Channel: unknown

[1]
a company wants my social security
[4]
number to contract for them do i provide
[6]
it first off i'm not your attorney i am
[9]
not your cpa i'm just providing
[12]
uh generally available information that
[14]
you can google anywhere i just happen to
[16]
have years of experience kind of in this
[17]
business and so i have learned all this
[20]
stuff and i'm passing it along to you
[21]
secondly if you get value out of this
[23]
video please like and subscribe
[25]
um
[26]
it really helps us out thirdly go to
[29]
betterlegal.com and buy an llc from us
[31]
or if you have a friend
[32]
uh get an llc or share an llc with them
[36]
if you are a customer of ours or if you
[37]
go to our referrals page um for slash
[40]
referrals you can actually become an
[42]
affiliate and if you share your
[45]
affiliate link with someone else they
[46]
get a hundred dollars off and you get a
[48]
hundred dollars
[49]
uh check back from us and everybody wins
[52]
so we don't have to pay google hundreds
[54]
of thousands of dollars a month to for
[56]
ads and
[58]
you get that money instead so win win
[61]
win win
[62]
now back to the question a company wants
[65]
my social security number to contract
[67]
for them do i provide it you can
[70]
uh very common
[71]
it's called a w-9
[73]
uh so what they
[75]
want you to fill out is this document
[78]
from the irs and why do they need that
[82]
document from you well
[85]
every company so the company that is
[87]
going to hire you as a contractor
[90]
is
[90]
um
[93]
they need if they pay you more than 600
[96]
in a
[97]
fiscal year
[98]
they need to
[100]
report
[101]
that they need to report to the irs that
[104]
they paid you money
[105]
so if they pay you 300 for a quick fix
[108]
of something they don't need to report
[110]
it but if they pay you 600 or more
[112]
throughout the year then they need to
[114]
file that w-9 with the irs and say hey
[117]
we paid this person 600
[121]
fyi and so that's going to be linked to
[123]
your social security number so then
[125]
if you
[127]
don't report that 600 that you earned
[129]
from that company the irs is going to
[131]
know about it and so that's how they get
[134]
you
[134]
um
[135]
so don't be
[137]
uh kind of trying to skirt under the
[138]
system because the irs will figure it
[140]
out because if you don't tell them
[141]
likely someone else did so fyi on that
[146]
um so yeah that's the main reason you'd
[147]
have to file a w or that's the main
[150]
reason you have to provide a social
[151]
security number but there is an
[152]
alternative and that is our friend here
[154]
the ein the employer identification
[156]
number the
[158]
worst named item in the history of all
[161]
government
[162]
items
[164]
employer identification number well
[169]
if
[170]
hal here wants to work for abc tile for
[173]
john at abc tile and
[176]
john is like hey i need your w9 so fill
[179]
this out and
[181]
hal is like well i don't want to put my
[182]
social security number on here
[184]
you know
[185]
um
[187]
he can put his ein
[189]
but when when hal goes to the irs and to
[192]
file an ein he's like okay it's called
[194]
an employer identification number
[196]
that that's not what i need like i'm not
[199]
an employer well maybe it's call that
[202]
because the employer needs that
[203]
identification number for you
[206]
ultimately it's a tax id for the
[208]
business and if you yourself are going
[211]
to be a sole proprietor
[213]
then
[214]
you yourself can get an ein
[217]
now uh it's generally not recommended to
[220]
just be a sole proprietor unless you've
[222]
got your own
[223]
reasons if you're going to be doing you
[225]
know a lot of business
[229]
it's generally best to get an llc
[233]
uh
[233]
probably 95 of all businesses that are
[235]
created nowadays at least through us are
[237]
llc's and so you get an llc and then you
[240]
get an ein attached to that llc and then
[243]
you zip that through to uh to john
[247]
so instead of being a sole proprietor
[251]
and uh
[252]
and sending in w9 with your social on it
[256]
you instead this is kind of what it
[258]
looks like you instead
[263]
uh get an ein for your llc
[267]
or get an ein for your sole
[268]
proprietorship
[270]
and then you get that w9
[273]
with the ein number which also looks
[276]
like a tax number it usually is two
[278]
numbers and then a bunch of things so
[279]
it's kind of like this it's like
[281]
20-123456
[285]
this is generally what an ein looks like
[288]
um so yeah that's uh that's the answer
[290]
to that question you can provide the
[292]
social security number
[293]
um on that but generally if you're an
[296]
llc or sole proprietors doing a lot of
[298]
business you don't want to be sharing
[300]
your social security number everywhere
[301]
that's just fact so
[303]
again if you've got uh
[305]
helpful
[307]
if this video was helpful um please like
[310]
subscribe uh go to our referrals page so
[313]
you can uh go to betterlegal.com
[315]
forward slash referrals
[318]
and you can sign up to be
[320]
an affiliate and you can tell other
[322]
people to use us if you don't need us
[325]
right now but you like me because i'm
[327]
giving you the good information so again
[329]
