'Step up and step down': Advocates call for more change after Hockey Canada board Chair resigns - YouTube

Channel: CTV News

[0]
we begin with breaking news hockey
[1]
canada says michael bryndemur is
[4]
stepping down as chair of its board of
[6]
directors effective immediately a
[8]
statement from brenda moore reads in
[9]
part immediate action is essential to
[12]
address the important challenges facing
[14]
our organization and our sport which our
[16]
action plan works to accomplish i would
[19]
not be able to see this renewal through
[21]
and have therefore announced my
[23]
resignation to the board of directors
[25]
bryndemur says he's confident
[26]
recommendations from the independent
[28]
review will lead to a future of desired
[31]
change the hockey canada board of
[33]
directors and members will meet in the
[35]
coming days to determine next steps and
[37]
to appoint an interim chair
[40]
the resignation follows growing calls
[42]
for change at the top of the
[43]
organization after hearings in ottawa
[45]
over revelations that members of the
[47]
2018 world junior team were accused of a
[50]
group sexual assault and that hockey
[52]
canada reached a settlement with a
[53]
complainant another allegation of group
[56]
sexual assault involving the 2003 world
[58]
junior team surfaced last month
[61]
joining us now for more from sudbury
[62]
ontario is the co-director of the
[64]
national research network for gender
[66]
equity and sport and pegoraro and thank
[70]
you so much for joining us today well
[72]
thanks for having me on so ann what was
[74]
your reaction when you heard the news
[75]
this morning about michael brendamore's
[78]
resignation
[79]
i think it was uh it was time to see
[81]
some movement there's been calls for
[83]
resignations both from board members but
[85]
also from key leadership positions in
[87]
hockey canada and this is the first one
[89]
we've seen step aside so i think we need
[92]
to be watching what hockey canada's
[94]
board does next in terms of who are they
[95]
going to appoint as that interim chair
[98]
and who would you like to see in that
[100]
position what kind of person
[103]
i'd like to see someone who comes from
[105]
um a different background and isn't
[108]
maybe as steeped in the game in the
[109]
culture of hockey
[110]
hockey canada recently made some efforts
[112]
to diversify their board and added two
[114]
women and one individual from
[117]
a culturally diverse background and i
[119]
prefer to see one of those three new
[121]
members who
[122]
have a different appoint of view on the
[125]
on hockey and on our game to be the
[127]
chair
[128]
talk to us a little bit more about the
[130]
culture shift that needs to happen at
[131]
hockey canada from your view from your
[133]
perspective
[135]
well you know we've got an organization
[136]
that's in charge of of arguably you know
[139]
everyone's favorite and national pastime
[141]
and the best game in our our country for
[143]
a lot of people but we've we've not seen
[145]
a lot of change we've seen you know
[148]
the people are in leadership have been
[149]
there for decades and they've enabled
[150]
this culture and also been a part of the
[153]
decisions that we're now seeing as we
[155]
peel back the layers that have been made
[157]
around protecting
[159]
the organization protecting athletes who
[161]
uh you know commit sexual assault so i
[163]
think we need to see some whole scale
[164]
change the board needs to be fully
[167]
renewed in my opinion and i think key
[169]
leadership positions inside that
[171]
organization need to change we saw the
[173]
poll recently put out by ctv news it
[175]
shows how angry canadians are and how
[178]
they are not confident in this
[179]
leadership right and on that note anne
[182]
given the anger that we're seeing
[183]
nationally how can hockey canada rebuild
[186]
trust amongst canadians
[189]
well i think a couple of steps i mean
[190]
you know we look at the the data from
[192]
from the survey done it looks like you
[193]
know overall people are angry but women
[195]
are angrier than than any other group
[197]
and so i think appointing a woman as a
[200]
chair to show leadership that uh that
[203]
can convince perhaps women across the
[205]
country that it's got in better hands
[207]
would be a first step i think changing
[209]
some of the leadership positions going
[210]
to be key but i also think committing to
[213]
more openness and transparency they
[215]
haven't committed to transparency in
[217]
this third party review that it's going
[218]
to be public and we're all going to see
[220]
what they say so we need more uh
[222]
transparency and we need them to step up
[224]
and step down and just finally here and
[226]
the women's national hockey team has
[228]
voiced concerns over what the federal
[230]
funding fees for hockey canada will mean
[232]
for them are you surprised there hasn't
[233]
been more clarity on whether funding for
[236]
the women's teams will continue
[239]
yeah i think that we've seen both the
[241]
women's team and the para team being
[242]
caught up in what's happening with the
[243]
men's hockey side of the business and
[246]
and i think as as canadians we should be
[248]
concerned uh the women's team is is
[250]
arguably one of our most successful
[252]
teams some of the highest performing
[253]
athletes and both them and the para
[255]
athletes depend on the canadian uh
[257]
funding support funding system for their
[259]
revenue and their and their uh because
[261]
they don't earn salaries in professional
[262]
leagues so i think they're right to be
[264]
concerned and i actually am um quite
[266]
shocked i guess that that we haven't
[268]
seen more um assertions from hockey
[270]
canada that their funding is secure and
[272]
they're going to keep being able to
[273]
pursue excellence and thank you so much
[275]
for joining us today and for sharing
[277]
your insights with us
[278]
thanks for having me on
