[1]
You know, um... you know, guys, we-we've gotten to know
[2]
Donald Trump so well over the past year.
[4]
I mean, well, at this point, he's practically a member
[7]
of the family, um, specifically the uncle
[9]
who hits on your wife at funerals.
[11]
Um, but there is so much about Trump that remains unexamined,
[14]
and that's why tonight we're introducing a new segment
[16]
where we spotlight an obscure moment from, uh, Trump's past.
[20]
-(clicking) -I could do this all day.
[22]
I doubt I'll ever be involved in politics beyond what I do...
[25]
And I really believe in-in trashing your enemies.
[28]
I mean, I'd look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers.
[30]
I'd say, "Rosie, you're fired."
[33]
Ah. Pure gems.
[36]
Today's, uh, lost Trump nugget,
[39]
a 1999 interview with The New York Times
[41]
in which Trump shares his thoughts on poor people.
[44]
Uh, but before we get to that, let's just acknowledge
[46]
that Donald Trump has spent a lot of time boasting
[48]
about his tremendous wealth. In fact,
[51]
according to this pie chart we made up,
[53]
Trump has devoted a full 58% of his campaign
[56]
to telling us how rich he is.
[59]
And yet Trump has also managed to attract the support
[62]
of many low-income voters, as Trump himses...
[64]
uh, himself will attest.
[66]
Actually, the people I resonate best with are poor people
[70]
and people that are really blue-collar.
[72]
My base and the people that like me best, frankly,
[75]
are poor people and working people,
[77]
working-class people, and I'm very proud of that.
[80]
Yeah, yeah. And, you know what, it makes sense.
[82]
Opposites attract.
[84]
It's the same reason why Bert and Ernie can't stop (bleep).
[87]
You know? It's a...
[89]
it's a thing.
[91]
But it's true.
[92]
Poor people love Trump.
[94]
In fact, among the poorest
[96]
50 counties in the United States
[98]
that have voted thus far, Trump has won 45 of them.
[102]
And one of the things they love most about Trump is his honesty.
[106]
Trump dominating among voters looking for a political outsider
[109]
who tells it like it is.
[110]
He doesn't care what people think.
[112]
Donald Trump speaks the truth.
[114]
He's not politically correct,
[115]
and he says what is on his mind.
[117]
Yep, he says what is on his mind.
[120]
And that's what people are looking for.
[122]
Finally, a president with the guts
[124]
to tell Mexicans that they are rapists.
[126]
Take that, Abraham Lincoln, you coward!
[129]
In other words, poor people love Trump
[132]
because he says what he really thinks.
[134]
So what does Donald Trump really think
[135]
about the poor people who make up his base?
[137]
Well, let's look up, uh, that old interview
[140]
with The New York Times. And I... and I-I quote,
[143]
"I've watched politicians bragging about how poor
[145]
"they are, how they came from nothing,
[147]
"how poor their parents and grandparents were.
[149]
And I said to myself..." That was him thinking
[151]
what he says to himself. "'If they can stay so poor
[154]
"'for so many generations, maybe this isn't the kind of person
[156]
"'we want to be electing to higher office.
[158]
How smart can they be?'"
[160]
And then... It's a rhetorical question, but he-he elaborates.
[163]
"They're morons."
[166]
Incredible.
[168]
Donald Trump told the newspaper that he thinks poor people,
[170]
the people voting for him now in droves, are morons.
[174]
Yeah, it's like something a cartoonishly evil
[176]
comic book villain would say, "Poor people are morons.
[179]
"Now get out of this soup kitchen so I can bulldoze it
[181]
to build a water park for my pet tiger!"
[186]
And-and just in case Trump's disdain for the poor
[189]
wasn't entirely clear, he goes... he goes on to say,
[192]
"Do you want someone who gets to be president
[196]
"and that's literally the highest paying job
[198]
he's ever had?" Yeah.
[201]
So, in other words, Trump wants America to be a plutocracy.
[204]
You know? So Trump thinks, basically,
[207]
that a normal-income person can't be president.
[210]
Like, if you don't earn rich money,
[213]
you'll just be (bleep) all over the White House or something,
[215]
running around. Secret Service going, "Mr. President,
[218]
what are you doing?" "I don't know any better.
[220]
"I'm middle-class!
[222]
My kids are in public school!"
[226]
Now, normally, slamming the intelligence
[228]
of your own fan base would destroy a candidate,
[230]
but, obviously, we know that's not going to happen to Trump.
[232]
We just... we just wanted to bring it to your attention
[234]
because, uh, once Trump is president,
[236]
this segment will become illegal.
[238]
So, uh, there you have it. We'll be right back.
