Dying Fat: Your Funeral Options - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
hello ducklings a question I get all the
[2]
time and a question that is not
[4]
discussed nearly enough is if I am a fat
[7]
or very fat person what will happen to
[10]
my body when I die what are my options
[12]
for cremation or burial by the way if
[18]
you have arrived on this here video to
[20]
say some hateful stuff that's not what
[23]
we're doing today I'm stretching out my
[25]
comment blocking finger in 1 min 2 min 3
[28]
& 4
[36]
there's a lot of fear that I hear from
[39]
fat people who by the way tell me they
[41]
prefer I use the term fat so that's what
[44]
I'll use the fear is that when they die
[46]
their body will be treated poorly author
[49]
and activist Maryanne Kirby said I don't
[51]
actually have high hopes for my corpse
[54]
being treated with respect the fat
[56]
corpse has been the hinge of too many
[58]
jokes we also talked to join Nash star
[61]
of Diet land who said people act like
[63]
there won't be a place for fat people
[65]
when we die too fats at cremate to fats
[68]
and bury are we just too fat to be dead
[71]
or that you're gonna dump us out on the
[73]
sidewalk first it's important to know
[75]
that any dead body can be accommodated
[77]
no matter the size or shape there is a
[80]
way to give you a burial or cremation
[82]
that being said the funeral industry
[84]
does have some catching up to do options
[87]
for morbidly obese people as the medical
[90]
industry would term them are often
[92]
limited and more expensive so what are
[95]
the realities of how the funeral
[97]
industry handles a very fat body let's
[99]
start with caskets yes there are
[101]
specialized caskets that can accommodate
[104]
larger and taller bodies for those
[106]
weighing 300 pounds or about 22 stone
[109]
and above an oversized casket might be
[112]
required over what size you're asking
[115]
unclear these are just the industry
[117]
terms and I want you to have that
[119]
vocabulary so a standard casket is about
[122]
24 to 27 inches wide where certain
[125]
oversized casket makers can make caskets
[127]
as wide as 52 inches accommodating a
[130]
person who is well over 500 pounds even
[133]
up to a thousand pounds
[134]
and while oversized caskets aren't the
[137]
norm in a casket showroom more and more
[139]
funeral homes are stocking them or
[141]
working with casket makers who make
[143]
custom caskets so that's a positive
[145]
some casket makers can make standard
[147]
sized caskets larger inside by making
[151]
the sides of the caskets thinner this is
[154]
important because a larger person can go
[156]
inside a standard casket and then still
[158]
fit in a standard cemetery plot that
[161]
brings us to the next barrier
[163]
consideration plots and volt size
[165]
standard burial plots and vaults are not
[169]
shockingly designed to fit these
[171]
standard caskets if a fat person
[174]
requires a larger casket then they
[176]
require a larger plot and unfortunately
[179]
not all conventional or traditional
[180]
cemeteries have been designed to
[183]
accommodate this a person may need to
[185]
find a spot in a cemetery where there's
[187]
extra space to expand a plot most
[190]
traditional cemeteries have these sort
[192]
of pre sized standard plots so squeezing
[195]
a bigger plot between two standard plots
[197]
isn't possible and some cemeteries will
[200]
require a person to buy two plots so the
[203]
right cemetery with the available space
[205]
is necessary to find and if you're over
[208]
400 pounds or like 29 stone you might
[211]
want to think about this as you're
[212]
creating your death plan you're also
[214]
probably wondering how much is this all
[217]
going to cost unfortunately and I'm not
[219]
saying this is great larger caskets
[222]
larger cemetery plots and post-mortem
[224]
care for very fat bodies are typically
[227]
going to cost more
[229]
it takes more people to pick up move or
[231]
arrange a very fat body casket makers
[234]
charge more for these oversized or
[235]
custom caskets a larger grave has to be
[238]
dug and if a person is embalmed often
[241]
three to four times as much embalming
[243]
fluid must be used and it takes more
[245]
time to embalm correctly so burying a
[248]
very fat body in a traditional Cemetery
[250]
can cost eight hundred to three thousand
[253]
dollars more than a standard price plan
[255]
what about cremation while not all
[258]
crematories are equipped to handle the
