hey jimothy yeah boss what's up why are
[2]
we spending so much money on cataract
[4]
surgery uh
[5]
it's a really common surgery well
[8]
can we not do that
[10]
can we not cover cataract surgery yeah
[13]
no
[15]
people need to be able to see
[17]
well
[18]
can we do that thing where we get to
[20]
practice medicine without a medical
[21]
license
[23]
prior authorizations yeah yeah what if
[25]
we require prior authorizations for
[27]
every cataract surgery if you think what
[30]
he's describing in that video is a bad
[32]
idea
[34]
you're right it is what he's describing
[36]
is prior authorizations and that's when
[39]
health insurance companies require you
[42]
the patient to seek their approval
[44]
before receiving medical care that you
[46]
need then the health insurance not your
[49]
doctor will decide whether or not you
[51]
can get that treatment and if they'll
[52]
cover it this is a really bad idea and
[55]
it's another example of why our
[57]
healthcare system in this country is so
[58]
broken
[60]
do you have any idea how many cataract
[62]
surgeries there are every year
[64]
i don't know like a hundred four million
[67]
this would be a huge burden on patients
[68]
and doctors oh come on doctors won't
[71]
care you're forcing eye doctors to ask a
[74]
room full of business majors for
[76]
permission to do eye surgery
[78]
i think they'll care when you inject
[80]
capitalist interests into the medical
[82]
industry you're going to get outcomes
[84]
like this because then they have a
[85]
financial incentive to reject your claim
[88]
the less money they spend covering
[89]
treatment for you the more money they
[92]
can make so it seems like a really bad
[94]
idea and that's why the united states is
[97]
the only developed country in the world
[99]
without a universal health care system
[100]
but let's talk about prior
[102]
authorizations a bit more to make things
[104]
even more complicated there isn't a
[105]
uniform standard across health insurance
[107]
companies or plans for what procedures
[110]
or treatments or medicines require prior
[113]
authorization so that leaves some people
[115]
in the dark or flying blind when making
[117]
difficult medical decisions sometimes
[119]
the doctors themselves the ones that
[121]
take these insurance plans don't even
[123]
know what is and is not required to have
[126]
prior authorization and that's led to
[128]
people getting care and then later
[130]
getting hit with a giant bill from their
[132]
health insurance company which decided
[134]
to reject the authorization and there's
[136]
a wide range of treatments and medicines
[138]
that fall under this domain it could
[140]
range from surgeries like this video
[142]
talks about to
[143]
x-rays to medicines to
[146]
cancer treatment we have to do this
[149]
why
[152]
look i don't want to alarm you
[155]
but i went through our finances
[158]
we only made eight billion in profit
[160]
last year
[163]
okay for instance take the case of
[166]
gilbert agary he's a firefighter in
[168]
arizona who was diagnosed with chronic
[170]
myeloid leukemia seven
[173]
years ago his doctor said he got it on
[175]
the job as a firefighter and the entire
[178]
time he's been dealing with leukemia his
[181]
insurance company copperpoint which he
[183]
gets through the city of goodyear
[185]
arizona
[187]
has been denying his claims they've been
[189]
denying him treatment for his leukemia
[192]
he's tried to appeal he's tried to fight
[194]
back he's tried to explain
[196]
and every single time they keep
[198]
rejecting his claim his most recent
[200]
denial was a couple weeks ago and he's
[202]
at the point now where he could retire
[204]
but he can't
[206]
because he needs to keep working so he
[208]
can pay for the medicine that prevents
[210]
the leukemia from coming back
[212]
and that medicine is fifteen thousand
[214]
dollars a month so in his words he has
[217]
to keep working until his body gives out
[220]
so i was thinking if we can just delay
[222]
all the cataract surgeries for a few
[223]
months we can hold on to all the patient
[226]
premiums and make more money and he's
[228]
far from a unique circumstance in early
[231]
2020 a michigan cancer patient forrest
[235]
van patten
[236]
was told by his doctors to get cell tea
[239]
treatment and gilbert's case is hardly
[242]
unique in early 2020 a michigan cancer
[245]
patient forest van patten was told by
[247]
his doctors that he needed car t
[249]
treatment to deal with his cancer they
[251]
said this would kill the cancerous cells
[254]
in his bloodstream and save his life but
[256]
when van patten sought authorization
[258]
from his health insurance company
[260]
priority health they rejected the claim
[262]
they said it wasn't a covered benefit so
[265]
his family did what hundreds of
[266]
thousands of americans do every single
[269]
year
[270]
and they started a gofundme to try to
[271]
pay for his medical care they reached
[273]
out to their local news they wanted to
[275]
get attention on the story and they
[277]
hoped this would help bring about change
[279]
a story ran on february 13th 2020
[282]
talking about his fight against his
[284]
insurance company forest van patent died
[286]
four days later and what makes this even
[288]
more enraging is other health insurance
[291]
companies in michigan cover that
[293]
treatment and because health insurance
[295]
companies can pick and choose what they
[297]
want to cover and what they don't
[299]
that leaves people like him in this
[301]
situation often people have to try to
[304]
fundraise on the internet to cover their
[305]
medical expenses or they die
[308]
can we just
[310]
for one day
[312]
not be evil jimothy you knew what you
[315]
signed up for when you started working
[317]
here not evil it's literally our mission
[320]
statement see
[323]
these are just two examples and there
[325]
are many many more this is not how our
[328]
system should operate but it does
[331]
because health insurance is a greedy
[333]
parasitic middleman it tries to siphon
[336]
as much money as it can away from you
[339]
and into the pockets of their executives
[341]
and their shareholders and meanwhile
[343]
health insurance ceos are getting
[344]
massive salaries and the companies are
[347]
seeing record profits
[348]
and that comes at your expense until we
[351]
change our system
[353]
and implement medicare for all we're
[355]
only going to see more unnecessary
[357]
preventable deaths
