How Nonprofit Bookkeeping Is Different To Regular Bookkeeping - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[3]
g'day justin hulk here from wright
[5]
source we're talking not for profits
[7]
and bookkeeping for not for profits how
[8]
that's different from
[10]
normal bookkeeping no this is an
[12]
exciting one i'm really looking forward
[13]
to it so
[14]
let's get into it before i get into
[16]
what's different
[18]
let's just talk about why i want to talk
[20]
about this and that's
[22]
when you're a not-for-profit and you're
[23]
looking for a bookkeeper whether it be
[25]
in-house or or an
[26]
outsourced provider either way you want
[28]
to make sure that they've got the skills
[30]
that are required to meet the needs of
[33]
your organization so
[34]
this is why i suppose this video is
[36]
important to understand those
[37]
peculiar things for not-for-profit that
[41]
may not necessarily be something a
[43]
normal bookkeeper is used to dealing
[44]
with so
[44]
let's dive in first thing that
[47]
bookkeeper will need to deal with in a
[48]
not-for-profit that is
[50]
unique to not-for-profit space is how
[53]
you deal with grants now grants are
[57]
a little different enough for profit
[58]
space where compared to the commercial
[60]
stuff
[61]
in terms of you need to be able to equip
[63]
the grants which is again similar to
[66]
your commercial grants but these grants
[69]
can quite often be going for a longer
[70]
period of time so you need to be
[72]
able to record that information in terms
[75]
of the costs
[76]
correctly and be able to report back on
[78]
it to understand where things are at
[80]
with the grant because a not-for-profit
[81]
is going to need to manage
[83]
where where things are at and know if
[85]
they're under over spending on that
[86]
grant
[87]
the other thing then from a grant
[89]
perspective is also the income side of
[91]
things
[92]
so because these are often large grants
[94]
and longer periods of time
[96]
is how you recognize the income side of
[98]
the grants
[99]
can be a little more tricky than not for
[100]
profit because it can often depend on
[102]
the grand structure
[103]
the timing the agreements what's
[106]
happened previously
[107]
and all that all those aspects feed into
[109]
how you actually recognize your income
[111]
or revenue
[112]
that's coming off the grant in the
[114]
account the next thing that your
[116]
bookkeeper needs to have an appreciation
[118]
of and potentially knowledge of
[119]
is salary packaging and fbt because
[124]
not-for-profits have an fbt concession
[128]
which means that effectively they're
[130]
able to pay their employees
[133]
in kind or in a different way
[137]
which would normally be subject to fbt
[139]
and other commercial
[141]
businesses but because of this
[142]
concession they can do things
[145]
like pay for employees rent which would
[148]
if a normal
[149]
organization was to do that would
[151]
attract fbt
[153]
if it's done in a certain way for
[155]
not-for-profits which is completely
[157]
legitimate and there are
[160]
legislation in place to allow this to
[162]
happen the not-for-profit doesn't have
[164]
to pay
[164]
fbt now these things were put in place
[166]
to assist not-for-profits
[168]
in attracting quality employees without
[172]
having to necessarily pay the full
[173]
commercial rate
[175]
having an understanding of how that fbt
[177]
concession works
[178]
how it interplays the salary packaging
[180]
and then making sure that the processes
[182]
are put in place to ensure that it's
[185]
taken
[186]
full advantage of for the employee and
[187]
the employer's point of view
[189]
but also that it's not done incorrectly
[191]
because with anything done with salary
[193]
if you do it incorrectly can have an
[195]
impact on both the employee
[196]
and the employer so an appreciation and
[199]
an understanding of fbt
[201]
and salary packaging is something that a
[203]
bookkeeper needs
[204]
when they're dealing in the
[205]
not-for-profit space the next thing they
[207]
need to understand
[208]
is they need to have a good
[209]
understanding of gst now most i would
[212]
say all bookkeepers have a good
[213]
understanding of gst
[214]
but gst as it can apply to not for
[217]
profits because again with
[218]
not-for-profits there's another
[220]
a number of concessions in terms of gst
[222]
that can be taken advantage of in terms
[225]
of
[225]
how your not-for-profit run so how you
[228]
manage fundraising events
[229]
how also you deal with gst that relates
[232]
to
[233]
grants donations or sponsorship and how
[236]
that is differently
[237]
accounted for and reported in your
[240]
accounts
[241]
also if you've got operations that
[244]
aren't running
[245]
at a commercially viable rate there are
[248]
some concessions there for gst as well
[250]
depending on the percentages and how you
[251]
put that all together so
[254]
having an appreciation of those things
[256]
in terms of the gst
[257]
space and how they affect the operations
[260]
of the organization and how things need
[262]
to be accounted for in the books
[264]
can be very important and can help again
[266]
the not-for-profit uh
[268]
operate efficiently and make the most of
[270]
the funds that have available to
[272]
them the last thing a bookkeeper needs
[274]
to be able to
[275]
have an appreciation of when dealing
[277]
with a not-for-profit
[278]
is the number of different stakeholders
[280]
that require reporting
[282]
from the not-for-profit and how that
[283]
reporting can be different
[285]
so for example a not-for-profit often
[287]
has a board
[289]
and they will want reporting in a
[292]
certain way to them at a certain
[293]
frequency so whether they have a monthly
[295]
report and they want a certain format
[296]
and see certain things they'll want that
[299]
distributed to them
[301]
similarly a not-for-profit will also
[302]
have to do financial reporting
[304]
that may not be done in the same way as
[307]
the board reporting there are different
[308]
interpretations and different ways you
[310]
need to compile it
[311]
being able to create your base data that
[314]
the bookkeeper is putting together
[315]
that allows you to report one way for
[317]
the board and potentially another way
[319]
for your financial statements is
[321]
important
[323]
they'll also potentially need to be able
[325]
to report back to
[326]
large donors or sponsors in terms of
[329]
where the funds have gone how they've
[331]
been utilized so being able to
[333]
maintain your books in a way that allows
[336]
these things to be reported on
[338]
differently but still maintain that
[340]
transparency
[342]
is definitely a skill set that is unique
[344]
to the not
[345]
profit space and something you should
[347]
consider when you're looking
[348]
for your bookkeeper whether they got
[350]
those skills so that's a little bit of
[351]
an insight in terms of
[353]
some specific areas that a bookkeeper
[355]
needs to be across when you're looking
[357]
to hire someone to be your
[358]
bookkeeper in the not-for-profit space
[360]
and also if you're a bookkeeper is
[362]
looking to get into the not-for-profit
[363]
space
[364]
there are things that you should look to
[366]
you know get yourself up to speed off
[368]
because that can help you provide a
[369]
better service
