i asked aaron boone about your cutter in
[2]
there and he said it's like it was like
[3]
steve carlton's slider just how would
[5]
you describe that pitch for you today uh
[7]
yeah it was on today uh i was able to
[9]
locate her to both parts of play uh got
[11]
some you know funny swings uh soft
[14]
contact and i think that's what helped
[16]
me you know get through the
[18]
day today he said he felt like early on
[19]
he knew that you had that no hit stuff
[21]
was there a point in time during this
[23]
game that you thought you know what i
[25]
think i might have the stuff um
[27]
i felt like like early on i was
[29]
attacking the zone real well um
[31]
you know i feel like you never know
[33]
how long you can go without giving a up
[35]
a hit um
[36]
you know after the fifth inning it felt
[37]
kind of special and and you know i was
[39]
just trying to
[40]
to maintain it when does it dawn on you
[42]
that you had not allowed a hit yet what
[44]
point time the game fifth inning sixteen
[46]
uh kind of like fifth going into the six
[48]
uh i kept
[49]
looking at the scoreboard uh i see where
[51]
my pitch count was and stuff like that
[53]
so
[53]
i knew i was in a good spot and and you
[55]
know noticed that i hadn't get up ahead
[57]
so
[59]
you know it was special what were the
[60]
emotions like in that seventh as they
[62]
made you work a little bit
[63]
yeah i gave up two walks and and you
[66]
know i was just hoping for for grandpa
[67]
to play and we almost got it um you know
[70]
and i was i was lucky enough to get out
[71]
of that inning
[72]
now so your career high number of
[74]
pitches i think was 103 going into today
[76]
how long could you have kept going if
[78]
your pitch count kept going up and you
[80]
were still working in there um honestly
[81]
i felt pretty good going through back
[84]
out for the eighth
[85]
i thought i threw like seven pitches six
[87]
for strikes i want to say um body felt
[90]
good obviously when you know when the
[91]
the emotions and the adrenaline is
[93]
rushing uh everything feels great but
[94]
now i feel like i got hit by a truck
[97]
i realized that they hadn't scored any
[100]
runs
[101]
uh
[101]
you know i
[102]
obviously going like i said fifth and
[104]
sixth inning i i you know i i didn't
[106]
give up so i knew there were they i
[108]
didn't give up a run so
[109]
um what about your team i mean oh
[112]
ours um
[114]
you know i think about that no at all um
[118]
you know my goal is always to keep my
[119]
team in the game um and as far and as
[121]
long as i can do it um and honestly i
[124]
don't i don't concentrate on their other
[125]
part because i know it's very hard and
[127]
and you know if if they're battling and
[129]
we're battling i will we'll come out
[131]
with a positive with a positive uh
[134]
outcome let's see if paul falls in
[136]
uh for the hit what's going through your
[138]
head as it falls uh i thought i i made a
[140]
good pitch uh you know he filed off a
[143]
couple good pitches um away and you know
[146]
i thought i i i was able to take my shot
[148]
in
[149]
uh being one two count uh you know i
[152]
probably could have made a better pitch
[153]
but uh jam shot you can't do anything
[155]
about that did aaron tell you that once
[157]
you gave up the hit that'd be it or did
[158]
you were you kind of like crossing your
[159]
fingers you might stay in
[161]
uh i i knew i knew my pitch count was
[163]
over 100 uh you know it was
[166]
over i'm at a time where i didn't have
[167]
to hit and i knew i was coming out so
[169]
you guys what was it about the cutter
[171]
that felt different today when do you
[173]
start to feel that uh is it in the
[175]
bullpen or do you have to take that in
[176]
the game uh it was more like in the game
[178]
feel for me uh i thought in the bullpen
[180]
i threw well but you know i you never
[182]
know how good it's going to be until you
[183]
actually face hitters and once they
[185]
started you know uh having soft contact
[187]
and and getting swings and misses i knew
[189]
it was it was going to be special to her
[190]
looking back at all the years it took
[192]
you to get to this point do you think
[194]
there are any one or two turning points
[196]
that got you to where you are today
[199]
uh
[200]
you know for for the past three the the
[202]
the three years 18 19 and 20 uh were
[205]
pretty rough on me um and after 20 you
[208]
know i i discovered some stuff on my
[210]
pitches and and you know i knew what i
[211]
had to be and what i had to do to to to
[213]
maintain that level and you know last
[215]
year it you know i broke out with it and
[217]
i'm going to run with it what did you
[219]
discover uh just a fastball and and
[221]
cutter uh those those have been the two
[223]
weapons for me and i feel like the
[225]
location has been big and and obviously
[227]
the the the bump in the velo has has
[229]
helped me out too you've gotten pretty
[230]
close and if you notice no haters in the
[232]
miners right seven because it's seven
[233]
and a third both of those times too
[235]
uh yeah yeah it was in syracuse i
[237]
remember 19 before i got called up
[240]
what's that feeling like i'm getting
[241]
that close to a few different types yeah
[242]
i mean it's it's something that i feel
[244]
like a pitcher as a pitcher you you want
[246]
to do that but at the end of the day
[249]
it's very hard to do obviously and
[251]
you know
[252]
i feel like when you're in that point of
[253]
the game you give your
[255]
your team a shot to win and that's the
[256]
most important thing how much confidence
[258]
is this kind of start to the season and
[260]
the carry over from last year giving you
[262]
going into
[263]
going forward yeah i mean uh
[266]
i feel like i belong uh if it feels good
[268]
to to go out there every five days as a
[270]
starter um
[272]
you know but coming into the year i i
[274]
was going to accept any role and and i
[276]
was just happy to be here and i'm going
[277]
to continue
[278]
to do that
[280]
he thinks you're such a great competitor
[282]
because it's been quite a tough road was
[285]
there any point in which you were maybe
[287]
wavering about continuing and going on
[289]
and
[290]
or did you feel
[291]
like you were going to make it at some
[293]
point how do you feel now i mean do you
[294]
pinch yourself and say say i mean right
[296]
now you're one of the better pitchers in
[298]
the league you know from where you came
[300]
that's quite a step
[302]
yeah i i've always told myself you know
[303]
i've been playing baseball since i was
[304]
four
[305]
um
[306]
i feel like that's the only thing i
[307]
ought to do uh i came out of high school
[309]
i don't have anything to to to fall back
[311]
on so i was gonna you know write this as
[312]
long as i could um
[314]
and you know
[315]
thankfully it started clicking last year
[317]
and hopefully i can continue to do it
