New S-Stock Trains on the Metropolitan Line - YouTube

Today we're on the Metropolitan line trying  to find and go for a ride on the first of  

191 new trains that are coming to the line the biggest single order  

of rolling stock ever made in the history  of UK railways

This is the old style train

we're gonna catch this one on our way to Watford to try and catch a glimpse of the new S-Stock  

the trains have faster acceleration than the  existing stock and although they're able to run  

faster they'll be constrained until the signalling  has been upgraded

so these trains have been ferrying passengers for the last 50 years

that's all about to change though we're on the hunt to look out for the new S-Stock

which is going to revolutionise the way that we travel on the Underground

we've come here to Croxley because any second now the new train is about to arrive

so here is the new train arriving, Croxley station slightly late it's 19:41 now but ... here it is!

No ... no wave wow, OK

wow it's got that ... new smell to it

so this is an old style train

what people like about the trains are lots of seating

nice comfy high back seats as well space for your luggage

so gone are the high back seats of the old style trains

new .. moqette design

it's very nice but of course the only air-conditioning on the old style trains is this!

no windows which you can open at all

obviously air conditioning

first trains in a nearly hundred and fifty years to have air conditioning

I guess  and I guess it's here I guess it comes out

of the roof here so on the old trains there were  

there were eight separate carriages

you can walk all the way through the train

I'm gonna go and explore the rest of the train

one of the things that I liked  about the old trains was that  

you could stretch out on your journey home

of course how do you have a snooze?

There's a sign that says tell us what you think  we would like to hear your comment and suggestionst  

to help us make improvements to our services

we really interesting to hear what people think of the new train

which they like it's open you  know about lucky turn but it are connecting look very comfortable I'm always called me  here so I don't really need air conditioning  

the official number on  the seating is that they're down from 448 seats to 306

that's a hundred and forty two  less but more people will be able to squeeze  

in in the rush hour due to more standing  room

there's space for wheelchair users too

the doors have been designed wider and lower  to give easier access to people in wheelchairs

and with other disabilities and they've also  been designed to be at the same level as the  

platforms as well to make access easier for  all passengers

these new metropolitan Line trains

have eight carriages on them and will be  rolled out between now and the end of 2010

new trains will then be delivered to the circle  district and Hammersmith & City lines

that are seven cars in length

and after that well maybe  then the Bakerloo line will get new trains in around 2018

harrow-on-the-hill that was the  end of our short but very enjoyable journey on the new train

so we're just gonna see it off  wonder if it will go back on itself, or carry on

up to the next stop straight

this train terminates here  so it's time to get the old-style train back home
