Namaskar, my name is Mukul and you are welcome to the Asset Yogi
[15]
Where we unlock the knowledge of finance
[18]
In this video, I am going to discuss a very important business-related topic
[23]
Which is the working capital operating cycle
[25]
We will do a small series of 4 or 5 videos
[29]
on working capital
[29]
We will discuss the working capital management in that
[33]
Because it is very important for every business
[35]
If you are doing your business or you want to do business in future
[39]
Or if you invest or want to invest in the share market
[44]
Then it is a very important topic for understanding
[46]
Many people ask me to make a video on share market investing
[50]
Share market investing is not a topic that can be covered by only one video
[55]
For this, you should have an understanding of finance
[59]
So working capital is such topic
[61]
which can help you to
[63]
analyze any business properly.
[65]
Or you can implement that in your business
[68]
In fact, many companies shut down because
[72]
their working capital management is not that good
[74]
Assume if you cannot manage finance for your day-to-day
[79]
Then your creditors and banks will be on your doorstep
[84]
And you face issue with your liquidity
[87]
And you aren't able to manage your working capital
[90]
Then nobody can stop you from being liquidated
[93]
Liquidate means nobody can stop
[95]
you from being bankrupt
[96]
So that's why I say that you should
[98]
understand the concept of working capital properly
[100]
How will you manage the working capital?
[102]
We will know in this video.
[105]
So let's understand working capital
[107]
operating cycle in this video.
[109]
Let's go towards the blackboard
[111]
So to understand the working capital operating cycle
[113]
We have to understand the whole cycle of a business
[116]
To which we call cash to cash cycle
[118]
Now, if we take an example of manufacturing business
[121]
Then the first requirement in that is the raw material
[124]
To purchase the raw material, you'll need the cash
[128]
Once you get raw material, then you start the manufacturing
[133]
So that raw material goes to work in progress
[137]
Then your production process gets completed and the goods are converted into
[141]
finished goods. After the finished goods, you make their sales
[146]
Whoever your wholesalers or retailers are
[150]
You send the goods to them
[153]
But these retailers or wholesalers, do not give you the money immediately
[158]
They purchase goods from you on credit.
[160]
So that's why I have written them as debtors
[162]
They can be your end customers.
[165]
Whether they are retailers or wholesalers in case of the manufacturing
[169]
This process can be different in different types of process
[173]
We are talking about the manufacturing business only
[175]
So the debtors also have a credit period
[178]
After that, whenever they will give you your money
[181]
Then they give bills receivable, which is also called a bill of exchange
[185]
So the bill of exchange also has a period, we will not get the money immediately
[192]
Then you get cash
[193]
The whole cycle from cash to getting converted into cash
[198]
Either we call it cash-to-cash cycle
[201]
Or we can also call it an operating cycle
[204]
Or we can also call it the working capital operating cycle
[208]
Now we will see, how much time it will take to complete
[210]
all these processes. For example, assume
[215]
you will take 30 days to purchase the raw materials
[218]
So we will take 30 days here
[220]
And you will store the raw material
[223]
The total time of purchasing and storing the raw materials is 30 days
[229]
After that, you will manufacture it
[231]
Let's say it will take 10 days on average in the manufacturing process
[235]
After this, when they become finished goods
[238]
So the finished goods do not get sold immediately
[240]
So maybe they also have some storage time
[243]
Your goods may be stored in the warehouse. So it can be 20 days
[247]
Once your sales are done, then your debtors,
[251]
wholesalers and retailers will not give you the money immediately
[255]
They will either give you bills receivable or bills of exchange
[258]
They will also demand the credit period
[260]
So maybe their credit period can be 30 days
[263]
So your cash to cash cycle
[266]
How much is it in total? We will calculate it
[270]
30 days for your raw material
[272]
Plus manufacturing process of 10 days
[275]
Plus 20 days for storage of finished goods
[278]
So I will write 20 days here.
[280]
Plus credit period of 30 days which you've given to the wholesalers or retailers
[285]
So we will take 30 days here
[287]
Now when you will add these, you will get 90 days of the working capital cycle
[293]
So your money will be back after 3 months
[297]
Now the expenses during these 3 months
[301]
You have to manage that by yourself
[303]
These 3 months are your working capital period
[307]
Your expenses are called working capital
[311]
Now what are expenses there in the working capital
[316]
For example, first, you have to arrange the
[318]
cost for the raw materials
[321]
So the expense for the raw materials initially
[323]
You do it from your pocket or any other way you want to finance it
[328]
That is an expense plus
[329]
You will have some salaries for your staff
[332]
Other than this there will be your rent
[336]
What can be other expenses?
[337]
Maybe you have some loan payments
[340]
Assume you have set up a factory, maybe you have taken some loan for that
[344]
So your regular loan payments are there
[346]
Plus you could have some marketing expenses
[349]
When you sell your finished goods then maybe you have some marketing expense
[353]
So you have to add them
[355]
All these expenses and a period of 3 months
[359]
You have to arrange the working capital for this
[363]
How will you manage its expenses?
[367]
I will make a separate video on how the financing of working capital is done
[372]
But you should understand the concept that what is working capital
[377]