[260]
cremation of a very fat individual it is
[262]
absolutely possible cremating a very fat
[265]
body requires more heat for a longer
[267]
amount of time the cremation does need
[270]
to be handled carefully because if the
[272]
heat rises too quickly meaning the fat
[275]
is incinerated too quickly
[277]
black smoke could choke the machine and
[279]
because of this many crematories will
[281]
cremate larger bodies in the morning
[283]
starting when the bricks of the machine
[285]
are cold but a good Crematory person
[287]
knows how to do that another
[289]
consideration is getting the body into
[291]
the machine standard chamber doors on
[293]
retorts are usually 33 inches
[296]
but now larger machines can have doors
[298]
is why this 52 inches such machines
[301]
could in theory handle a corpse up to a
[304]
thousand pounds but be prepared that not
[306]
every Crematory has this type of machine
[308]
we're really fortunate at my funeral
[310]
home that we do work with a Crematory
[312]
that has one of these machines so it's
[314]
not an issue with our families these
[316]
bigger machines do come with a bigger
[318]
price tag because more energy and
[320]
natural gas is used for the cremation
[322]
process the vast majority of crematories
[325]
are going to charge a little more for
[327]
bodies over 300 pounds this extra cost
[330]
could range anywhere from $100 to $500
[333]
in the u.s. our funeral home usually
[336]
tries to offset that cost in other ways
[338]
for the family if they choose cremation
[340]
as for alkaline hydrolysis or aqua
[343]
Meishan no it's not readily available or
[345]
legal everywhere yet but most standard
[348]
machines can handle a human up to about
[350]
500 pounds so that's another reason to
[353]
push for alkaline hydrolysis in your
[355]
community at this point you might be
[357]
thinking gee that all sounds kind of
[360]
dire if I'm fat or if I love someone
[362]
who's fat what can I do well one of the
[365]
most important things I can emphasize is
[367]
being honest about size with your
[369]
funeral director this is an issue I've
[371]
experienced where either a loved one or
[374]
a nurse is too embarrassed to tell us
[376]
that the dead person is over 350 pounds
[379]
so when we get to the home to transport
[381]
the body we are ill-equipped we don't
[383]
have the right size cot or we don't have
[385]
enough people to move the body when
[386]
we're not properly prepared this can be
[388]
painful for the family which is the last
[390]
thing we want to do to a grieving person
[392]
I know it's not easy for everyone to
[395]
have the conversation about size or
[397]
weight especially if it's been traumatic
[398]
or difficult in the past but being
[401]
willing to talk about your loved ones
[402]
size can alleviate so much stress for
[405]
all involved when planning a funeral and
[408]
as I said consider being upfront about
[410]
being fat in your death plan while
[412]
you're still alive
[414]
our population is getting bigger
[415]
ignoring that fact is unrealistic as a
[418]
social model and a business model
[420]
funeral homes should acknowledge their
[422]
larger caskets and services it's not a
[424]
secret
[425]
both sides the family in the funeral
[427]
home need to be able
[428]
to have a respectful honest transparent
[430]
discussion about the dead person sighs
[433]
and what that's gonna mean for the
[434]
burial or cremation this idea was echoed
[437]
by author and activist Leslie Kinsel who
[439]
told us failing to address the different
[441]
needs of fat bodies has the potential to
[444]
turn the process into a traumatic one
[446]
instead of one that provides peace and
[448]
closure I think creating death plans
[450]
should be fun and cathartic in some ways
[453]
and it's a real shame if that is taken
[455]
away because there's fear of not being
[458]
respected or accommodated lastly and you
[461]
know I had to go here Green or natural
[464]
burial could be a really great option
[466]
for very fat people no coffin or casket
[469]
is required on bombing no cremation no
[471]
burial vault just a corpse and a hole in
[474]
the ground and it's lovely out there I
[477]
just I hope you learned something today
[480]
that's too old-school as the morticians
[483]
in a row they did it for you not
[485]
entertained
[486]
this video was made with generous
[488]
donations from death enthusiasts just
[491]
like you and one and two and three and
[496]
four and one
