ESG: Benchmarking - Sifiso Ndala - Head: Global Securities Solutions - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[3]
Sifiso, great to be in
[4]
conversation with you today on
[5]
a very critical conversation
[7]
that really does speak to the
[8]
changing environment and
[9]
appetite of investment,
[11]
particularly for institutional
[12]
investors in South Africa and
[14]
the world over.
[15]
And that's the growing interest
[16]
that we see in ESG
[18]
- environmental, social as well
[19]
as governance issues.
[20]
And that really does speak to
[22]
the kind of interactions and
[23]
engagements you must have with
[24]
clients as you speak to them on
[26]
a day to day basis.
[27]
But what do you witness in
[28]
terms of client appetite,
[30]
opportunities and perhaps maybe
[31]
even pain points that they
[33]
identify when it comes to
[34]
prioritising ESG in their
[36]
investment strategies?
[38]
Well, when it comes to ESG,
[40]
you get lots of uses of ESG data,
[43]
but you also get lots
[44]
of users of ESG data.
[47]
So depending on what type of
[49]
user you are, you'll have a
[50]
different usage for
[52]
ESG type reporting.
[54]
So if I think about asset
[55]
managers as an example,
[57]
they would use ESG data to
[60]
integrate the data into their
[62]
normal investment process.
[64]
They would want to monitor the
[66]
investment profiles or even
[68]
create their own
[69]
sustainability products.
[72]
But I think what's great about
[73]
the ESG data is that these guys
[75]
can also engage with their
[77]
multiple stakeholders when
[79]
reviewing their portfolios.
[82]
So they can use ESG in
[85]
monitoring their scoring when
[86]
they speak to their clients.
[89]
Asset owners, then,
[90]
as an example, can monitor the
[92]
asset users or the
[94]
asset managers in,
[96]
if they're acting in,
[97]
the capacity of a trustee,
[99]
then they can engage them
[100]
around their portfolios and
[102]
where the ESG scoring is.
[104]
So depending on the type of
[105]
user you are, you will have
[107]
different usage for ESG data.
[109]
Maybe I think it's important
[110]
also to note that this is an
[112]
exceptionally complex world.
[115]
There are multiple data
[116]
providers of ESG, and all of
[119]
those have got their own matrix
[121]
and their own frameworks and
[122]
their own standards.
[124]
And so it can be quite
[125]
frustrating for clients,
[128]
institutional clients
[130]
that we have.
[131]
So then they would have
[132]
challenges of understanding
[135]
this data, of making sure that
[138]
the data is of good quality,
[140]
but like anybody else we talk to,
[142]
this data is quite
[143]
expensive as well.
[145]
So having this data and
[148]
purchasing this data can be
[149]
quite a challenge.
[150]
So these are multiple
[152]
challenges that our
[154]
clients might have.
[155]
I'm glad you highlight that,
[156]
and we'll touch on the data in
[157]
just a moment just to
[158]
understand how easily it can be
[159]
accessed now through solutions
[160]
that RMB specifically have
[162]
brought to the table.
[163]
But I want us to focus on
[164]
those complexities, right?
[165]
And you talk about the fact
[166]
that the data is not measured
[167]
in the same way, not collated
[169]
in the same way.
[170]
And when you're approaching
[171]
business across the continent
[172]
like the one that we're on, in Africa,
[174]
that also comes with its own
[176]
nuances and challenges.
[177]
Are we finding that there's
[178]
some pain points to manage
[180]
there as well, when it comes
[181]
to accessing, analysing and
[183]
understanding data specific to
[185]
African investment opportunities?
[187]
So, particularly in our continent,
[190]
you know, in the African continent,
[191]
the quality of data can be
[193]
a bit challenging.
[194]
So for our clients to understand,
[197]
this can be a bit of a challenge
[200]
for them because there's all of these
[202]
multiple providers with the
[204]
complexities that I was
[206]
mentioning right now.
[207]
And for our local or African
[211]
institutional clients, accessing this
[214]
data can be a bit of a challenge.
[215]
But also understanding the
[216]
quality behind the data and how
[218]
to consolidate all of this can
[220]
be quite a bit of a
[221]
challenge for them.
[223]
Let's talk about that because
[224]
as you say, it's about access
[225]
to the data first and then
[226]
understanding how
[227]
it's collated.
