STOLEN Social Security Number? | This is What REALLY Happens - YouTube
Channel: Holy Schmidt!
[0]
in this video i discuss what really does
[2]
and doesn't happen
[3]
when your social security number is
[5]
stolen coming up next
[7]
on holy schmidt holy schmidt
[13]
there's a great deal of panic when the
[15]
subject of a stolen social security
[17]
number comes up
[18]
in fact the mind goes to pretty dark
[20]
places for some people
[22]
will someone work pretending to be me
[25]
will the taxman come after me for back
[27]
taxes on income
[28]
that i never earned will the police come
[30]
knocking at my door
[31]
accusing me of crimes i didn't commit
[34]
well my credit get ruined by someone who
[36]
takes out a credit card
[37]
charges it up and never pays it back
[40]
will i be destitute in retirement
[42]
with someone who is receiving my social
[44]
security payment
[45]
pretending to be me making friends under
[47]
my name
[48]
this video will separate fact from
[50]
fiction so that you know exactly what
[52]
happens
[53]
when someone gets a hold of your social
[55]
security number
[56]
let me begin this video by making one
[57]
very bold statement
[59]
that most people don't know but will set
[61]
the stage for everything
[63]
that comes next and that is your social
[66]
security number was
[68]
never intended to be identification
[71]
if that was the case your social
[72]
security number would actually have your
[74]
picture on it
[75]
and would be renewed every four to eight
[77]
years like your driver's license
[79]
it is this very reason that dealing with
[81]
a stolen social security number is
[83]
problematic
[84]
if someone steals your credit card the
[85]
chargers are removed and you get a new
[87]
card
[88]
with a new number within a few days if
[90]
someone steals your social security
[92]
number getting a new social security
[94]
number
[94]
is right up there with getting a
[95]
presidential pardon maybe not quite that
[97]
extreme
[98]
but it is extremely difficult so what
[101]
can someone do with your social security
[103]
number
[104]
as it turns out not much without other
[106]
information have you ever applied for a
[108]
loan for example
[109]
and filled out two boxes what's your
[111]
name and what's your social security
[113]
number
[114]
no of course not so job number one
[117]
is keeping your social security card
[119]
separate
[120]
from your other identification i
[123]
wouldn't carry it around in your wallet
[125]
for example but in reality when someone
[127]
gives up their social security number
[129]
they're usually giving up the other
[131]
information as well
[132]
phone scams internet phishing scams and
[135]
meticulous
[136]
stocking occasionally are how the
[140]
thief gets a hold of your information
[142]
including your social security number
[144]
by the way regarding third point someone
[146]
stalking you watching you
[148]
it's much less likely and much more time
[150]
consuming
[151]
for someone to do that it's unlikely in
[154]
fact that they'll commit to days and
[156]
days of
[157]
observation just to get a hold of your
[160]
information
[161]
this isn't the cloak and dagger world of
[162]
espionage
[164]
it's more likely they'll get your
[165]
information by calling you and
[166]
pretending to be someone else
[168]
the angry irs agent is a classic example
[172]
if you haven't gotten one of those phone
[173]
calls yet you probably will
[175]
by the way when that happens simply get
[177]
their name and telephone number
[179]
and tell them that you'll call them back
[180]
if they ask if there's a better time
[183]
say no and just get their name and
[184]
information
[186]
if it really is the irs they'll give you
[189]
their name and contact information
[191]
but my bet is nine times out of 10 maybe
[193]
even 99 times out of 100
[195]
the person on the other end will just
[197]
hang up and you won't hear from them
[199]
again
[199]
however if someone does get a hold of
[202]
your information
[203]
here's what they can do with your social
[206]
security card
[207]
when you pair with other things like
[208]
your name your birthday etc
[210]
the first thing is get a credit card
[212]
under your name even though social
[214]
security cards are not considered
[215]
identification
[217]
interestingly almost every credit card
[220]
application
[221]
asks for your social security number a
[224]
thief can use your number
[225]
and other information apply for a credit
[227]
card charge up the balance
[229]
and then walk away leaving you with the
[232]
problem
[233]
30 60 90 days later along those lines a
[236]
question that's often asked is can
[238]
someone access my bank
[239]
information using just my social
[241]
security card it would be very very
[243]
difficult
[244]
banks require multiple forms of
[246]
information when you walk into your bank
[248]
for example
[249]
they require not only your atm card
[253]
but a password and photo identification
[256]
the same is true with online banking by
[258]
the way online banking usually requires
[260]
a username
[261]
a password and most of the time there's
[263]
two-step identification
[265]
which means that you will get a five
[267]
digit code by text or by email
[269]
and you have to enter that code to
[271]
proceed and if you call up someone on
[273]
the other end
[274]
the customer service representative will
[276]
ask you a series of questions
[277]
your mother's maiden name your place of
[279]
birth the name of your first dog
[281]
etc there's a lot of work that goes into
[284]
keeping you protected so i would feel
[287]
very comfortable
[288]
that someone can't access your bank
[290]
information with just your social
[292]
security
[293]
card number the next one this is a big
[296]
one
[297]
ripe for fraud is getting medical care
[299]
under your name using your social
[301]
security number
[302]
this is problematic for three reasons
[304]
the first is that hospitals generally
[307]
don't refuse service so that if i walk
[309]
into an emergency room
[311]
and i have any form of identification
[313]
they're going to take it and they're
[314]
going to get me into
[316]
service the problem that i'm there for
[318]
the second is that when you do give them
[320]
the information
[321]
they don't do a background check they
[322]
don't run a credit check usually
[324]
because minutes count when you're in the
[326]
hospital
[327]
and the third and final point is that
[329]
when you walk into a hospital chances
[330]
are good
[331]
you'll never be going back again that
[333]
also means that they don't know you
[336]
as you walk in the next point is filing
[339]
a fraudulent tax return
[340]
someone gets a hold of your social
[342]
security number your
[344]
name and your birth date and they can
[347]
file a fraudulent on the tax return they
[348]
file ahead of you
[350]
so by the time you file your tax return
[352]
you'll probably get a statement that
[354]
says
[354]
duplicate return filed either in the
[357]
mail if you're doing it
[358]
the old-fashioned way or electronically
[360]
if you're doing it using one of the
[362]
services
[363]
that people use to file tax returns the
[366]
next point is the criminals use your
[367]
identification
[369]
your social security number when they
[371]
get caught
[372]
the criminal record could prevent you
[374]
from getting jobs could prevent you from
[376]
getting credit
[377]
and you might even have someone knocking
[378]
at your door when
[380]
the criminal doesn't show up for their
[381]
court date the fourth point is that
[383]
sometimes they just steal your benefits
[385]
they file for unemployment under your
[387]
name for example and that could go on
[388]
for six months maybe even longer
[390]
or they file for social security
[392]
benefits while you're still working
[394]
and in either case you won't find out
[396]
about it potentially for
[398]
months or even years and when you do
[400]
you're going to have to spend a lot of
[401]
time undoing what they've done
[402]
so that you get the benefits that you
[404]
deserve one of the best things that you
[406]
can do
[407]
at least on an annual basis anyway is
[409]
check your credit report
[411]
a lot of these irregularities will show
[413]
up on your credit report
[415]
either through a credit line that you
[417]
know you didn't open
[418]
or an address that you never lived at if
[420]
you see any of that on your credit
[422]
report
[423]
take steps immediately to manage your
[427]
identity theft through an identity theft
[429]
service and also notify all of the
[432]
credit agencies
[433]
that that information is not about you
