[0]
hey everyone brayden here coming to you
[1]
with a breaking disney news update as
[4]
disney has just released their q1 fiscal
[7]
year 2022 earnings results providing us
[10]
a first look into the financial
[11]
performance of the parks since the
[13]
introduction of the flat fee genie plus
[16]
as well as the pay-per-ride lightning
[18]
lane services here at walt disney world
[20]
as well as out in disneyland today's
[23]
earnings also coincide with a fan and
[25]
media push against the current not so
[28]
popular ceo bob chapeck levying
[30]
criticisms over price hikes and a
[32]
cheapening of the theme park experience
[34]
these are some wild times in the world
[36]
of the walt disney company so let's get
[38]
into it here and see what exactly is
[40]
going on firstly this afternoon disney
[42]
released their first quarter results for
[44]
2022 where the expectations were
[47]
extremely high on the part of
[49]
speculative traders going into it here
[51]
disney stock which has been down
[53]
significantly since november was up a
[55]
good bit today and additionally
[57]
short-term options calls on the stock
[59]
were insane premiums were up as high as
[61]
154
[63]
today that being people betting the
[65]
stock would go up following earnings so
[67]
safe to say there was a lot of hype
[68]
going into these earnings and as it
[70]
turned out the hype was absolutely
[72]
warranted disney beat subscriber
[74]
expectations for disney plus it was
[76]
expected they come in around 8 million
[79]
added subscribers it turned out disney
[81]
gained close to 12 million new
[83]
subscribers this past quarter which of
[85]
course is very bullish disney's basing
[87]
their entire future around disney plus
[89]
and it does seem that there is a good
[91]
amount of interest last quarter things
[93]
were looking a little shaky now here we
[94]
are seeing a lot more people buy disney
[97]
plus which is definitely some good news
[99]
there at the same time over at the parks
[101]
which are just a juggernaut they
[102]
generate amounts of cash that don't even
[103]
make any sense the parks just had their
[105]
best quarter ever in both revenue and
[108]
segment income the parks revenue this
[110]
past quarter just a quarter just three
[112]
months time was 7.2 billion dollars with
[116]
2.6 billion of that being income which
[119]
is just simply insane that is one single
[122]
quarter and then looking at direct to
[123]
consumer with disney plus hulu espn plus
[126]
all that combined the revenues were 4.7
[128]
billion and income was negative in that
[130]
segment where they lost 600 million
[132]
dollars for the quarter as disney
[134]
continues to invest huge sums of money
[136]
into building out content on those
[138]
services i put these numbers like this
[140]
on purpose just to show you how
[141]
important the parks are i wish we'd see
[143]
a lot more of that reinvested in the
[144]
parks because looking at the kind of
[146]
money the parks are making right now
[147]
domestically disney could definitely
[149]
save up a lot of that build a fifth park
[151]
at walt disney world to compete with
[152]
universal who's also working on a new
[154]
park in orlando things like that but
[156]
disney's priorities it seems like it is
[158]
all about disney plus right now so
[159]
beyond the earnings results what i want
[161]
to talk about in this video is what on
[162]
earth is going on with disney what's the
[164]
plan what's bob chap up to here because
[167]
right now the media is reporting on how
[169]
shareholders want to vote him off the
[171]
board of directors now you might look at
[173]
these media reports and you might think
[175]
wow shareholders are going to vote out
[177]
cpec that's like what happened with
[178]
eisner back in the day no it's not when
[181]
the new york post says shareholders they
[183]
don't mean that a ton of people are
[184]
going to show up to a meeting vote
[186]
amount that's not even how it works what
[188]
they mean is there are discontented
[190]
parks fans posting stuff on reddit about
[192]
how they're upset about what disney's
[193]
doing and of course i am a parks fan and
[195]
i totally understand where these guys
[197]
are coming from but the thing is
[198]
redditors in that post they're combined
[200]
let's say hundreds of shares they do not
[202]
influence disney blackrock vanguard
[205]
state street morgan stanley they have
[207]
close to half a billion in shares
[208]
combined they are what influenced disney
[211]
they own disney and i don't mean not to
[213]
say resistance is futile or anything
[214]
like that you guys know i'm not a fan of
[216]
what disney's doing what i mean to say
[218]
is a loud vocal minority of us express
[221]
discontentment with the directions
[222]
things are going with the parks for
[224]
years we've been prophesizing how all
[225]
these short-term decisions being made by
[227]
ceo bob chapeck will culminate in things
[229]
ripping apart at the seams and you know
[231]
what we could end up being right it's
[232]
completely possible but today my faith
[235]
in that was a little shaken because
[236]
disney rolled out this ridiculously
