Markup vs. Margin: What鈥檚 the Difference? Explained using Excel - YouTube
Channel: Chris Menard
[0]
Hello. I'm Chris Menard. Welcome聽
to a Microsoft Excel video.聽聽
[4]
This video is going to discuss the difference聽
between the Markup versus Margin. So this is聽聽
[10]
great if you are an accounting student or just聽
general business, you want to know how this works.
[20]
So over in column A and B,聽
I've already got this set up.聽聽
[23]
Some item costs eight bucks . I'm going to do聽
the math in my head. I want to mark it up 25%.聽聽
[30]
25% of $8 is $2. So therefore, the聽
retail or selling price is 10 bucks.聽聽
[37]
There's my cost at 8. So the Excel formula聽
is the $10 minus the $8 right there.
[47]
Markup and margin, one item they do have in聽
common, they're always involving three items聽聽
[54]
and those never change, the selling price or聽
retail price, the cost is the second item, and聽聽
[59]
the third item is your profit. Where they differ聽
is when you're dealing with the percentages.
[66]
So I'm going to do the margin first.聽聽
[70]
The margin is your profit divided聽
by the selling price. So the 20%,聽聽
[78]
but your markup is still the profit. So that聽
hasn't changed, but you divide by cost. So margin聽聽
[88]
is dividing by the selling price. Markup is聽
dividing by the cost and there you go right there.
[95]
If you were looking, the margin percentage of聽
sometimes called the gross margin percentage,聽聽
[102]
I've seen it also as gross profit percentage.聽
Either term is correct. If you were doing vertical聽聽
[108]
analysis on an income statement, and I聽
have a video, it is up in the top right聽聽
[113]
corner of my Vertical Analysis, you would be聽
using the margin percentage, not the markup.
[120]
Now, part two of this video, I'm going to show you聽聽
[123]
that the margin percentage is always going聽
to be less than the markup percentage,聽聽
[128]
but that is okay, it's just how it works. If you聽
notice I've already got 20 and 25% in column B.
[135]
So in this example, we've got a $10 price for an聽
item, and then here are the different costs right聽聽
[142]
here. So $10 minus 8, we've already done this聽
one. So this next one, $10 minus seven is $3. $3聽聽
[153]
divided by the selling price of $10, is that聽
30%, by the way, I just typed it in here.聽聽
[160]
But I want to show you how the margin percentage聽聽
[164]
and the markup percentage differ, but it doesn't聽
matter what the selling price is. So here we go.
[171]
This is going to be G2聽
times the margin percentage,聽聽
[178]
because that's going to give us the $2聽
profit, divided by G2 minus 1, minus E3.
[195]
How does that sound? Sounds horrible, cause聽
it's wrong. Let me do it real quick. G2聽聽
[204]
times now it sounds right. So there's聽
your formula up in the formula bar,聽聽
[210]
right above column A and B right there.聽
I do need to fix this formula, I need to聽聽
[215]
make G2 an absolute cell reference.聽
I'm pressing the F4 function key.
[221]
Everything else can stay relative, meaning your聽
E's can be relative. So here we go, cross hairs.聽聽
[228]
So at a 30% margin, our markup is 42.8%.聽
And at a 50% margin, our markup is 100%.
[237]
Let's talk about that last one聽
real quick. If something costs $40聽聽
[243]
and you mark it up 100%, you're doubling聽
the price. So that $40 is now an $80,聽聽
[251]
but, that's your markup, 100%, but your margin聽
is the 80 minus 40 to give you the $40 profit.聽聽
[259]
The $40 profit divided by the retail price of $80聽
is 50%. What's cool about this, I'm over in G2,聽聽
[269]
it does not matter what this retail price聽
is. Those percentages will be the same.
[281]
Anyway, I hope that helps. If聽
you need help understanding the聽聽
[284]
difference between the Margin versus the Markup.
