Disability Insurance Secrets: What You Need To Know NOW - YouTube
Channel: ZDoggMD

- Matthew Wiggins from Pattern.
[2]
Welcome back to the show.
[3]
We're back,
[3]
because it's residency graduation season
[7]
is coming up
[7]
and disability insurance,
[10]
which we talked about on a previous show,
[12]
is now becoming crucially important
[13]
because the timing of the
purchase is important.
[16]
Fill us in right now, tell us
what the people need to know.
[18]
- So, so residents and
fellows typically get
[20]
about like 10 emails a day
[22]
towards the end of
residency and fellowship.
[23]
And it's easy to ignore.
[25]
It's easy to say, Oh, this
[26]
this is just some kind of
salesmanship or something
[29]
and I'm just gonna ignore everything.
[30]
The problem is this is actually one
[32]
of the most important
foundational financial aspects
[35]
of your life to nail down
before you leave training.
[38]
And the reason is, is because
when you're in training
[39]
these insurance companies want
you to buy a policy early on,
[42]
right? They want you to pay premiums
[43]
over a longer period of time.
[45]
So they actually give residents
[46]
and fellows discounts and
they can be 10, 20, 30% off.
[50]
And not only does that lock in your rate
[52]
at a good bit cheaper rate
for your disability insurance
[54]
but let's say you buy a $5,000 policy when
[56]
you're getting out.
[57]
That means it'll pay you 5,000 a month.
[59]
If you get disabled
[61]
and you want to increase
it at 10,000 a month
[63]
maybe I don't know, five
years down the road.
[65]
If you get the resident
discounts locked in,
[67]
resident fellow discounts locked in.
[69]
It also applies to your
increases in most situations.
[72]
So it not only saves you that money now
[74]
on the maybe smaller policy you get,
[76]
but as you make more income,
[77]
you need to increase your coverage.
[78]
The discount still in
most cases gets applied
[81]
to the increase, even down the road.
[82]
So it's a big money saver.
[83]
Now it's a big money saver later.
[85]
And with as important as
the disability insurances
[87]
and you're protecting your income
[88]
you really want to get it
done at the right time.
[90]
And it really is like one day you're
[92]
in training and you have
these discounted rates.
[93]
And then the next day they
have no, no sympathy on you.
[96]
You know, they give you the full rate.
[98]
- So this is crucial because
the timing is so important
[100]
because I remember they
were pitching it to me
[101]
when I was graduating.
[102]
And I'm like, Oh, I'm joining a group
[104]
and it's not gonna matter.
[105]
And I'll be taken care of,
[106]
wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
[107]
Because my group disability insurance,
[109]
turns out was taxable.
[111]
So instead of getting 60% of my income,
[112]
I was getting 30% of my
income if I got disabled.
[115]
And the other issue is
if I left that group
[117]
that policy doesn't follow me.
[119]
So if you get the policy
yourself, yeah, you got to
[121]
pay the premium, but it's post tax money.
[123]
You get it, when you're, when you get paid
[125]
the disability policy amount,
[127]
that is not taxable.
[128]
It goes with you where you go
[130]
and it's scalable like you said,
[131]
at the potentially at
the same district right
[133]
- It is scalable. And a
lot of times it's scalable
[135]
without having to prove your health again.
[136]
So without any more physicals,
[138]
no more medical record
checks, anything like that.
[140]
So the, the younger and healthier
[141]
and the most discounted rate, you can get
[143]
you want to lock all that in early.
[145]
So that then when you
increase it later is cheaper.
[147]
And a lot of times the ability
to increase it as guaranteed.
[150]
So
[151]
- And the other thing we need
to realize people think, well
[152]
why do I even need disability insurance?
[154]
But the thing is, a lot of
people think, Oh, trauma, trauma
[156]
trauma for disability.
[157]
If I, I got injured.
[158]
I got in a car accident.