[238]
trying i've equated it to high rate
[240]
robbery this lightning lane paper riding
[242]
it's absolutely outrageous you guys want
[244]
to know we discovered today getting a
[246]
first look at the performance figures
[248]
with the genie service during the
[250]
earnings call get this chapeck disclosed
[253]
that during the holiday period more than
[255]
50
[256]
of guests in the parks purchased genie
[259]
plus lightning lane or both
[262]
more than 50
[264]
and you might be saying oh does he just
[266]
mean christmas this sounds very
[268]
misleading no no they elaborated
[270]
averaging out for the entire quarter the
[272]
slow days the in-between days all of
[274]
that even with those factored in it
[276]
still turns out that more than a third
[278]
of guests on any given day purchased at
[280]
least one of these services
[282]
on top of admission on top of food and
[284]
merchandise which is also ballooning in
[286]
price it is just absolutely outrageous
[288]
and i told you guys previously i heard
[290]
genie was not hitting disney's internal
[292]
projections chapek contradicted that
[294]
directly today he said that they were
[295]
blown away by the response to genie does
[298]
that mean that it actually met their
[299]
expectations i'm still a little suspect
[301]
on that because disney's been tweaking
[302]
the offerings with lightning lane ever
[304]
since it started it's very clear that
[306]
some rides disney thought guests would
[308]
be willing to pay per ride in order to
[310]
skip the line out that ended up not
[311]
being the case but still the fact that
[313]
most guests don't care that this is just
[315]
on its face a terrible new precedent it
[317]
incentivizes disney to make the lines
[319]
that you pay for you pay a hundred
[320]
dollars to get in there make the standby
[322]
lines go slow you're paying for it on
[324]
top of 100 plus admission you're paying
[326]
individually for a faster line it rides
[329]
which often times isn't actually even
[330]
that fast and used to be free this used
[333]
to be the fastpass line not so long ago
[336]
it really just shows that you have this
[337]
schism where you have these parks fans
[339]
that really care about the history of
[340]
this place sort of the ethics what it's
[342]
supposed to be about how things are
[344]
supposed to work and then you have the
[345]
everyday guest that goes in his
[347]
unthinking doesn't care enables jpec
[350]
whatever they want to do and that really
[351]
is just the way that it is and you know
[353]
a lot of people online today have been
[355]
telling me brayden don't be too hard on
[356]
the guests it's extortion lots of people
[359]
are going to end up paying up and i know
[360]
that i prophesied this way back when
[362]
this thing started that people aren't
[364]
going to have a crappy vacation after
[366]
they've already spent so much money to
[367]
get there you know pay for the ticket
[369]
the hotel all that they're going to
[371]
spend this extra little chunk here to
[373]
have what they feel is a good experience
[375]
it totally is the fallacy of sunk costs
[377]
that disney is profiting off of here and
[379]
we are seeing it so as much as a lot of
[380]
parks fans might want to see chapek exit
[382]
i think honestly anyone you put in the
[384]
ceo position is going to continue this
[386]
kind of stuff it's here now it's the way
[388]
the company is and the numbers that
[390]
they're seeing especially with this
[391]
genie service in particular the guest
[393]
adoption reinforces the fact that things
[395]
like this are likely here to stay and
[396]
we're probably going to see more things
[397]
like this in the future it's just going
[399]
to get worse and on another note a
[401]
little bit of a different note this
[402]
quarter it's very fishy we're talking
[405]
about how great this quarter was it's
[407]
totally goofy how disney arrived at
[409]
these amazing results we know disney
[411]
made 2021 a nothing year at the parks
[414]
and likely on purpose they slow played
[416]
everything they loaded the start of the
[418]
new fiscal year which started october
[420]
1st with the new rides the new shows a
[423]
lot of that stuff could have been ready
[424]
earlier but they said oh we're doing it
[426]
for the 50th anniversary we know disney
[428]
doesn't care about the 50th anniversary
[429]
they really didn't do a whole lot for it
[431]
they obviously placed these few new
[433]
attendance draws on that day and around
[435]
that time frame because it's the new
[437]
fiscal year that's when we saw all that
[439]
merchandise come out that the ebayers
[440]
were getting after and that's also when
[442]
we started to see attendance loosen up
[443]
that's when we saw bigger crowds the
[445]
latter part of this last year there were
[446]
not many limitations on the reservation
[448]
system it was very easy to get a
[450]
reservation despite the fact that the
[451]
crowds in the parks were quite
[453]
substantial they also added this new
[455]
revenue stream with genie oh what
[456]
interesting timing for them to introduce
[458]
this just in time for fiscal year 2022.
