don't see any flour
[104]
it's all
[105]
incorporated to make it like you know a
[108]
dough i think it needs more flour
[112]
put in a pinch of salt
[120]
breakfast we had bread bread and butter
[123]
and coffee we used to dip our bread in
[126]
the coffee
[127]
and eat it stuff that was great but on
[130]
sundays we'd have cookies which was a
[132]
big
[133]
treat
[134]
we didn't have cookies until sunday i
[137]
added about another cup and a half of
[139]
flour to make a little dryer and then i
[142]
had to make it thicker
[146]
be generous with the flour on the board
[148]
so they don't stick
[167]
i don't use grease on the pants because
[169]
the dough's got enough grease
[173]
this pan is ready i rolled them and i
[175]
cut them and put them in pans now we're
[177]
going to bake them 350 degrees
[182]
put them under here
[187]
how my mother made coffee and that's we
[189]
had fresh ground coffee
[192]
and we'd hear my mother downstairs
[194]
grinding the coffee
[196]
so it was time to get up
[199]
times were different in those days
[202]
but now when i think of it they were
[204]
interesting
[205]
the bottom layer i put on top and put
[208]
another pen in
[210]
we're gonna make coffee in an old
[213]
depression
[214]
pot real old-fashioned way to make it
[217]
first you have to boil the water put the
[219]
coffee in between there's a little
[221]
container you put the water
[224]
in the next container
[226]
and it drips it goes through the bottom
[228]
of the coffee and it makes your coffee
[235]
sometimes i like to look at old pictures
[238]
and see how we looked my father he was a
[241]
damper old man
[243]
i probably didn't have any teeth
[246]
my mother used to skimp and sleep and
[248]
buy us right clothes and everything well
[251]
look how old it is
[254]
the mirror got black this is a whole
[257]
bunch of us that went to camp together
[260]
that's my cousin and this is their
[262]
their friends that's me we went to lake
[265]
geneva
[266]
for a vacation and this girl came with
[268]
us
[269]
and we used to eat home you know make
[271]
meal and then she'd go in the restaurant
[274]
and eat because she says we never fed
[275]
her enough one day we found her they're
[278]
eating we just got through eating
[281]
i'm sorry but you guys don't eat that
[283]
much and i'm ashamed to be in front of
[284]
you so she used to go over there and eat
[286]
after she ate home
[289]
this is her
[291]
yeah she's nice and chunky my mom used
[293]
to put a lot of milk she didn't want us
[295]
to have a lot of call faces but a drop
[297]
of coffee mostly milk
[300]
but we were happy we're gonna open the
[302]
can of evaporated milk that's what we
[304]
had
[306]
i'm not strong enough
[312]
on sunday we would have wafers cookies
[315]
that was a big treat
[317]
and then we'd count them my brother and
[320]
i
[320]
one for you one for me
[323]
was a one left over we'd split it in
[325]
half it had to be even
[328]
now i'm going to pour some condensed
[330]
milk that we used to have for our coffee
[333]
okay
[334]
we're ready for having our coffee and
[337]
cookies that we just made
[340]
coffee's nice and strong
[342]
[Music]
[343]
we made a depression breakfast this
[346]
sunday because we never had cookies out
[348]
of the weekday just on sunday
[352]

[356]
