Welcome back,聽聽
[0]
everybody. Guess who's back. Bruce Porter聽
joins us now with this week's Dollars and聽聽
[4]
ense from the Resource Center. Of聽
course. Thank you for coming in.
[7]
Hey, glad to be here.
[8]
Good to have you.聽聽
[9]
As always. Now, we want to dive into our topic聽
here in just a second. First of all, though,聽聽
[14]
you're calling it Planning Made Simple聽
workshop. Tell me about the workshop.
[17]
Yeah, it's our estate聽聽
[18]
planning series we're still doing. We聽
have a lot of demand for it. So we have聽聽
[23]
one tonight at six. And I think it's full.聽
And tomorrow was full. But we do have the聽聽
[29]
same workshops coming up in February. We聽
have those scheduled several months out.
[34]
So if you're interested, bring聽
your family. You want to sit down聽聽
[38]
and get some basics about estate planning. This is聽
our tagline for the year - Planning Made Simple.聽聽
[45]
We try to make it simple, where it's聽
easy to understand. And then you can聽聽
[49]
take that information and you can聽
make decisions on how to move forward.
[52]
Yeah. And I think taking the first step is聽聽
[56]
sometimes the hardest part to do. And it's really聽
not that hard. You just got to start somewhere.
[59]
It really is. We try to聽聽
[61]
take all the anxiety away and give聽
you a direction. And it does help.
[65]
Set us on the right path. Today, we're聽聽
[67]
going to talk about CD rates. Now with interest聽
rates the way they are right now, sometimes聽聽
[72]
people are saying - "people still do CDs?"聽
But yes, of course they do. Tell me about it.
[76]
Well, they do. I mean, you know, the聽聽
[77]
fed funds rate is used and that's the internal,聽
we won't dive into a lot of detail on that. But聽聽
[84]
the feds fund rate dictates prevailing interest聽
on a lot of different things - credit card rates,聽聽
[90]
car loan rates, mortgage rates, things聽
like that. And then effectively,聽聽
[95]
it dictates funds available to the public for聽
savings and long term savings, things like that.
[103]
You know, when the rates are low, what does it聽
do? It boosts the economic impact. When rates聽聽
[109]
are high, it puts the brakes on. So right now the聽
feds have said the fed funds rate is going to stay聽聽
[117]
pretty much the same for the next three years, all聽
the way through 2023. So, we can expect interest聽聽
[125]
rates to stay low to continue to boost the economy聽
for the next, what, two years now? Two more years.
[132]
So now how does that affect you as a consumer?聽
Well, if you're setting, let's just talk basics.聽聽
[138]
If we've got some money in the bank in savings,聽
and maybe we're retired, maybe we're not,聽聽
[144]
this is going to apply to everybody. I tried聽
to get as close as I could on what the best聽聽
[151]
bank rates were. So if you look at a .75% bank聽
rate, and that's a pretty good rate right now.聽聽
[158]
Like, for a two year term with $1,000 minimum,聽
that's $750 per year per $100,000. So if聽聽
[168]
you've got 10,000, that would be $75. If聽
you've got $1000, it'd be $7.50 per year.
[176]
So not a huge return, but it's very safe.
[178]
It's very safe. And聽聽
[180]
that's why people have their money in a聽
bank savings type plan. It's because FDIC,聽聽
[186]
and it's safe, and it's secure and things聽
like that. Well, a bank calls that product,聽聽
[191]
a certificate of deposit. An insurance company聽
calls the same similar product, a fixed annuity.
[200]
So when you look at a fixed annuity compared聽
to a fixed bank CD, here's an example.聽聽
[206]
Current rate of 2.4%. There's several聽
companies that have this. A three year term,聽聽
[214]
so a little bit longer term. But again, if your聽
objective is interest earnings on that money,聽聽
[219]
you can pull it out or you can leave it in. It's聽
higher, per $1000. It's higher per $100,000.聽聽
[229]
You look at $2400 per year per $100,000 versus聽
$750 per 100. Yeah, so that'd be $240 per year per聽聽
[242]
10,000 or $24 per year per per $1000.聽
And so it's three times what the rate is.
[250]
Which I think聽聽
[251]
begs the question here, what on earth is the聽
difference that would make me say, "well,聽聽
[254]
why would I do this when I could do that?" But聽
there are so many other things to figure out.
[257]
They're both guaranteed.聽聽
[259]
They're both safe and secure. CDs are聽
taxable, whether you use the interest聽聽
[265]
or leave it in there. Annuities are deferred.聽
So there's some differences. But the main thing聽聽
[271]
is - are they safe? Are they secure? Bank聽
accounts are secure. What's the objective聽聽
[277]
of cash? That emergency reserve. If you've聽
got too much cash, you're sacrificing rate,聽聽
[285]
then part of your cash might be more suited in a聽
longer term, like 2.4% fixed annuity might be an聽聽
[293]
option for long term accounts. But you still聽
need to maintain cash reserves in the bank.
[299]
Okay, yes, you do. Get some聽聽
[301]
expert advice. You've got your book, of course.聽
Talk real quick about where people find your book.

[315]
He does. It's a very,聽聽
