- This house cost $3,500. (cash register clangs)
[3]
This one, $6,100. (cash register clangs)
[5]
And this one, $2,000. (cash register clangs)
[8]
But why are they so cheap?
[9]
- It needs full roof, it needs kitchen, bathroom,
[12]
plumbing, electrical, foundation
[14]
and mold remediation.
[15]
- Oh. That's why.
[17]
In this episode of Catalysts, we'll meet Acts Housing,
[20]
an innovative, non-profit helping low income families
[23]
achieve their dreams of home ownership.
[25]
- We believe that home ownership is possible
[27]
for anyone that's willing to work for it.
[29]
- Building on their success of helping thousands
[31]
become homeowners in Milwaukee, they're trying to see
[33]
if their model will work in other cities. (crowd cheering)
[36]
And that $6,100 home,
[38]
it was just purchased by Christina Patterson,
[40]
and she's their first homeowner in Beloit, Wisconsin.
[43]
- From homelessness to home ownership,
[45]
that's my story.
[47]
(eerie music)
[49]
(birds chirping)
[52]
- Today Christina gets to share her vision of the home
[55]
with the entire Acts Housing team.
[57]
- And most of the team, you haven't met most of us.
[60]
They don't know much about your story,
[61]
so if you want to just share for a minute if you're willing,
[65]
we'd love that.
[66]
- Anybody got a tissue? (people laughing)
[67]
I promise I won't cry this time.
[70]
So in 2011 I had brain surgery and wasn't able to work,
[75]
so as a result, my family and I became homeless. (cries)
[80]
(sad music)
[81]
We were homeless.
[82]
We didn't have anywhere to go. (sniffles)
[86]
And look at me. (cries)
[88]
This is my house. (people cheering)
[92]
(soft music)
[97]
- When I couldn't even put a roof over my kids' heads,
[101]
that was probably the lowest part of my life,
[104]
cause I think as a parent, everybody wants that,
[107]
a home for their kids to grow up in. (sniffles)
[111]
(soft music)
[112]
- Who are the photos?
[113]
- This is my grandma and grandpa,
[117]
and these are my mother.
[119]
- Oh wow.
[120]
- My grandma would have been very proud to see this.
[124]
- Christina is inspiring,
[126]
and we're privileged that we get to work with her.
[128]
We have a really strong conviction at Acts.
[132]
Families are capable of just tremendous things.
[135]
If we can just tap into it and give them an opportunity,
[137]
they can be successful.
[138]
(soft music)
[139]
The housing system is broken,
[141]
even more so for the families we're working with.
[143]
Most solutions, they're top down solutions,
[145]
they don't deal with people.
[147]
They think, if we just build enough
[149]
that's gonna fix things.
[150]
But they don't necessarily solve the problem
[152]
because that doesn't help families provide for themselves.
[155]
And what we're doing at Acts
[156]
is we're starting from the bottom up.
[158]
We start with a family.
[159]
- Finally we're gonna be with you
[161]
through the entire process.
[162]
- Their model is unique because they're able
[164]
to come alongside families and provide every single service
[167]
they would need to become successful homeowners.
[169]
- We're a one stop shop for home ownership.
[171]
We can help a family prepare for home ownership
[173]
through our home buyer counseling,
[175]
purchase a home,
[176]
and then if the home requires rehab,
[178]
we'll coach a family through the rehab,
[179]
providing rehab counseling services,
[182]
and also finance some of those transactions
[184]
providing our home loan funds.
[186]
- What's the total scope?
[187]
Like how much are you investing?
[188]
- There's my total.
[189]
- $44,726.
[193]
It's a big investment.
[194]
- Yep.
[196]
Buying a home is scary.
[197]
It is a big decision,
[199]
and to have someone show you how that works,
[202]
I don't know how to explain that,
[204]
other than amazing.
[206]
(upbeat music)
[208]
- After experiencing homelessness,
[209]
Christina's credit was in bad shape.
[212]
That was one of the biggest barriers
[213]
Acts needed to help her overcome.
[215]
- Maria, she went through my credit report
[217]
and explained to me the things that
[220]
I needed to do to fix it.
[222]
- Once Christina had elevated her credit,
[223]
it was time to move on to the next phase, house hunting.
[228]
Acts helps families choose the homes
[229]
that are right for their situation.
[231]
- Sometimes that's a move-in ready home
[232]
that's available on the market,
[234]
other times that's a foreclosed home.
[236]
- Families invest their own money and take out loans
[238]
for the home purchase and rehab.
[240]
Christina purchased a foreclosed home
[242]
that needed a lot of work before
[244]
she and her family could safely move in.
[246]
- While there's a lot of work
[247]
that goes into rehabbing a distressed home,
[249]
families are saving upwards of $3600 a year.
[253]
Those savings are huge in terms of making sure
[255]
there's better food in the fridge,
[256]
but also so that they have a little bit
[258]
of an emergency fund, so when life deals them challenges,
[260]
they're able to overcome it.
[262]
When they take on this distressed home,
[264]
oftentimes it's been attracting crime, attracting nuisance,
[266]
and all of a sudden, our family comes in,
[268]
and they're investing in it, and they care about it.
[270]
That sort of care, it's contagious.
[272]
And so it can be a real game changer in these neighborhoods.
[275]
- So when Acts was founded 24 years ago,
[278]
it was a dream that some day, not only would we
[280]
help families in Milwaukee,
[281]
but we could share it with another community.
[283]
Having that be a reality,
[285]
it makes this a really special day.
[286]
So with that (cuts ribbon)
[288]
(crowd cheering)
[291]
And better than that,
[292]
we have a tradition at Acts,
[294]
which is that, when a homeowner completes the long process
[298]
of preparing themself for home ownership, purchasing a home,
[300]
we have a ceremony where we actually
[302]
have them ring the doorbell. (doorbell rings)
[304]
(crowd laughs and cheers)
[308]
(inspiring music)
[309]
- We absolutely think our model
[311]
is one that can be successful
[313]
in literally hundreds of cities throughout the country.
[316]
When we prove that that works,
[317]
I think it changes the narrative
[318]
about what's possible in our country's cities,
[321]
These families,
[322]
Though they didn't seek out home ownership
[324]
because it was gonna improve their self-esteem
[326]
or it was gonna give them more confidence,
[328]
I think that's very frequently the result.
[331]
They're standing a little bit taller.
[332]
(inspiring music)
[334]
- I don't like to be told what I can and cannot do.
[337]
You know what I mean?
[337]
So I set out to prove that I can do this.
[340]
I absolutely feel like I can do a lot of things
[343]
I didn't know I could do.
[345]
I don't know how to do that, but I'm gonna learn today.
[348]
This is a goal that I've had for years,
[351]
and I finally did it.
[353]
My kids are happy.
[354]
My life is just complete now.
[357]
This is me.
[358]
This is my house.
[359]
This is my counter.
[361]
This is my door.
[363]
It's my house.
[364]
(inspiring music)
[367]
- Thanks for watching.
[368]
Acts Housing's innovative model is empowering families

through home ownership.
