own mark meredith reporting live from
[1]
the white house with the latest this
[3]
meeting definitely going to happen today
[5]
dana it sure looks like it doesn't look
[6]
like the winter weather is going to
[7]
impact it the president still expected
[9]
to meet with some senate republicans
[11]
here at the white house
[12]
later on this afternoon this group of
[13]
republicans proposing their own coven 19
[16]
economic stimulus package
[17]
among those people we're expecting here
[19]
at the white house today susan collins
[20]
of maine rob portman of ohio
[22]
and mitt romney of utah the lawmakers
[24]
sending the president a letter over the
[25]
weekend saying
[26]
we recognize your calls for unity and
[28]
want to work in good
[30]
faith with your administration to meet
[32]
the health economic
[33]
and societal challenges of the kovic
[35]
crisis now they are proposing a number
[37]
of things here including a 600 billion
[40]
dollar overall package
[41]
that would have about a thousand dollars
[43]
for stimulus checks but they would be
[44]
phased out by certain incomes
[46]
it would also extend enhancing the
[47]
federal unemployment benefit
[49]
and offer more money for food assistance
[50]
programs
[53]
we think there's a lot here to work for
[55]
to work with we hope
[57]
we finally start getting that bipartisan
[59]
and with the white house negotiation
[61]
so far we've not received it now this
[64]
proposal spends a lot less than what
[66]
democrats have been pushing they've been
[68]
going for that 1.9 trillion dollar
[70]
economic
[70]
economic stimulus package the white
[72]
house says it wants to hear what these
[73]
lawmakers have to say
[75]
but senate democrats are less believing
[77]
that this is actually something that
[78]
will work when it comes to a smaller
[80]
package
[80]
and trying to jump start the economy
[84]
we hope that we can move forward in a
[87]
bipartisan way with our republican
[89]
colleagues cooperating
[91]
but we need big bold action and if we
[93]
can't move forward
[95]
with them we'll have to do it on our own
[99]
getting the job done in a big bold way
[102]
is the number one priority
[105]
now remember that democrats hold a
[107]
narrow majority in both the house and
[108]
the senate so getting any legislation
[110]
passed solely on party lines
[112]
is not always guaranteed so they may
[114]
have to the white house may have to rely
[115]
on more republicans
[116]
in order to get a bill done quickly as
[119]
we expect that meeting will be happening
[120]
in the five o'clock hour cameras
[122]
expected to be brought in dana
[123]
and while i mentioned the snow is not
[124]
impacting that meeting it has changed
[126]
the president's schedule
[127]
he won't be going over to the state
[128]
department later on today and it looks
[130]
like the senate is going to wait another
[132]
day to confirm his
[133]
homeland security secretary nominee and
[135]
dana that could impact the president's
[136]
plans to talk about immigration tomorrow
[138]
we'll find out a little bit later on
[140]
today mark meredith with a full update
[142]
thank you so much we want to bring in
[143]
martissanamo
[144]
alithee moe and mark on monday fox news
[146]
contributors gentlemen good morning to
[148]
both of you
[148]
unity is out the door good morning or
[150]
was it even in the room at first mark
[152]
what do you think
[155]
well first of all i'm ready for this
[156]
segment because i've got my banana so
[157]
i'm
[158]
fired up and ready to go look if joe
[161]
biden does not work with these
[163]
republicans and make this proposal
[165]
the basis of a bipartisan covet relief
[168]
package then his inaugural address about
[170]
unity and bipartisanship was a big lie
[172]
uh he this is the test of biden's uh
[175]
commitment to unity and bipartisanship
[176]
he has 10 republicans coming to him
[178]
willing to support 600 billion covered
[181]
relief packages on top of the 900
[183]
billion already passed just a few weeks
[184]
ago so 1.5 trillion dollars not
[186]
nothing to sneeze at a lot of
[188]
republicans don't think we need another
[189]
coveted relief package right now
[191]
they're providing 10 votes which means a
[193]
bipartisan filibuster-proof majority
[196]
for this package because you need 60
[198]
votes to break a filibuster they're
[199]
providing the 10 republicans to do that
[201]
if joe biden looks at that and says
[202]
sorry folks not good enough
[204]
i'm going to ram through my almost 2
[206]
trillion dollar package on
[207]
just with democratic votes using the
[209]
reconciliation process
[210]
then bipartisanship is dead and all the
[213]
rhetoric about unity and cooperation and
[215]
compromise is a big lie
[217]
so this is a big test for joe biden
[219]
today over the weekend as i read all the
[220]
coverage
[221]
mo i felt like you could feel a
[223]
noticeable shift in the tone of coverage
[225]
to the point uh that mark is just making
[227]
here
[227]
