all right very important update so聽 starting january 1st 2022 if you sell聽聽
[5]
anything whether it's offline or online and you聽 are receiving payments totaling more than 600聽聽
[12]
through your cash app your vimo your paypal apple聽 pay or even your zelle account then you're likely聽聽
[19]
gonna have to pay some taxes on it because in the聽 hundreds of pages of the american rescue plan act聽聽
[25]
there was a tax provision that lowered the聽 federal threshold for issuing the 1099 k form聽聽
[32]
to 600 which basically means that whether you聽 are occasionally selling something that you own聽聽
[39]
or you're actually operating a business if you聽 sold more than 600 worth of goods or services聽聽
[46]
then the irs wants to see you at tax time so聽 in this brief episode i'm going to give you聽聽
[52]
all the details and let you in on how the聽 irs will know about any of these payments聽聽
[58]
that happen on these third-party apps so be聽 sure to like this video while the intro plays
[74]
hey there and welcome to our channel i'm sean with聽 life accounting the accounting company that saves聽聽
[79]
people from high taxes and low profits okay let's聽 go ahead and answer a few questions number one聽聽
[86]
what did the american rescue plan act change as聽 it relates to income reporting so currently and聽聽
[93]
this is for the 2020 and 2021 tax year the聽 rule is that if you sell goods or services聽聽
[99]
through an app like paypal then you generally will聽 only receive a tax form the 1099k form if you have聽聽
[106]
at least 200 transactions totaling more than 20聽 thousand dollars which makes it pretty obvious聽聽
[114]
that you are actually doing legitimate business at聽 that rate but as i mentioned earlier things have聽聽
[120]
changed and for the 2022 tax year you may聽 receive a 1099 k form on anything you sell over聽聽
[128]
six hundred dollars with no minimum transaction聽 levels which is a pretty significant change in an聽聽
[136]
increase of nineteen thousand and four hundred聽 dollars which is a big big move right now i聽聽
[142]
want to hear from you comment below what you think聽 about this and while you're at it don't forget to聽聽
[147]
like this video if you enjoy updates like this one聽 now here's my take lately when new laws pass that聽聽
[154]
headlines that we see on the news are typically聽 around stimulus checks tax credits like the child聽聽
[161]
tax credits and grants loans etc but the聽 government is primarily funded by tax dollars聽聽
[169]
and when all these new enhanced benefits come into聽 play then really we are the ones that are paying聽聽
[176]
for it and it's moves like this one lowering the聽 federal thresholds that help the government cover聽聽
[182]
all the bills now of course this isn't a political聽 video but i know the biden administration focused聽聽
[187]
on taxing the rich but this is definitely a tax聽 provision that is targeted at everyone okay so聽聽
[195]
question number two does this mean your taxes will聽 increase well if you get a 1099k form you should聽聽
[203]
definitely report it on your taxes but that does聽 not mean you're going to actually pay more taxes聽聽
[210]
on that income remember paying taxes comes down聽 to your total taxable income so you have to take聽聽
[217]
a look at what tax bracket you fall into after聽 the standard or itemized deductions that you have聽聽
[224]
for example if you're single and your only source聽 of income was a side hustle or some type of side聽聽
[229]
business that made let's say 10 000 then you聽 wouldn't have to pay any taxes on that because聽聽
[235]
you don't fall into a tax bracket after you take聽 the standard deduction and the math on that is聽聽
[241]
actually very simple you have ten thousand dollar聽 income minus a twelve thousand five hundred and聽聽
[246]
fifty dollar standard deduction which makes a zero聽 taxable income all right question number three how聽聽
[253]
does the irs know about your cash app or even your聽 cash transactions so i already sent this update to聽聽
[261]
a few people and the first question i got was how聽 does the irs know what's in my cash up and how do聽聽
[269]
they know that it's actually income and it's not聽 like a donation or a gift that i gave someone聽聽
[275]
so i want to let you in on two ways the irs can聽 find out that what you have is actually income聽聽
[282]
of course the first way number one is pretty聽 obvious right is through that 1099k form that form聽聽
[288]
is sent to you and to the irs so they will have聽 record of any income that you receive through that聽聽
[295]
1099k the second way is not so obvious okay so let聽 me explain your income is someone else's deduction聽聽
[304]
right just like your deduction is usually someone聽 else's income so let's break this down a little聽聽
[310]
bit more so for example if you receive a payment聽 in the form of cash you may be thinking there is聽聽
[317]
no way the irs can actually track that but if the聽 person you paid is trying to reduce their taxable聽聽
[325]
income then they will likely and they should write聽 off the money that they pay you which gives the聽聽
[332]
irs something to track right like this person聽 took a deduction that deduction is your income聽聽
[338]
or your income is someone else's deduction so of聽 course you never want to be investigated for tax聽聽
[344]
evasion and end up going to jail over illegal tax聽 strategies now we have some videos coming up next聽聽
[351]
that talks a little bit more about tax evasion聽 tax avoidance and other things the irs wants to聽聽
[357]
take control over so make sure you check out those聽 videos coming up next and i'll see you over there
