What is carding?

Carding is a form of credit card fraud in which a stolen credit card is used to charge

prepaid cards or purchase gift cards.

Carding typically involves the holder of the stolen card or card information purchasing

store-branded gift cards, which can then be sold to others or used to purchase other goods

that can be sold for cash.

Credit card thieves who are involved in this type of fraud are called “carders.”

How Carding Works Carding typically starts with a hacker gaining

access to a store’s or website’s credit card processing system, with the hacker obtaining

a list of credit or debit cards that were recently used to make a purchase.

Hackers might exploit weaknesses in the security software and technology intended to protect

credit card accounts.

They might also procure credit card information by using scanners to copy the coding from

the magnetic strips.

Today, various methodologies include skimmers at ATMs, hacking or web skimming an ecommerce

or payment processing site or even intercepting card data within a point of sale network.

Randomly calling hotel room phones asking guests to "confirm" credit card details is

example of a social engineering attack vector.

Other account types like PayPal, Uber,Netflix and loyalty card points may be sold alongside

card details.

Logins to many sites may also be sold as a backdoor access apparently for major institutions

such as banks, universities and even industrial control systems.

Cashing out in gift cards is very common as well, as "discounted gift cards" can be found

for sale anywhere, making it an easy sale for a carder, and a very lucrative operation.

The Google hacks popularly known as Google dorks for credit card detailsare also used

vastly in getting credit card details

How you can avoid carding Use anti-spyware and malware-blocker software.

Fraudsters who want to steal your credit card number through malware have to trick you into

downloading infected software first.

For instance, they may offer free game downloads that contain spyware, viruses, and other unwanted

programs.

Using anti-spyware and malware-blocker programs help keep your devices safe by identifying

infected software programs and removing them.

Promptly run software updates.

Software updates generally improve the performance and security of your device.

You can either set automatic security updates on your devices or accept your operating system's

software updates as they come up.

It's also a good idea to download software only from well-known, trusted sources.

Know the signs of a phishing attempt.

When you get a message from an unknown source, don't click on links, download attachments,

or respond to those messages.

If it's a scammer, they're trying to get you to download malware or get you to share personal

information, such as your credit card details.

by phone