let me listen to two things here's brian
[229]
dees he's the president's nec director
[231]
national economic council director
[233]
on this idea go ahead we're certainly
[236]
open to input from
[238]
anywhere where we can find a
[239]
constructive idea to make this package
[242]
as effective as possible
[243]
but the president is uncompromising when
[246]
it comes to the speed that we need to
[248]
act at
[248]
to address this crisis however bernie
[251]
sanders
[252]
he's got to say listen to this
[255]
we all want bipartisanship and i think
[257]
you're going to see more of it
[258]
as we move down the pipe we are going to
[260]
look forward to working with republicans
[262]
but right now this country faces
[266]
an unprecedented set of crises
[269]
and mow the third leg of the democratic
[271]
stool in this case joe manchin listen to
[273]
what he had to say
[274]
um when joe when kamal harris the vice
[276]
president came to his state or what you
[277]
know the media in his state to try to
[279]
pressure him he said
[280]
i saw the interview i couldn't believe
[282]
it no one called me about it
[283]
we're going to try to find a bipartisan
[285]
pathway forward but we need to work
[287]
together
[288]
that's not a way of working together and
[289]
he's talking about internal democratic
[291]
issues
[292]
mo tell us what you think
[297]
um look i don't think this is an either
[299]
or right i mean
[300]
the legislative process is a give and
[302]
take and i'm just happy to see
[304]
washington getting back to that give and
[306]
take with lots of sharp elbows
[308]
which which many of us have felt uh
[311]
throughout our careers but the president
[314]
put forward a really bold
[316]
proposal now he's about to sit down with
[318]
a bipartisan group of senators
[320]
and see where they meet i suspect they
[322]
will meet i
[324]
you know i i i don't disagree with a lot
[327]
of what mark said but when mark
[329]
said that there are a lot of republicans
[331]
out there who don't believe we need
[332]
anything i i think there's a lot of
[335]
people out there good
[337]
hard-working americans who are
[339]
struggling who would agree that we need
[341]
something i'm glad to see that there's a
[343]
bipartisan group of senators who believe
[345]
we need something they're going to sit
[346]
down today let's see where we meet
[348]
it'll hopefully be more than the 600
[350]
billion it will probably
[352]
less than 1.9 trillion
[355]
but i agree with the president that we
[357]
need to move fast on this so let's see
[358]
what the process is
[360]
you know if you didn't have this group
[362]
of republicans coming up with this plan
[364]
who knows when there would be a meeting
[366]
because there was nothing on the
[367]
schedule until they went public with it
[371]
yeah so so joe biden introduced his 1.9
[374]
trillion dollars
[375]
without talking to a single republican
[377]
without talking to recovering the
[378]
democrats on capitol hill he just
[379]
proposed
[380]
what he wanted and put it out there okay
[382]
fine so that's a starting point but the
[383]
idea that you're going to
[385]
ram that through using reconciliation
[386]
and then republicans can come along or
[388]
not
[389]
is not bipartisanship and what what he
[391]
needs to realize is what's the x factor
[393]
here as you mentioned is joe manchin so
[395]
this this proposal came out of a
[398]
bipartisan group led by susan collins
[401]
and joe manchin joe manchin
[402]
is not simply sitting on the sidelines
[404]
he helped craft this for this proposal
[406]
that's being presented to
[407]
uh to to uh the president right now so
[410]
you know
[410]
he can he's staying on the sidelines i
[412]
think partly because
[414]
he wants joe biden to make the choice
[415]
for bipartisanship on his own rather
[417]
than being forced into it
[418]
but you know when bernie sanders says we
[420]
need to push forward we need with 1.9
[422]
trillion we've got the votes well
[423]
let me give you some a math lesson 50
[426]
democrats minus joe manchin is 49 votes
[428]
and 49 votes gets you
[430]
uh bupkus in the united states senate
[432]
sign of things to come though when
[434]
with margins this type
[439]
uh yeah look i think there's going to
[440]
with margins this height
[442]
and mark and i have agreed on this in
[444]
the past i i think that you're going to
[446]
see
[446]
a move towards that middle group of
[449]
senators people like mansion
[451]
cinema on the democratic side people
[454]
like romney and collins and
[456]
others on the republican side they are
[457]
going to have a lot of sway over the
[459]
legislative process moving forward
[461]
and so everybody whether it's mitch
[463]
mcconnell or
[464]
the white house uh ought to pay special
[466]
attention to that group
[468]
pay attention to chuck schumer's words
[469]
on sunday bold chains we're going to get
[471]
that no matter what
[472]
gentlemen thank you nice to see on a
[474]
monday morning mo and mark
[476]
thanks
