Rotate Text in Microsoft Word - vertical, angled & flipped - YouTube
Channel: Helen Bradley
[1]
Hello, I'm Helen Bradley.
[2]
Welcome to this video tutorial.
[4]
In this tutorial we're going to take some
of the mystery out of rotating text in Microsoft
[9]
Word.
[11]
Before we get started with this tutorial let's
have a look and see what it is that we're
[15]
trying to do.
[16]
What we're trying to do is rotate text on
a page not even necessarily 180 degrees or
[23]
90 degrees on the page but we may also want
to rotate our text through a different rotation.
[28]
This one is just not behaving nicely for me
right now but we may want to rotate our text
[34]
to 45 degrees or some different value.
[38]
And that has not been easy.
[40]
In earlier versions of Word from Word 2007
backwards including unfortunately Word 2007
[48]
none of these options, well only one of these
options, was actually really available to
[53]
us.
[54]
But I'm going to start in Word 2013 because
there are heaps of options in Word 2013 and
[58]
then in a minute we'll go back to Word 2007
and see what your options are for Word 2007
[65]
and Word 2003.
[67]
Now in 2013 there are heaps of options.
[70]
One of them is Insert Textbox.
[72]
I mean you can just draw a textbox on the
screen and put your text in here.
[80]
Now textboxes can be rotated.
[82]
So we can rotate it through any degree and
you can see that the text is rotating with
[87]
the textbox.
[89]
If you don't like the edges on it that's fine.
[91]
Drawing Tools, Format tab, Shape Outline,
No Outline and now your text is rotated but
[98]
you can't see the outline of the box that
it's in.
[102]
You can of course format your text.
[104]
So any of the text that we're talking about
in any of these items can be sized and colored
[110]
and formatted with the font of choice, etc.
[114]
So a textbox is one of your options.
[117]
One of the other options is a shape, Insert
Shapes and then choose a shape.
[122]
I'm going to choose this shape here, draw
it on the screen, type my text in it, size
[130]
it as we could with any of the other options
and then we can rotate it.
[136]
So let's grab the shape and as we rotate the
shape the text is rotated with it.
[141]
Now this did not happen in Word 2007 or Word
2003.
[147]
The new graphics engine in Word 2010 allowed
us to do that so that's why we can get it
[153]
in 2010 and 2013.
[155]
So that's another option.
[157]
Any of the shapes can have text placed in
them and it can be rotated.
[162]
Now one of the options we used to use which
is now not really quite so attractive because
[166]
we have so many other options is WordArt,
Insert WordArt.
[171]
And we'll just select one of these WordArt
objects and then we can type our text in here.
[179]
And this can be rotated and also the text
can be formatted.
[183]
It can be turned upside down.
[185]
As I said it's been traditionally one of the
options that we have had for rotating text
[190]
because it's just been so good at it.
[193]
But now we have so many other options we really
don't need to resort to WordArt anymore.
[199]
Now there is one other option that you can
use.
[202]
It's not one I particularly like but it is
an option and that is just a single cell table.
[208]
This is a table with one row and one column
and I've placed my text in it.
[213]
With my text in it I can choose the Table
Tools, Layout tab and click this Text Direction
[218]
option and there are three options for rotating
the text inside this single cell table.
[225]
But as I said this is the least appropriate
option nowadays because we just have so many
[229]
other really good options in Word 2010 and
2013.
[235]
But now let's take a trip back in time and
let's head back to Word 2007 because things
[240]
aren't nearly as happy in Word 2007.
[244]
Let's go first to our textbox, Insert Textbox,
Draw Textbox, Draw Textbox on the Screen and
[255]
unfortunately this textbox even though its
wrapping is in front of text it is not going
[260]
anywhere.
[261]
You can't rotate it.
[262]
So the only thing that you can do is change
the text direction and it's one of those three
[267]
options that we saw inside a table cell in
Word 2013 and Word 2010.
[273]
So this is your only option here.
[276]
You get three versions of rotating your text.
[280]
Now if one of these is what you want then
that may work for you.
[283]
If you want your text rotated to this sort
of angled up 90 degree rotation then use it.
[291]
It has always been one of the options that
we've had.
[294]
It's just that we can't get 45 degrees or
anything out of a textbox.
[299]
We can get rid of the edges of a textbox,
Shape Outline, No Outline.
[304]
And so you can have text rotated on a page
but it doesn't actually look like it is in
[308]
a box.
[310]
Now the shapes option is really, really sad.
[312]
We're going to have a look at it but it is
very, very sad.
[316]
Here's our shape.
[317]
I'm going to type my text in it.
[318]
Well, for a start when I start typing my text
it doesn't actually go in there.
[322]
I have to right click and choose Add Text.
[327]
I can rotate the shape but unfortunately the
text doesn't rotate with it.
[332]
It just gets left behind.
[334]
So this is just really, really tragic.
[337]
It's obviously not an option that you would
even consider using.
[340]
So that's shapes in Word 2007.
[344]
It's also in Word 2003.
[347]
So write off shapes.
[348]
They're simply not going to do it for you.
[350]
We go back now to WordArt which unfortunately
looked really, really horrible in earlier
[356]
versions of Word but it is a really good way
of rotating text.
[361]
The trick with this is that you really want
to make sure that you select a good font.
[366]
So let's go and see if one of my favorites
Myriad Pro is here, which it is.
[371]
So I've got now my font, Rotate is done in
Myriad Pro.
[376]
I don't have a color yet but I can get that
in a minute.
[380]
Here is my WordArt object.
[381]
It's stuck actually behind the shape so let's
just go and get it.
[385]
And now I can do things with this text.
[388]
Firstly I'm going to have to change the text
wrapping because by default it is In Line
[392]
with Text but if I choose Square or in fact
anything else it will now rotate.
[398]
And unlike any other rotation option that
we have this one will rotate anyway we want
[404]
it.
[405]
So really WordArt is your best option if you
want rotated text in versions of Word that
[411]
are earlier than Word 2010 because the graphics
engine in 2007 wasn't changed unfortunately.
[421]
Now you do get some options here.
[422]
You can choose your shape fill.
[424]
Now the shape fill of the shape here is actually
the text letters.
[429]
It's not the box that it's in because you
don't actually have a box behind this WordArt.
[435]
But you can choose Outline, Text.
[438]
You can change the text itself.
[440]
You can edit the text.
[443]
You can get some good effects if you're just
really careful with it and you just try and
[448]
get something that doesn't look too WordArt
like and actually looks like text.
[453]
If you want a color behind it then you'll
need to put a shape behind it.
[457]
So let's just go and get a round edge shape
and let's actually rotate the shape.
[466]
So say we wanted to have our text in a box
like this then I would put my textbox in a
[474]
WordArt shape and then I would create a shape
for it to go over.
[479]
I would rotate these two to the same rotation
and place the text on top of the shape.
[485]
Now it's gone underneath the shape.
[487]
All we need to do is to right click one of
them, well I've managed to get the shape here,
[492]
and change its order and send it to the back.
[494]
So now we have a piece of text in a box rotated
inside Word 2007 and we've done that with
[503]
a WordArt object and a shape placed behind
it.
[507]
So you really need to be a bit creative in
Word 2007 and Word 2003 for getting rotated
[513]
text.
[514]
A textbox is an option if you're happy with
one of the three text rotation features that
[520]
it offers.
[521]
Otherwise WordArt and then if you need to
place it in a filled shape then just put a
[527]
shape behind it.
[529]
Obviously things change a lot with Word 2013
and Word 2010 and we get all these rotation
[536]
options that we did not have in earlier versions.
