Channel: Eat Baila Travel
[0]
Hey welcome to Eat, Baila, Travel a channel for聽foodies salseros y aventureros my name is Jenny.
[0]
Kevin today is behind the camera. Today we'd like to聽share our experience and our tips for getting聽聽
[10]
your mexican citizenship. I won't say it was a very聽easy experience because we had some challenges in聽聽
[17]
getting the documents. And I remember from our聽research experience how difficult it was to get聽聽
[22]
it all together. So we thought it might be helpful聽 to share this experience with you all as you're聽聽
[27]
getting ready. So both Kevin and I are born in聽
Chicago raised in Chicago but raised by mexican聽聽
[33]
immigrants who raised us with mexican culture聽and ideals and so we thought what a better way聽
[39]
to honor our culture than to feel like we聽
belong to both. We know that documentation聽聽
[44]
isn't everything in this world but if you聽
can have something that validates who you are聽聽
[48]
that's kind of where we come from and one of the聽many reasons that we decided to get our mexican聽citizenship.
[52]
Because there's so much to know about聽
the process we've decided to break this video up聽聽
[57]
into three parts this is part one welcome! And we聽will be discussing how to prepare your documents聽聽
[64]
for your appointment. Part two, we'll give聽
step-by-step instructions on how to make the聽聽
[68]
appointment because you've got to make the right聽one and navigating mexican government websites聽聽
[73]
are the worst. Part three, is the actual appointment聽itself what to expect day of and what it's going聽聽
[79]
to look like how to get ready and be ready for聽
that day. Having dual citizenship with the U.S聽聽
[84]
and Mexico has some really great benefits which聽we'll tell you at the end of this video so stay聽聽
[88]
tuned with us and for now let's jump straight to聽work. The process of getting a mexican citizenship聽聽
[93]
is known as a registro civil. The registro civil is聽essentially the process of registering yourself聽聽
[101]
as a foreign-born mexican. We recommend before聽you even make the appointment make sure you've got聽聽
[107]
all your documents together the first thing you're聽going to need is the application itself which you聽聽
[112]
can download directly from a link that we provided聽in the description below. That application actually聽聽
[116]
has all the instructions for the process right聽
in there but if you're more of a visual learner聽聽
[121]
stick around with us so we can help explain the聽process and give you some tips from our experience.聽
[125]
Number two you'll need two copies of your original聽birth certificate and not just any copies you need聽聽
[131]
to provide the long version how to know whether聽you have the long version of the short version聽聽
[136]
the long version is going to include the time聽
that you were born whereas the short version聽聽
[141]
usually doesn't. Number three, you'll need a聽
valid identification with two letter size聽聽
[146]
photocopies, these identifications can include聽a driver's license a state id or a passport as聽聽
[152]
long as it's got your picture and your name. And聽then here's the very important part you want to聽聽
[158]
make sure that all of your documents match up聽
exactly regardless of the ones you you choose聽聽
[162]
to take with you if your birth certificate says聽
kevin john doe and your driver's license just says聽聽
[168]
kevin doe that's not gonna match up and they won't聽accept that. Number four, you'll need both your聽聽
[175]
parents original or certified birth certificates聽
along with two letter size photocopies of each聽聽
[181]
you only really need one parent to have聽
mexican citizenship. But if both have them great聽聽
[187]
you'll still need both their information we聽
get this question a lot what if only one parent聽聽
[192]
was a mexican citizen one parent is fine you'll聽still need to bring information on both parents.聽
[197]
If one or both parents are deceased you'll聽
need to bring a death certificate along with聽聽
[202]
their birth certificate. Number five, you'll聽
need a valid identification for each parent聽聽
[207]
this can include a state id a driver's license a聽
passport or some sort of mexican id. For mexican聽聽
[213]
id they can use their mexican passport their聽
voting credential or their matricula consulate聽聽
[218]
again all the names must match or else they聽
won't take it. Kevin had an issue where his聽聽
[225]
father's birth certificate had an extra initial聽
that was not existent on his current ids so they聽聽
[233]
would not accept that as the same person it took聽kevin years to correct his father's mexican birth聽聽
[240]
certificate there was an error that no one ever聽really paid attention to and unfortunately that's聽聽
[245]
really common with mexican birth certificates聽there are errors all the time so you'll definitely聽聽
[251]
want to make sure and go through whatever聽
steps you need to to get documents corrected we聽聽
[257]
tried to get it corrected in the states but聽
because it was a mexican birth certificate聽聽
[261]
we had to have it corrected in mexico so that was聽a challenge but eventually i got done and it was聽聽
[267]
totally worth it number six you'll need a marriage聽certificate only if your parents were married six聽聽
[274]
months before you were born if they were married聽after that point then you will need to have your聽聽
