Wedding insurance what is it and do you need it - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
with everything happening with covin 19a
[3]
ka the corona virus you probably have
[5]
heard a little bit about wedding
[6]
insurance but what exactly is it and
[8]
what does it cover so we're talking
[10]
about today hey guys welcome back to my
[22]
youtube channel hitched Academy my name
[25]
is Kimberley Rhodes and I'm a
[26]
professional wedding planner and today
[27]
we are talking about wedding insurance I
[30]
will tell you prior to this whole
[32]
coronavirus situation I would say that
[34]
probably 20% of my clients actually
[37]
chose to get wedding insurance it's
[39]
something we tell all of our clients
[40]
about but then they have to make the
[42]
decision for them on whether or not they
[44]
want it I will say now wedding insurance
[46]
seems even more important but it also is
[49]
probably even harder to get so there's
[52]
that so what is wedding insurance
[55]
first of all just like any insurance
[57]
policy like you would have for your car
[59]
or for your home or renters insurance it
[61]
basically is a policy that will pay you
[63]
back money when something goes wrong you
[66]
get in a car accident your insurance
[68]
policy pays to get your car fixed
[70]
you have renters insurance and there's a
[72]
flood renters insurance pays for your
[75]
belongings and to get things fixed
[77]
wedding insurance is the same saying
[80]
however there are some things it does
[82]
and doesn't cover I will tell you with
[85]
this whole coronavirus situation and we
[87]
have two clients that we've been the
[89]
most concerned about with spring
[90]
weddings both of them have insurance
[92]
policies thank goodness and both of them
[94]
are very different from each other so
[97]
all wedding insurance policies are not
[99]
created equal you'll have to be very
[101]
specific about what kind of coverage
[103]
you're looking for and how those
[105]
policies pay out so I will say read the
[109]
fine print I am NOT an attorney I'm not
[111]
an insurance expert but I do know most
[113]
specifically from calls I've made to two
[115]
different insurance companies in the
[117]
last week that every policy is a little
[119]
bit different so you have to be very
[120]
specific as you're looking at it and
[122]
citing what coverage you want I'm gonna
[124]
go through today some of the things that
[126]
insurance can cover and what it's for
[130]
and why you might need it and then you
[132]
can decide what works for you now
[134]
wedding insurance has a lot of different
[136]
policies but one of them that I think is
[138]
honestly a great reason to use it is for
[142]
vendor situations so let's say for
[144]
example you hire a caterer nine months
[147]
before your wedding or six months before
[148]
your wedding even three months before
[149]
your wedding and you've paid them a big
[152]
deposit even fifty percent or maybe
[155]
seventy five percent maybe you've paid
[156]
them in full and that company goes out
[158]
of business and files bankruptcy before
[160]
your wedding you could be screwed
[163]
however wedding insurance policies
[165]
really help recoup some of those costs
[168]
to something unexpected like that I mean
[171]
we hate for it to happen but I've seen
[173]
over the years florists shut their doors
[175]
cake Baker's shutting their doors venues
[178]
closing unexpectedly caterers closing
[181]
unexpectedly and chances are they have
[184]
clients who have paid them money in
[186]
advance for their event and they're not
[188]
able to fulfill those contracts wedding
[191]
insurance is one of the things that can
[193]
help you get some of that money back so
[195]
that you can move on without being
[196]
completely in the hole another reason
[198]
wedding insurance can be good is for
[200]
liability reasons so for example you've
[203]
signed a contract with your venue and as
[206]
part of that there's probably something
[207]
in there about the image that any damage
[209]
to than you is the responsibility of the
[211]
person who signed the contract I've
[213]
actually had an event where the drunk
[216]
groomsman went into the bathroom and
[219]
pulled out the stalls from the wall who
[224]
does that who does that anyway it was a
[228]
historic venue so it wasn't just you
[230]
know a couple hundred dollars to fix it
[232]
was a couple thousand dollars to fix and
[234]
it is the responsibility of the person
[237]
who signed the contract for the venue to
[240]
cover those costs wedding insurance can
[242]
protect you for any damage to the venue
[245]
caused by one of your guests and
[247]
there's just you know a way to help
[249]
recover some of those costs if something
[252]
unfortunate like that were to happen we
[253]
obviously don't see it often but heaven
[256]
forbid you're the one situation where a
[259]
guest breaks something and it has to be
[262]
repaired down some wedding insurance
[264]
policies include an alcohol component so
[268]
let's just say you're serving alcohol
[269]
err event and someone gets into a car
[272]
accident and they want to sue you
[274]
because they think it's your
[276]
responsibility that they were
[277]
over-served granted these situations are
[280]
very unlikely but the only way to
[283]
protect yourself is with some sort of
[285]
insurance policy so there are again some
[288]
insurance policies that have an alcohol
[290]
component protecting you as the event
[292]
host of any situations related to
[295]
alcohol consumption and someone being
[296]
over-served some wedding insurance
[299]
policies will also cover accident or
[302]
injury so if one of your guests gets
[305]
injured at your event if they slip and
[307]
fall on the dance floor and are hurt and
[310]
have medical bills and end up wanting to
[312]
sue you for said medical bills a wedding
[314]
insurance policy can help cover you in
[316]
some of those cases or provide some
[318]
reimbursement in those situations
[320]