[461]
i think they timed everything to make
[462]
2021 look bad so that 2022 could look
[465]
absolutely insane that is my personal
[467]
belief the silver lining here is the
[469]
cpec affected that strategy taking a
[472]
look at the stock after hours here it's
[474]
absolutely worked now he has to top this
[477]
genie right now is this new untapped
[479]
revenue stream disney gets to brag about
[482]
for four quarters where they're
[483]
comparing it to last year's quarters
[484]
that didn't have this genie revenue
[486]
stream then come 2023 when jpeg ceo
[490]
contract is up by the way this new
[492]
income stream will now be the
[494]
expectation so they'll somehow have to
[496]
find a way to top it so that means
[497]
they're gonna have to raise prices
[498]
they're gonna have to increase the share
[500]
of guests that are paying for these
[501]
services and while i wanna say good luck
[503]
this is where it's all gonna fall apart
[505]
you know maybe it will but honestly
[506]
that's not how it's gone so far that 50
[509]
number with the genie adoption over the
[511]
holidays is just crazy and i think it's
[513]
indicative of the fact that disney's put
[515]
their foot down on the accelerator and
[516]
they've not reached the point yet where
[518]
they need to start pulling it off disney
[519]
will know when guests are really
[521]
starting to get fed up with stuff and
[522]
right now really just seems to be the
[523]
hardcore parks fans and everyone else is
[525]
absolutely happy swiping those credit
[527]
cards doing whatever they don't care
[529]
they will compromise they will go along
[531]
with a lesser experience at the parks
[534]
which is kind of sad and i do think we
[535]
are going to continue to see things go
[537]
in this direction and it almost becomes
[539]
a self-fulfilling feedback loop right
[542]
where what's going to happen is what
[543]
you're going to see moving forward is
[544]
attendance at the parks international
[546]
guests are going to come back you're
[547]
going to see more and more attendance
[549]
the attendance is going to increase
[550]
throughout this year and even if disney
[552]
doesn't interfere with the standby lines
[553]
you're going to see the standby weights
[555]
go up more guests are going to end up
[557]
paying for the genie so perhaps in 2023
[560]
that seemingly impossible mandate of
[562]
chapex somehow topping this year that'll
[564]
actually be completely possible because
[565]
you're gonna have more guests in the
[567]
parks so you're gonna have a larger
[568]
quantity of people who are going to be
[569]
willing to pay for genie lightning lane
[572]
things like this anything that might
[573]
feasibly speed up the lines and since
[575]
disney will see increased demand they're
[577]
going to be able to raise prices on
[578]
everything they're already doing that
[580]
with food and merchandise we know it's
[581]
inevitable they're going to do that with
[582]
tickets they're going to do that again
[584]
with annual passes i'm sure and i think
[586]
we'll also start to see that happen with
[588]
genie with lightning lane as attendance
[590]
kicks up and disney sees more and more
[592]
demand for these skip the line features
[594]
and then think about this the profits
[595]
from that where are they going disney
[597]
plus where disney makes more and more
[599]
content jpeg keeps mentioning how
[601]
they're influencing the zeitgeist in the
[604]
world they want to have a new title out
[605]
on disney plus every week and then
[607]
disney is going to tie in all those new
[609]
properties they're going to put that
[610]
stuff in the parks more people are going
[612]
to go to the parks attendance is going
[613]
to keep going and going and going so
[615]
even as you have some discontented fans
[617]
like us disney's going to find more and
[618]
more people they're going to find new
[620]
suckers who are going to be perfectly
[622]
willing very excited to go to the parks
[623]
and they are going to slowly discover
[625]
all the things we already have and it's
[627]
just going to be this thing where it
[628]
just keeps going and going and going and
[630]
every year they're gonna be able to say
[631]
hey we've made more money than last year
[633]
so maybe this master plan this thing
[635]
that disney's been betting on maybe it's
[637]
gonna pan out for them we'll just have
[638]
to see it's kind of scary to think about
[640]
it's kind of sad it's the way the world
[641]
at a certain point you just gotta say
[643]
you know what disney's going to do what
[644]
they're going to do and the days of walt
[646]