[280]
father present for your mexican registration if聽your father cannot attend for whatever reason he聽聽
[286]
will need to obtain a poder especial or a special聽power of attorney from a notary public in mexico聽聽
[295]
or issued by a consulate of mexico why is this聽necessary well the consulate requires parental聽聽
[303]
permission from your father's side to register聽
you as a mexican with a mexican government if聽聽
[309]
your father wasn't born in mexico but your mother聽was then your mother must attend the appointment聽聽
[314]
with you or give you that power of attorney number聽seven this is not a document but these are people聽聽
[320]
you'll need to ask two witnesses to attend with聽you the day of your appointment these witnesses聽聽
[325]
do not have to be u.s citizens but they do need聽to have some sort of valid id and be over the age聽聽
[330]
of 18. if you're unable to take witnesses with you聽the consulate will help you get to volunteers and聽聽
[337]
once you have all your paperwork lined up you're聽ready to go make your appointment for registration聽聽
[343]
i threw in a few tips as i was giving you the聽
application requirements but there are a few聽聽
[348]
that i want to emphasize and a few additional ones聽from our experience that we want to share with you聽聽
[353]
first we recommend getting a really good folder to聽keep all your documents together where they won't聽聽
[357]
slip out we like the ones that open up and clip聽open sticky notes are best friends so if there's聽聽
[363]
anything missing or a change that needs to be聽made we write it on the sticky note and stick it聽聽
[367]
on the document or on the front of the folder our聽second tip is something that we recommend everyone聽聽
[371]
do and something we regret not doing if you have a聽consulate close to you it's worth taking the trip聽聽
[378]
to have them proof your documents before your聽appointment you don't need an appointment with聽
[383]
them to ask to review your documents you can聽just walk in and ask for the registro civil desk聽聽
[389]
just let them know you want someone to review your聽documents and ahead of time for your appointment聽聽
[394]
they will review for you but they won't do the聽
process for you without the appointment so again聽聽
[399]
it's really worth just getting them to review聽
it and say let have them tell you yes everything聽聽
[404]
looks good or no this is what you need to fix聽
trust me this is a tip worth taking the time to聽聽
[410]
take advantage of sometimes we think that we have聽everything in order and everything looks right聽聽
[415]
but once you take it to them it's worth having聽
them proofread it so they can tell you what's聽聽
[418]
wrong we had an experience where we both showed聽up to our appointments separately we had to聽聽
[422]
take time off work to do this and there's no worse聽feeling than walking in ready and excited and then聽聽
[427]
being sent home without your mexican citizenship聽remember the american government and the mexican聽聽
[434]
government systems are very very different and we聽learned a lot about how these systems work through聽聽
[440]
this experience so just be aware that there might聽be some challenges you'll face other people are聽聽
[444]
luckier and everything looks great and they get聽it easy peasy but for some of us who have errors聽聽
[450]
in our documents it's just a few extra steps to聽take but i promise you it is totally worth it聽聽
[457]
now here are some of those benefits that we talked聽about and why we keep saying is so worth it first聽聽
[462]
first and foremost um it makes it easy to travel聽between the us and mexico when like when you're聽聽
[468]
flying between countries you can present both聽passports and enter mexico with your mexican聽聽
[474]
passport and enter the united states with the聽
united states passport they might ask you for聽聽
[478]
both just to make sure they know how the how聽you came in or how you're exiting the country聽聽
[483]
but i haven't had any issues whatsoever and i have聽two completely different names on my passport i聽聽
[488]
have my married name and my birth name with both聽my parents last night number two you can buy land聽聽
[496]
vote or live in mexico without any restrictions聽as a foreigner or a tourist and for people who聽聽
[503]
are wanting to reconnect with their roots we聽
are in mexico we don't have to worry about聽聽
[509]
going back to the us and you know doing a聽
whole another process to become a citizen聽聽
[513]
as a foreigner i think foreigners have it聽
much harder and and last but definitely not聽聽
[518]
least one of our favorite perks of having two聽
passports is the perks for travel there are聽聽
[523]
certain countries that will require tourist visas聽for americans such as formerly brazil used to聽聽
[530]
require visa for americans but not for mexicans聽even though that's no longer the case there聽聽
[535]
are lots of countries that will have different聽
requirements for americans versus mexicans and you聽聽
[539]
can just you know use whichever one is convenient聽for you thank you guys so much for watching i聽聽
[546]
hope this video was helpful for you but if you聽
have any questions please let us know down below聽聽
[551]
don't forget to check out the next video聽
in the series so that you can see exactly聽聽
[554]
how to make the appointment and then聽
how to get ready for the big day
[559]
sequence ciao
