GDPR and Google Analytics - What do you need to change? - YouTube
Channel: MeasureSchool
[0]
in this video we're gonna take a look at
[1]
what you need to change inside of your
[3]
Google Analytics installation to become
[6]
compliant with gdpr all the more coming
[10]
up hey then welcome back to another
[18]
video of measure school of comm teaching
[19]
you the data-driven way of digital
[21]
marketing my name is Julian and today we
[24]
want to talk about GPR again now in our
[27]
last videos we already talked about what
[29]
gdpr actually is and how I prepared for
[31]
GDP on how you could to now today we
[34]
want to talk about a specific tool in
[36]
this case Google Analytics so how can
[38]
you prepare your Google Analytics
[39]
account to be compliant with gdpr and
[43]
privacy laws in Europe now Google
[45]
Analytics is obviously a tracking tool
[47]
and it's gathering data from data
[50]
subjects such as people who come to your
[53]
website from the EU and that's why you
[54]
need to protect their privacy Google
[57]
Analytics has come out with certain
[59]
features even before the gdpr
[62]
was actually announced to protect users
[65]
privacy and in today's video we want to
[68]
go through these steps that you need to
[70]
take in order to get your google
[71]
analytics implementation ready for gdpr
[74]
now it's important to remember that
[76]
there are actual levels of compliance so
[78]
you could for example turn off Google
[81]
Analytics completely then you definitely
[83]
would not gather any data obviously but
[86]
you wouldn't be able to analyze your
[87]
user behavior on your website any more
[89]
you could take these steps that I will
[91]
show you in this video or leave them out
[93]
completely and ignore gdpr which I
[95]
wouldn't recommend now there are steps
[97]
that you need to take that could impact
[100]
your data quality you can mitigate these
[102]
data quality loss a little bit but in a
[106]
sense if you want to become fully gdpr
[108]
compliant then you need to put these
[110]
provisions in place so let's take a look
[112]
at these steps so here we are in our
[115]
Google Analytics account and we want to
[117]
get it cheap you are ready the first
[119]
thing that we want to check is there any
[120]
personal identifiable information it
[122]
goes already into this account this has
[124]
been a big no go Terms of Service of
[126]
Google Analytics anyways and so you want
[128]
to make sure that you are not
[129]
inadvertently
[130]
tracking any personal identifiable
[132]
information that might be an email
[134]
address first-name and so on
[135]
now this can happen for example if
[138]
you're emailed to a sensor user to your
[140]
website with a query string here and the
[143]
email address is in the query string
[145]
obviously Google Analytics is going to
[147]
send over I page you to the system and
[150]
also is going to send that information
[152]
of the URL to the system right here and
[157]
then it would be saved in the account
[159]
and you would be tracking personal
[162]
identifiable information in Google
[163]
Analytics so if you want a spot check
[166]
this you can go into your behavior
[168]
reports here and the site content and
[171]
look in the search bar if there's any
[174]
email address with the @ symbol for
[176]
example and if you see anything in your
[179]
URLs could also put an in first name or
[182]
any other identifiers that you can think
[185]
of so the URLs and the page paths seem
[188]
to be clear you're also not allowed to
[190]
send us in as custom dimensions so check
[193]
your custom dimensions as well if you
[195]
have any personal identifiable
[197]
information that you are sending over to
[199]
the system now if you find that you are
[202]
sending data over you might already be
[204]
at risk for violating the Terms of
[207]
Service of Google Analytics so you might
[209]
as well start with a new account but for
[212]
sure put in filters in place on the
[214]
measurement side so on Google tag
[217]
manager side where you are filtering out
[219]
that information before it goes on to
[221]
Google Analytics so this doesn't happen
[224]
again all right let's go through some
[226]
concrete steps that we need to take in
[229]
order to get gdpr compliant
[231]
first step being implementing the
[233]
aluminized IP feature well an ominous IP
[237]
feature takes out the last numbers of
[240]
the IP address and analytics would only
[243]
use the first digit to actually store
[247]
and process in the data set now that
[250]
might lead to a slight decrease of
[253]
accuracy in terms of the geolocation at
[256]
Google Analytics does but since this is
[258]
considered personal identifiable
[260]
information under new gdpr
[262]
regulations you
[264]
need to implement this for the
[266]