[227]
Last year in September,
[229]
RMB brought about a whole new
[230]
solution to actually alleviate
[232]
these challenges here through
[233]
your ESG sustainable investment
[236]
suite, if I'm not mistaken?
[237]
Help us unpack some of the new
[238]
platforms that have been
[239]
brought to the fore to
[240]
essentially make your clients'
[241]
lives a lot easier when it
[243]
comes to analysing data
[244]
specific to ESG investment.
[246]
Lovely.
[246]
So RMB then, like you said,
[248]
came out with two ESG products.
[253]
So it's analytical products that we
[255]
launched into the market.
[257]
The one is called ESGNow and
[259]
the other one is called ESGOne.
[262]
So what's beautiful about these
[263]
platforms is that they can
[264]
consolidate all of this data
[266]
from the multiple providers.
[268]
They can package their data in
[270]
a form of, in a way that clients
[274]
can easily understand it.
[276]
So they won't need people who
[278]
have got knowledge into this,
[279]
so they can package it.
[280]
That way you can understand the
[282]
data properly, but also be
[284]
transparent around what
[286]
actually is in the data.
[288]
So if you've got a benchmarking
[290]
of some sort and you want to
[292]
benchmark yourself against your
[293]
peers or benchmark yourself
[295]
against the market, you can log
[298]
onto our platform and you can
[301]
see exactly where you're
[302]
benchmarked in relation
[304]
to the others.
[305]
You can go into the E.
[307]
So the environmental factors,
[309]
and you can spot the actual
[312]
assets that you are holding
[313]
that are making your
[315]
environmental factors to be
[317]
either high or low, so you can
[319]
go into that detail.
[321]
You can go into the social,
[322]
into the social aspects
[323]
of your portfolio.
[325]
You can double click on that,
[327]
and they show you on this
[328]
platform, you can see that
[329]
you've got stock A, B and C
[331]
that is giving you a high
[332]
scoring, because from a social
[334]
perspective they're doing great.
[336]
But also delve deeper into that
[338]
and see those scores that
[339]
maybe are not giving you
[340]
such a great scoring.
[342]
So I mean, clients then
[344]
definitely can access this.
[346]
But the beauty of it is that,
[348]
like I said earlier on,
[348]
data is quite expensive.
[350]
So we have packaged this,
[352]
made it simple,
[353]
made it understandable,
[355]
checked the quality, but made
[356]
it affordable as well.
[358]
And that's quite important.
[359]
And I am already intrigued to
[360]
understand the take up that
[361]
clients have had towards this
[363]
and how they've
[364]
received this information.
[365]
But I'm also keen for clients
[366]
who might be sitting on the
[367]
opposite end and thinking
[368]
goodness this is a great solution,
[370]
but how does it give me
[371]
a competitive edge?
[372]
And I guess help them stay on
[375]
track and in tune with the
[376]
investment criteria and
[377]
objectives that they're
[378]
hoping to achieve.
[380]
So clients in Africa can never
[383]
fall behind of the investment,
[384]
international investment community.
[387]
Investment, people who want to
[390]
invest in our continent,
[391]
take into account ESG aspects
[395]
when they want to invest,
[396]
because they're required to do so.
[398]
So we can never fall behind.
[400]
So you need, you therefore need
[402]
a solution like this for you to
[404]
be able to engage with
[405]
your investors, engage with
[406]
your stakeholders and be able
[408]
to have a meaningful
[409]
conversation
[410]
around portfolios.
[411]
So if they want to come
[412]
and use you, as an asset
[414]
manager as an example, you can
[417]
produce data that
[418]
they can understand,
[419]
that everyone can understand.
[421]
You have providers that are
[423]
internationally recognised,
[425]
that are sourcing this platform.
[428]
So you've been speaking
[429]
basically a good language that
[431]
they can understand.
[432]
So if you have this -
[434]
definitely gives you
[435]
competitive advantage
[437]
against your peers.
[438]
Certainly.
[438]
Globally competitive,
[439]
locally relevant in terms of
[441]
the data that you're attaining
[442]
and of course, making sure that
[443]
you're keeping in line with
[444]
these international trends in
[446]
terms of investment.
[447]
And affordable.
[448]
And affordable.
[449]
That's an important
[450]
one to remember.
[451]
Sifiso thank you so much
[452]
for your time.
[452]
Really appreciate the insights
[453]
you shared with us.
[454]
Thank you so much.
[455]
Thank you.
