What's inside a Shot Put Ball? - YouTube
Channel: What's Inside?
[0]
- Hey, welcome back to What's Inside.
[1]
Today we're at our local track
[3]
and we have a very special
ball today, Lincoln.
[6]
- Heavy, shot put ball.
[9]
- Alright, PortaPit eight pound,
[11]
made in India shot put ball.
[14]
This is gonna be an interesting one.
[16]
I'm guessing it's just pure steel or metal
[19]
because it is heavy but
before we cut it open,
[21]
let's have a little fun with it.
[23]
Portapit.
[30]
- This is called Shot
Put Off the Bleachers.
[38]
This is called Shot Put Off the Bleachers.
[43]
- [Voiceover] Ooh, it sunk right in.
[46]
Oh yeah, that's a pretty good hole there.
[51]
Nice job.
[52]
Will this ball roll 50
yards? Let's find out.
[56]
Alright, 50 yards!
[65]
Go! Go!
[66]
No, go!
[70]
Yeah, that counts!
[72]
Okay, it's time to cut
open this shot put ball.
[74]
We've had a lot of fun with it
[76]
and hopefully this saw blade
will work to cut it open.
[79]
This thing is hard steel
so think it's gonna work?
[83]
- Pretty sure, with that saw.
[86]
- Alright, let's do it.
[88]
Alright, here we go.
[92]
(saw cutting)
[139]
- [Voiceover] It's melting.
[140]
- [Voiceover] It's totally melting.
[141]
The ball is so hot that
you can see it's bubbling
[145]
and it's melting.
[146]
It's making it easier to cut but the thing
[149]
is melting like crazy.
[152]
- [Voiceover] Don't touch it, is that hot?
[155]
- [Voiceover] Woohoo, that is so hot.
[158]
This blade is getting destroyed.
[162]
It's falling apart piece by piece
[165]
from going at this strong metal.
[167]
I mean, if you look at this blade,
[168]
it's made to cut metal but this ball
[171]
is really putting it to the test.
[175]
And this blade I just bought this morning.
[177]
It's the second blade
that we've put on here
[179]
so this ball is one tough ball.
[182]
We're getting very close.
[184]
Like we just have a little part
[187]
that we need to connect and we'll have it.
[195]
There's another blade.
[196]
- [Voiceover] There goes the other saw.
[198]
- [Voiceover] Aw, no.
[199]
- Well, we've blown out two saw blades
[202]
and now we're gonna take this chisel
[203]
and see if we can spread
it open a little bit.
[205]
Possibly even break it
open just to make it
[207]
a little easier on the
last little part of metal
[209]
that we have left.
[211]
So let's hit this thing.
[214]
(hammer hitting)
[220]
That's going in there, that's for sure.
[226]
(gasps)
[229]
(cheering)
[231]
We did it!
[233]
We did it!
[234]
- Look at that! Still so heavy.
[237]
- Look at the inside of that!
[240]
That is shiny from all the
blade cutting that we did.
[243]
- It looks like the saw just
polished the outside of it
[247]
and then this is the rough
kind of metal inside of it
[251]
'cause we used that chisel kind of thing.
[255]
There's like a rainbow right there.
[258]
That's cool, I think.
[259]
- That is cool, it's actually beautiful.
[261]
It looks like polished steel.
[263]
It's heavy so I'm guessing
this is four pounds each.
[265]
We lost a lot of it
when we cut it in half.
[268]
I'm gonna throw this up in the air
[269]
and see what effect it has on the asphalt.
[276]
Oh, no. Look at that dent it made.
[282]
Whoa, this just half of the ball.
[283]
This is four pounds and
look at that on asphalt.
[288]
No wonder it was so hard
to cut this thing open.
[290]
Mystery solved.
[291]
That is what's inside of a shot put ball.
[294]
This ball was very, very fun to cut open.
[297]
- And tough.
[298]
- Yes, very tough.
[299]
We had two saw blades,
three different nights
[301]
we had to cut it open.
[302]
And what finally got it was that chisel
[304]
so we appreciate you watching.