now some wedding insurance policies will
[323]
cover you or pay you back if your event
[326]
has to be postponed or canceled and
[329]
typically the reasons for the
[331]
postponement in the cancellations can
[333]
vary on how much they are covered so for
[335]
example you might have a weather portion
[339]
of your policy so if weather is bad or
[341]
if it has to be canceled
[342]
you could be covered or not you really
[345]
have to read the fine print
[346]
also pandemics like corona virus we have
[350]
found very recently that many insurance
[352]
policies do not cover pandemics so if it
[355]
is a national emergency because of a
[359]
pandemic and a virus going around some
[361]
policies do not cover that so again you
[364]
have to really do your research I am NOT
[366]
an insurance expert by any means I am
[369]
NOT an attorney so you really do have to
[371]
read what those policies cover I have
[373]
one client right now
[374]
who
[374]
as a great wedding insurance policy and
[377]
it does include a cancellation and
[379]
postponement clause and the way it is
[382]
written in talking with their insurance
[383]
company very recently it is basically if
[386]
the event has to be cancelled because
[389]
let's say it's a pandemic but the venue
[391]
won't allow it or a city or state
[394]
government ordinance won't allow the
[396]
event to take place their insurance
[398]
policy goes into effect however if the
[401]
client chooses to cancel or postpone
[404]
their event yet the city the venue
[407]
everything else is saying it can still
[409]
go on then their insurance policy does
[411]
not cover them all of that to say
[414]
wedding insurance policies are very
[417]
individual and very different from
[419]
company to company and what they cover
[422]
is very different so you really have to
[424]
look at what you're getting how much
[426]
you're paying and what that payout is in
[429]
most cases you decide how much coverage
[432]
you need based on the cost of your event
[435]
so if you're having a $30,000 wedding
[437]
you don't need $100,000 in coverage in
[440]
case of an event cancellation however
[442]
you might want a higher payback for
[445]
liability if someone were to slip and
[447]
fall or someone were to damage the venue
[449]
and also depending on where you are what
[452]
venue you're at you might be required to
[455]
have a liability policy so one of our
[459]
events is at a museum and as such they
[461]
require a wedding insurance policy or
[464]
special event policy in order to make
[467]
sure that their artwork their sculptures
[469]
etc are covered I will say all of these
[472]
things the chances of these things
[474]
happening are fairly slim but it really
[477]
comes down to being completely covered
[480]
or taking on that risk on your own
[483]
so unlike car insurance or homeowners
[485]
insurance things that are required by
[488]
maybe your mortgage company or even by
[490]
the state or the country these insurance
[493]
policies for weddings are completely
[495]
optional completely voluntary
[499]
at one point I used to say to my clients
[500]
it really kind of depends on how
[502]
risk-averse you are in today's climate I
[505]
feel a little bit differently about that
[507]
however I know wedding insurance
[509]
policies are also going to be more
[511]
difficult and more expensive to come by
[513]
with everything that's happening with
[514]
coronavirus and events being canceled so
[517]
keep that in mind you'll definitely have
[518]
to do your own research to figure out
[520]
what works best for you how much those
[522]
policies are and how much that they will
[524]
actually cover now if you're interested
[526]
in wedding insurance and think it might
[527]
be for you I would highly recommend you
[529]
to some research there are lots of
[532]
companies that do wedding insurance and
[534]
a Google search makes it a little bit
[535]
hard to tell who's legit from who is it
[538]
but there are lots of companies who
[540]
offer it and if you can't find it under
[542]
wedding insurance special event
[543]
insurance is also one of the
[545]
terminologies that's used I would highly
[548]
recommend going to your own insurance
[550]
company that you use for other things
[551]
for example your car insurance or your
[553]
homeowners insurance or renters
[554]
insurance
[555]
those companies often have special event
[558]
insurance policies that they can add on
[560]
and you might see some savings if you're
[562]
already a customer one of our clients
[565]
who has honestly the best insurance
[567]
policy that I've seen for a wedding is
[569]
using her own insurance company and very
[573]
reputable company that she's worked with
[575]
before and they've added on a special
[578]
event insurance policy for her I will
[581]
tell you in making phone calls this week
[583]
for my clients who may be affected by
[585]
the corona virus I've found two things
[587]
one the phone calls has led me to
[591]
recordings that say we're experiencing
[593]
higher than normal call volume
[594]
expectedly and secondly one of the
[597]
insurance companies who has the best
[599]
policy that I've seen their voicemail
[601]
literally says they are no longer
[603]
offering wedding or special event
[605]
insurance and I know it's because of
[607]
everything that's happening the world
[608]
right now I'm sure that they are paying
[610]
out a lot more than they expected and
[613]
because of that are putting a little
[615]
hold on doing policies going forward all
[618]
that to say it might be a little bit
[620]
challenging to find a good policy but
[623]
you really should do the research on it
[624]
in the past
[626]
meaning pre coronavirus
[628]
my clients were able to get policies for
[629]
just a couple hundred dollars or a few
[631]
hundred dollars which offered a lot of
[633]
coverage now I'm sure those prices are
[636]
going to skyrocket but it is worth
[638]
looking into just for the peace of mind
[640]
now if you found any of this information