[159]
They forget that a lot of this,
[161]
maybe the majority of this is illness.
[163]
So you get sick,
[164]
including mental health issues, etc.,
[166]
disability covers that.
[168]
And this is insurance on your income.
[169]
So it's so important to
actually take it seriously.
[171]
- Yeah. Well, you know,
[172]
different studies show
around three-fourths
[174]
of all disabilities are
illnesses and not accidents.
[177]
So everybody thinks like,
Oh, I'm not dangerous.
[179]
I don't live dangerously.
[181]
Or I don't drive fast
cars or whatever, you know
[182]
but really cancer, mental
illness, arthritis.
[186]
There's so many illnesses
that affect doctors
[188]
that aren't just accidents.
[190]
And like I said,
[191]
75% are from illness and
really can't plan that.
[193]
Or no one is going to happen.
[195]
- Yeah. And again, it's crucial
[196]
because when you're young,
it's when you really need this.
[198]
So people are like, well, why
should I start paying now?
[200]
And, you know, I'm more
likely to get disabled when
[202]
when I'm older or something
have, no, no, no, no, no.
[204]
Because this is when
you have the most loans,
[206]
you have the lowest income.
[208]
You need that insurance policy, because
[210]
if something happens, you are
going to be in big trouble.
[212]
- (Matthew) Right.
[213]
And in our last show, we
went through all the details
[215]
which I'm going to link through here.
[216]
The way people can find you
[219]
is through a link we're sharing. Right?
[221]
- Yeah. Really just click on the link.
[222]
And we try to take this thing
[223]
and make it really simple, fast and easy.
[224]
We know you don't have a ton of time,
[226]
so we try to make it nice and slick.
[227]
And so you click on that
within 24 to 48 hours,
[230]
we're looking at all six of
your own occupation options
[232]
side-by-side and educating you on them
[234]
and really individualize it to you.
[236]
And then, you know,
[237]
if it's something you
want to take advantage of,
[238]
you can get your resin or
fellowship discounts locked in.
[240]
We'd love to help you with that.
[242]
- And this is key,
definitely click through
[244]
because you said something own
occupation, which we talked
[246]
about on the last show,
which is so important,
[247]
own occupation is a rarity
in the disability insurance.
[251]
And it means that if you're disabled
[253]
and unable to do your own specialty
[255]
whether it's neurosurgery or
ophthalmology or psychiatry
[257]
you get paid, and you can go
[260]
and get another job doing something else
[262]
without effecting your benefits.
[263]
But a lot of disability
insurance is not own occupation
[267]
including a lot of group plans. Right?
[268]
- Yeah, that's right.
[269]
So that's why it's so important
to learn these things.
[270]
Definitions actually matter,
[271]
in disability, insurance, life insurance.
[274]
It's like, you know, I mean,
it is what it is, right?
[276]
But disability insurance
is it own occupation.
[279]
There's even things called riders on them
[281]
that help you to get special
cost of living adjustments,
[284]
as you're disabled to help with inflation.
[286]
There's things that will
pay you partial benefits,
[287]
if you're partially disabled.
[288]
So there's so much to be educated on.
[291]
We find a lot of young doctors just throw
[293]
their hands up and say,
[293]
Well, I'll worry about it later
[294]
at some point in time,
but then rates are higher.
[297]
Your health may have changed.
[298]
And so that's why when you're
younger, you're healthier,
[300]
especially if you're in training
[301]
and you have discounts available.
[302]
You really want to learn this stuff now.
[304]
And so our whole business is built around,
[305]
making it simple and easy and educational.
[307]
So you can be, you know,
doctors can be empowered,
[309]
and learn what they need to learn.
[311]
Make a good decision and get
it right to the first time.
[313]
- Awesome. Well, we'll
have people come click
[314]
through the link.
[315]
Thank you again for sharing
your wisdom with us,
[316]
especially when it's so
timely and we are out, peace.