all that stuff we are far past that we
[648]
are far past the days where you know
[650]
walt went and founded wed enterprises
[652]
you know disney proper the company only
[654]
came in at the last second to fund the
[656]
construction of the park all that
[658]
research all that development work that
[659]
was walt and it was his brother who
[662]
eventually got walt disney productions
[664]
to put money into this project something
[665]
like that i don't think would happen
[667]
today so as much as chapek talks about
[668]
how disney's so focused on innovation
[671]
and things like this i don't know if
[672]
we'll ever see something truly
[674]
innovative come out of a machine like
[676]
this chap refer to the company as a
[678]
synergy machine during the call i mean
[680]
this thing is literally the death star
[682]
the walt disney company is the death
[684]
star so this idea people have that
[685]
you're going to see some new innovative
[687]
incredible thing that we never have
[689]
thought of before it's going to come out
[690]
of this company i just don't think
[692]
that's how that works and it's so funny
[693]
how bob chapeck and these types they
[695]
sort of act like stuff like disney plus
[697]
is so innovative and it's like you guys
[698]
bought the company bam tech who already
[701]
had that technology
[702]
netflix has existed this over-the-top uh
[704]
direct-to-consumer content the streaming
[706]
method it has existed for many many
[708]
years the streaming model you guys are
[710]
getting into it late in the game now
[711]
everybody's getting into it so i guess
[713]
all these companies are so innovative
[715]
coming up with this idea for doing
[717]
streaming services it's all sort of
[718]
ridiculous and now they're talking about
[720]
the metaverse and things like this what
[722]
all this will materialize in we don't
[724]
know yet but really the message i want
[725]
to get across is it's about greed you
[727]
know the sort of altruistic stuff uh
[729]
that walt and a lot of his friends from
[731]
the studios did when it came to the
[732]
parks that sort of created that culture
[734]
around the parks that we really
[735]
appreciate it's been on its way out for
[737]
a long time and i think the fact that
[739]
you have a ceo like cpec now who has
[741]
just totally done away with the public
[743]
relations fan service aspect of the
[745]
company and is really showing you what
[746]
the company is actually about how they
[748]
actually think it's actually kind of
[749]
refreshing i really appreciate the fact
[751]
that jpec is so candid it's really
[754]
opening people's eyes to how the company
[756]
actually is because for so long i would
[757]
talk about some of these things and
[758]
people just wouldn't believe me because
[760]
bob iger the previous ceo he was so so
[762]
good at appealing to the fans saying the
[765]
things that they wanted to hear even if
[766]
behind the scenes it was really all
[768]
going down exactly like this a lot of
[770]
the same discussions a lot of the same
[771]
thought processes i think was just much
[773]
better masked in the era of eiger where
[775]
now cpec is just so frank about how it's
[777]
just about optimizing the business model
[780]
bleeding money out of the consumers just
[781]
taking as much as they can it is highway
[783]
robbery that is absolutely the right
[785]
expression and that is what is going on
[787]
with the walt disney company so quite a
[788]
stellar quarter for disney my
[790]
congratulations to the leadership to ceo
[792]
bob chapeck to cfo christine mccarthy it
[795]
looks like it's all come together here
[796]
quite nicely and i think chances are
[798]
good that will continue to see this
[799]
trend going into the future i am quite
[801]
bullish on the short and medium term of
[803]
the walt disney company even if it's
[805]
something personally from the consumer
[807]
aspect i am just not as much of a fan of
[809]
as we see a lot of the tradition a lot
[811]
of the core elements of the parks be
[813]
eroded here in the pursuit of the dollar
[816]
bill let me know what you guys think
[817]
about everything we talked about here
[818]
the state of the walt disney company my
[820]
analysis everything going on here it is
[822]
quite a crazy time as i said at the top
[824]
for the walt disney company be sure to
[826]
subscribe if you haven't already and
[827]
i'll keep you up to date on everything
[829]
going on here i hope you all are doing
[830]
well live from the mickey mouse magic
[832]
studio this is braden thank you so much
[833]
for watching have a magical day
[838]
[Music]
[854]