protection of European citizens so how
[269]
can you implement this feature it
[270]
depends on how you have installed Google
[273]
Analytics you need to do this on the
[275]
tracking side so on the actual tracking
[277]
code in Google tag manager you can go
[280]
into your Google Analytics page you
[281]
tagged or in your Google Analytics
[283]
settings variable and under the more
[286]
settings you'll be able to implement a
[290]
field to set option and here is the
[292]
option aluminized IP that you will set
[295]
to true and that will analyze your IP in
[300]
the future so just to try this out let's
[302]
save this refresh our preview in debug
[307]
mode go back to our page let's refresh
[310]
that
[310]
let's actually take our PRI out and our
[315]
page you tagged fires now I have a
[317]
plug-in here called the g8 debugger that
[320]
you can install and it will give you
[322]
some information in your developer tools
[324]
that you can open up under view
[326]
developer and then here developer tools
[329]
go straight to the JavaScript console
[331]
which I have opened here and there you
[333]
can see what information was sent over
[335]
to Google Analytics and here you can see
[337]
that there was an illuminance at P
[339]
equals true sent over so the IP address
[343]
will be mask automatically by Google
[346]
Analytics this is a feature that you
[348]
need to turn on on all your page view
[350]
and other hits that go out to Google
[352]
Analytics now if you're not working with
[355]
Google tag manager you might be doing
[357]
this in your analytics j/s for this
[360]
example you would need to implement the
[363]
GA set option and luminize IP to true or
[367]
if you're using the new global site tag
[370]
you need to add to your configurations
[373]
of your universal analytics code the
[376]
object here with a nominal IP true so it
[380]
will be configured in that way now once
[382]
you have that turned on you can go to
[384]
the next step which is disable
[386]
advertising features now if you are
[389]
familiar with display advertising
[390]
features it's a feature set within
[392]
Google Analytics that you can turn on
[394]
that gives you first of all the ability
[396]
to build remarketing
[398]
audiences from your custom segments and
[401]
also gives you some pretty interesting
[404]
data about the users coming to your
[406]
websites
[407]
now this is data that is actually
[410]
derived from different sources and
[412]
therefore is classified as third-party
[414]
data which you also don't want to
[416]
connect to your Google Analytics account
[418]
so it's safer to turn this feature
[421]
completely off how do you do this well
[424]
if you have it enabled on the
[426]
server-side then that means in your
[428]
admin section if you go to the tracking
[432]
info here then you will see data
[434]
collection and under these data
[437]
collections you see the remarketing on
[440]
and the advertising reporting features
[442]
on these need to be turned off now I
[446]
don't have edit rights to this account
[447]
but that might be possible in one of my
[450]
demo accounts here so you would turn
[454]
this off say if this iPod has in future
[458]
and you will be safe for gdpr our
[460]
purposes now it might be that you have
[463]
an older installation before google
[466]
analytics actually allowed you to turn
[467]
this on in the admin section where you
[471]
had an analytics j/s code where you edit
[474]
this little line to require these
[476]
display advertising features now
[479]
obviously you want to then delete this
[482]
line so it doesn't get tracked
[484]
specifically in your analytics j/s codes
[487]
or in a G tag you can add this allow
[490]
display features false and we would just
[493]
add this to the object in our
[496]
configuration file with a comma so
[499]
you're not sending this display feature
[502]
information on to Google Analytics
[504]
anymore and obviously if you had that
[507]
implemented in your Google tag manager
[509]
account you might find this under the
[512]
more settings under advertising that
[515]
this was set to true now you can set
[517]
this to no value set or explicitly false
[521]
at this point once you have saved this
[523]
we have now taken care of the display
[526]
advertising features last but not least
[529]
we have to talk about
[531]
the Google Analytics cookie now a cookie
[535]
get set when you have Google Analytics
[537]
installed with an odd animals ID that
[541]
gets stored in this cookie it's the
[543]
client ID
[544]
now gdpr is not super clear on all the
[549]
requirements we need to take in order to
[551]
become gdpr compliant in terms of
[554]
cookies there has been a lot of talk
[556]
around this but there is not yet a real
[559]
consensus on what needs to be done if
[561]
