i can't believe this guy wants to put
[1]
his chat on a charter
[3]
oh shoot
[4]
[Music]
[7]
hey guys what's up it's tom and on
[9]
today's video i'm going to be talking
[10]
about the advantages and disadvantages
[12]
of putting your private jet on charter
[15]
check it out don't forget to stick
[16]
around to the end where i tell you my
[18]
personal opinion on what i would do if i
[20]
owned a private jet so earlier this week
[22]
i got a phone call from a guy that was
[24]
looking to buy a citation and he told me
[26]
that he got a proposal from let's just
[29]
say a large charter company across the
[32]
united states saying hey if you buy this
[34]
jet we can guarantee you cash flow
[38]
and you also have the advantage of
[41]
having a private jet for your own travel
[42]
and of course the tax write-off
[45]
so i was talking so in talking with this
[47]
guy we found out there are a few really
[49]
good pros but also a couple really bad
[51]
cons when it comes to putting your jet
[53]
on a charter number one when it comes to
[56]
the charter company making a proposal to
[58]
you
[59]
usually there's some fine print let's go
[61]
over some of the pros pro number one
[63]
offsetting your maintenance costs or at
[65]
least it seems like it so of course
[67]
running your jet isn't cheap so charter
[70]
companies have access to larger
[72]
maintenance facilities that allow you to
[74]
get a break when it comes to the cost of
[76]
maintaining your aircraft number two
[78]
your aircraft actually gets used these
[81]
aircraft need to fly if it doesn't fly
[84]
then chances are things will break or
[85]
just kind of fall apart these things
[87]
were made to be in the air benefit
[89]
number three depending on the charter
[91]
agreement you might have access to other
[95]
airplanes not just the one that you buy
[97]
so maybe you buy a lighter jet but now
[98]
you get access to the larger jet fleet
[100]
and you can experience different types
[102]
of private travel on the flip side if
[104]
you buy a bigger jet but you have a
[106]
business meeting that only requires a
[108]
lighter jet you can actually save some
[109]
money by taking a smaller jet that's in
[112]
the fleet so for all these reasons and
[114]
more it actually might be a good idea to
[115]
put your plane on a charter certificate
[118]
the most important thing is to read the
[120]
fine print all right let's talk about
[122]
the cons well number one hidden fees
[125]
when it comes to an estimate or a
[127]
proposal that a charter company is going
[128]
to make for you to put your aircraft on
[131]
charter
[132]
there's usually some hidden fees and
[133]
it's not necessarily a nefarious
[136]
practice but rather things come up i
[138]
mean who knows what's going to happen
[140]
and you're going to be on the hook to
[141]
maintain your aircraft so you may see a
[144]
positive roi on the spreadsheet but if
[147]
you have a large maintenance
[149]
bill for one reason or another then that
[151]
ri can quickly diminish
[153]
number two up front acquisition costs
[156]
you see you're fronting the money to
[158]
purchase a 2 3 million dollar asset
[161]
and in that case you're finding the
[163]
money if the market turns you could
[165]
still be paying
[166]
the price for the the higher market as
[169]
the market kind of goes down and your
[171]
roi again is going to be diminishing
[174]
number three trust you're handing over
[177]
two three million dollar asset to people
[179]
that
[179]
hopefully you trust but not only the
[181]
people that are maintaining it but what
[183]
about their customers i mean you've got
[185]
cairns you've got babies you've got pets
[189]
all these people that you don't know all
[191]
these strangers are gonna be flying in
[192]
your aircraft how does that make you
[195]
feel number four is gonna be
[196]
depreciation
[198]
see as the plane is flown if it's flown
[200]
a lot so that you get more money don't
[203]
forget you get more money the more the
[205]
plane flies well that's putting hours on
[208]
the engine it's putting hours on the
[209]
airframe it's putting more butts in the
[211]
seats they're going to produce wear and
[214]
tear and diminish the overall value when
[216]
you go to resell so again read the fine
[219]
print see how depreciation is going to
[222]
play into it versus the roi that you're
[224]
getting by renting it out there's a lot
[227]
more cons when it comes to
[230]
charter but there's so many different
[231]
charter operations and different ways to
[233]
do charter that i love to kind of talk
[236]
to you individually and see what you're
[237]
considering to help you out and let's
[239]
not forget what plane are you going to
[242]
be renting out see a charter company
[244]
might want you to buy a bigger body jet
[246]
but your missions are mostly local and
[249]
you just got to get from point a to
[250]
point b so how do you choose the right
[252]
jet not just what the charter company
[253]
wants you to buy
[255]
all right so what would i do if it was
[257]
my family so i think about it this way
[259]
if this is going to be your first jet i
[261]
would start out smaller see with the
[263]
large body jets not only are you
[265]
depending upon larger missions but
[268]
you're also dependent on customers that
[270]
don't mind higher gas prices like they
[272]
are right now because it's going to cost
[274]
more to run those aircraft so you need a
[276]
customer base that not only wants to get
[278]
from point a to point b but wants to get
[280]
to point a to point b in style in a
[282]
larger cabin in a larger feel so you
[286]
have to check on the customer base to
[288]
see if it's going to be flying and don't
[290]
be the owner that buys the charter
[292]
companies their first big body jet or
[294]
their first light jet because they don't
[296]
have the data to support whether or not
[298]
they're going to be able to
[300]
sustain those missions so i would get
[302]
started with a light chat i would take a
[304]
look at a light jet that gets people
[306]
from point a to point b because i
[307]
believe that's going to be your primary
[309]
the largest the largest niche in the
[312]
market is people who want to get from
[313]
point a to point b
[315]
you know the bar the larger body jets
[317]
are great if point a and point b are
[319]
across the country but if it's mostly
[321]
local flights the lighter jets can be
[323]
more fuel efficient they're going to be
[324]
easier to maintain they're also going to
[326]
be at a lower acquisition cost and you
[328]
can still get a really good one on
[330]
programs that's red chart already at a
[332]
competitor price point so start there if
[335]
you and the charter company decide wow
[336]
this is making a ton of money well great
[338]
then you can either keep it there and
[340]
cash flow it and then upgrade if your
[342]
mission changes or you know best
[345]
scenario is that you buy another one and
[347]
you use it and you cash flow the other
[349]
one and everyone's happy all around
[351]
worst case scenario the light jet
[353]
doesn't have the revenue you're looking
[354]
for and you go to resell it i believe
[356]
the light jets are going to have a
[358]
stronger time in the market especially
[360]
right now in second quarter of 2022 as
[362]
fuel prices continue to rise um the
[364]
demand for lighter jets is gonna
[366]
maintain while the demand for the larger
[368]
jets may uh start to decrease
[370]
all right so there's a lot that goes
[372]
into considering putting your plane on
[374]
charter or not
