Apple vs Right to Repair: Part 2! - YouTube

[Applause]
[3]
so today apple announced their
[5]
self-service repair program and a pretty
[8]
major flip on their stance on right to
[10]
repair and yes there is still a bit of a
[13]
catch but my first reaction one seeing
[15]
this was
[17]
well i ain't never ever seen you act
[19]
like this before it does seem kind of
[21]
crazy we're seeing them like add ports
[23]
back to the macbook pro going back on
[25]
that stuff and now flipping a stance on
[26]
the right to repair but my second
[29]
reaction was
[31]
why so i made a video a little while
[32]
back this year all about right to repair
[35]
that i highly suggest watching talks
[37]
about the concept a bunch of companies
[39]
with various stances around the issue
[41]
and why it's important the concept of
[43]
being able to repair the thing that you
[46]
bought should be very simple but in 2021
[49]
it's not now apple isn't the only
[51]
company guilty of various bad practices
[54]
like this but
[56]
they are one of the most influential
[58]
consumer facing companies
[60]
ever right so any step they make in
[63]
favor of right to repair
[66]
is a pretty major deal so here's the
[67]
announcement they've made and i'll link
[69]
it below apple announced the
[71]
self-service repair program which allows
[73]
customers who are comfortable with
[75]
completing their own repairs access to
[77]
apple's genuine parts and tools this is
[80]
starting with the iphone 12 and 13
[82]
lineups starting early next year and
[85]
soon we'll add m1 max after that and the
[88]
initial phase of this program will focus
[90]
on the most commonly serviced modules
[91]
such as iphone's display
[93]
battery and camera so basically
[96]
independent certified repair shops have
[98]
had access to some tools and parts for
[100]
some very basic repairs to stuff like
[103]
the iphone and now individuals
[106]
like you and me will be added to the
[108]
list of people who can get access to
[110]
those tools and parts
[112]
that's the pretty big deal so let's say
[114]
you drop your iphone or something on the
[115]
ground the screen cracks okay you've
[117]
already always had the option to go to
[119]
the apple store and have them do it for
[121]
that price or you could take it to an
[123]
independent repair shop and pay for them
[125]
to do it but now you have the extra
[128]
option if you're a confident and
[129]
competent enough person
[131]
to get that manual get those individual
[133]
parts straight from apple and do the
[136]
repair yourself and then you can
[137]
actually send back the old or broken
[139]
parts to apple so they can recycle them
[141]
and then you'll get a credit back on
[143]
your account for some of that value
[146]
that's not bad so i on the surface
[149]
i think this is great i think it's huge
[151]
the the potential e-waste being removed
[154]
the potential repairs that have been
[156]
unlocked the real choice that's being
[158]
offered to us
[159]
and the potential ripples this sends
[161]
throughout the industry are all great
[164]
but
[166]
it's definitely it's definitely still a
[168]
first step and here's why i say that so
[170]
number one it's still the pretty simple
[172]
fairly short list so this goes back to
[174]
the point i made in the original right
[176]
to repair video which is that devices
[178]
like these phones and laptops are more
[180]
complex than ever and are built way more
[183]
tightly integrated than ever which makes
[185]
them much more difficult to repair so
[187]
even if an individual like you or me now
[189]
has the instructions and the parts
[192]
officially from apple uh some of the
[195]
deeper repairs like parts of the
[197]
motherboard like i could do a battery or
[199]
a screen no problem but you know some of
[201]
the memory might be going wrong and you
[203]
want to replace some of that it's all
[204]
still soldered together and it's
[206]
integrated so much that you'd probably
[207]
have to replace the whole thing so that
[210]
hasn't really changed now i will say i
[212]
have seen some tear downs of the new 14
[214]
and 16 inch macbook pros and the battery
[217]
looks noticeably more repair friendly
[219]
there's pull tabs under some of the
[220]
cells now only a few screws to get
[222]
inside the bottom so this does appear to
[225]
be premeditated at least a little bit
[227]
but i still don't see people like you
[229]
and i taking parts of the motherboard
[231]
off but then number two this is also
[233]
something that a lot of independent
[234]
repair shops and people like lewis
[236]
rossman have already aired their
[238]
grievances about which is that the list
[240]
of those repairs that are being
[241]
supported by apple is still so short
[245]
it's like battery screen cameras
[248]
that's it and if it's anything outside
[250]
of that there still will not be official
[252]
apple documentation or ports parts made
[255]
available
[256]
that also has not changed now the fact
[258]
is
[259]
most iphone repairs will be under those
[262]
like three most common ones i mean
[264]
screens and batteries got to be number
[265]
one and number two apparently that's
[267]
over 200 parts and tools already being
[270]
made available just for those big three
[272]
macs being added to the list will add a
[274]
lot more and those are probably the only
[275]
types of repairs i would personally at
[278]
this moment be trying to do myself but
[280]
for repairs beyond that
[282]
ports
[283]
buttons
[284]
speakers and mics and things like that i
[286]
would like independent repair shops to
[289]
be able to fix those things with
[290]
official apple parts and documentation
[292]
as well apple says the program will be
[295]
expanding later next year but as of
[297]
right now
[298]
that has also not changed so why did
[300]
apple do this i mean they've been
[301]
they've been notoriously against pretty
[303]
much any right to repair stance for
[306]
forever and this is so unlike them
[309]
well number one i think a lot of the
[311]
impending legislation
[313]
caused by the right to repair movement
[315]
has put pressure on them like there's
[317]
you know ftc
[319]
regulation coming down there's also
[320]
things in europe in law that have sort
[322]
of pressured apple and they're sort of
[324]
getting out ahead of it even a
[325]
presidential order has gone through in
[328]
the u.s i think it needs a lot more work
[330]
to be stronger but apple's seeing all
[332]
this stuff and is getting out ahead of
[334]
it a little bit but also number two
[337]
this is fantastic pr like this is a this
[340]
is a great headline especially for apple
[343]
now again a lot of the stuff still
[346]
unchanged we have a lot of questions we
[348]
don't know prices yet how much these
[351]
parts are going to cost for individuals
[353]
we don't know the qualifications if
[354]
everyone's going to be able to get these
[355]
parts or not and there's still a bunch
[357]
more details of the program that have
[359]
yet to be unveiled when it does start
[361]
next year
[362]
but
[363]
it's a great first step i will
[364]
absolutely give them that it's a great
[366]
first step and since it's a great first
[368]
step for apple one of the biggest
[370]
companies out there
[371]
it's a great first step for the industry
[374]
as a whole
[375]
so i like it but yeah this is great i
[376]
almost want to like take a broken iphone
[379]
and just repair it just for the hell of
[381]
it uh but i'm curious what you guys
[382]
think i don't know it feels like a new
[384]
look apple whether it's just them
[387]
getting out in front of legislation and
[389]
potential problems in the future or
[390]
maybe a little bit of them is also
[392]
listening to what people are saying
[394]
i don't know either way it got us here
[396]
so it's a good day for the beginning of
[399]
the movement either way that's been it
[401]
thanks for watching catch you guys in
[403]
the next one
[404]
peace