you want to be on the safe side you
[564]
might want to install a cookie consent
[567]
form that actually manages and make sure
[571]
that you don't get tracked when the user
[575]
doesn't explicitly consent to this
[578]
tracking that would mean you would have
[580]
a pop-up where there's a button and the
[583]
user actually can read about Google
[585]
Analytics and then also consent to the
[587]
data being sent to Google Analytics now
[590]
as you might have seen in my last video
[592]
I'm holding off on what the best
[595]
practice here is I want to give you some
[597]
pointers if you want to install this so
[599]
there's a great blog post by Vicki on
[601]
tools and widgets to manage cookie
[604]
consent different solutions out there I
[607]
wouldn't say that I have found the one
[610]
that I really like yet but this is a
[612]
great overview on what kind of providers
[615]
out there and how they are displaying
[617]
their consent forms the important part
[620]
would be that the user actually consents
[623]
to you sending that data only then you
[626]
can send over the hits to Google
[628]
Analytics or other tools that would
[631]
require another sets of rules triggers
[634]
in your Google tag manager or in your
[637]
implementation of analytics before this
[640]
data actually gets sent so you can't
[642]
just install the Google Analytics code
[644]
on your website anymore you would need
[647]
to actually have some kind of opt-in
[649]
gate that lets the user choose if the
[652]
information should be sent to Google
[655]
Analytics so if you want to install one
[657]
of these tools then I'd refer you to
[660]
look up how this would be done for your
[663]
situation now before I leave you to
[665]
implement these changes in your
[667]
analytics account I also want to mention
[669]
that google has released a new version
[672]
of the processing terms that you can
[675]
send into Google and they will make a
[677]
processing agreement with you they also
[680]
launched a new feature which entails
[682]
data retention so you can change when
[685]
your data should expire and they will
[688]
come out with a specific tool to delete
[690]
data within your Google Analytics
[692]
account that hasn't been released yet as
[695]
of recording of this video now at the
[697]
end I will also want to mention that
[699]
this is maybe a pretty extreme step for
[703]
you because you will lose data in your
[705]
account you will be missing out on that
[707]
great demographics information so how
[709]
could you mitigate the damages that this
[713]
makes to your data quality well you
[715]
could take these measures that we just
[717]
went through only for European citizens
[720]
so if you have a broad user base all
[723]
over the world you may only want to take
[726]
these steps for European citizens it is
[729]
possible to install these features based
[731]
on the location of the user for that you
[734]
will need a geolocation API that
[738]
actually detects where the user is from
[740]
at the point of him being on your
[743]
website and then enabling showing the
[744]
cookie consent form and humanizing his
[747]
appeal and so on again this would add
[750]
another technical layer to your analytic
[753]
setup there is a API here for example
[756]
from geo plugin that lets you look up
[759]
where the user is currently located this
[762]
is not something that Google tag manager
[764]
actually provides it's not part of
[767]
JavaScript by default so you can't look
[770]
it up through tag manager just through
[772]
variables for example you will need a
[775]
third party such as this geo plug-in API
[779]
to locate a user if you want to do that
[782]
then I will link up some resources down
[785]
below a great discussion I read on the
[788]
Google tag manager forum on how to do
[790]
that
[791]
all right so there you have it these are
[793]
the points that you need to take care of
[795]
in your Google Analytics account again
[797]
there are levels of compliance so you
[800]
could get some data back or mitigate the
[803]
data quality loss by putting something
[806]
into place like geolocation where you
[808]
only activate certain features for
[810]
certain users who come from the European
[811]
Union but obviously this takes a lot
[814]
more implementation then we have done
[815]
today
[816]
now it's probable that there will be
[818]
more changes to come in Google Analytics
[820]
and the privacy laws is always a work in
[823]
progress so we will see how the best
[825]
practices and the lawsuits will inform
[827]
this if there's anything new then I will
[830]
inform you on this channel so make sure
[832]
to subscribe and also if you want to
[833]
find out more about gdpr we have done
[836]
several videos on this as well one of
[838]
them up there
[839]
now my name is Julien til next time
