clients and the people that I've worked with

[15]
cyberspace, make sure you tap that subscription
[18]
button and the notification bell I released two
[21]
new videos each week. Let's talk about your toxic
[23]
AF boss, shall we? If you haven't already seen it,
[26]
about a year ago, I made a signs that your
[29]
workplace is toxic video. And one of the most
[31]
consistent themes that I found coming up in the
[34]
comments was about toxic bosses. And really, in my
[37]
opinion, toxic bosses are the ultimate driver for
[39]
a toxic work environment. The rest of the company
[42]
can be absolutely awesome and incredible. But if
[45]
you have a toxic manager, it's not going to go
[48]
down well. So in today's video, I'm sharing with
[50]
you 9 signs that your boss is toxic. And they're
[53]
not only doing this to make you potentially look
[56]
bad, they're also doing this to make them look
[58]
good and probably very necessary. If you are ready
[61]
to figure out if your boss meets that criteria,
[64]
tap the like button. And let's jump into it. The
[67]
first sign that your boss is toxic is that they
[69]
skew towards micromanagement. And not just
[72]
occasionally. They're micromanaging you all the
[74]
time about all of the things. I have an entire
[77]
video on micromanagement, and sometimes
[79]
micromanagement is just because they don't really
[82]
know what they're doing. But toxic managers
[85]
actually use micromanagement as one of the ways to
[87]
let's just say it drive you crazy and they're
[90]
micromanagement isn't just annoying, it is
[92]
actually something that does get in the way of you
[95]
being able to do your job. And to do your job
[98]
effectively. Your micromanaging boss also probably
[101]
likes to send those micromanaging emails at
[103]
11:30am on a Saturday morning, and maybe even
[106]
wants to hop on a call to just walk you through
[108]
things and how they should be done. This toxic
[111]
boss behavior also coincides with the next sign of
[114]
a toxic manager. And that is being overly
[116]
critical, your manager should absolutely be giving
[119]
you constructive feedback on a regular basis. One
[122]
part of their job, after all is to help you become
[125]
better at what you do and more successful in your
[127]
career. And they can't do that without delivering
[130]
feedback. And sometimes that feedback is going to
[133]
be critical. Where the toxic manager ranges though
[136]
is all of their feedback is critical. And it's
[139]
overwhelmingly and sometimes even necessarily
[141]
critical. Let me ask you a question. When was the
[144]
last time that your boss actually acknowledged
[147]
that you did something well, and when you do do
[149]
something that is really exceptional? And you are
[152]
getting praise? and accolades? Does your boss
[155]
still find something that you did wrong with it?
[157]
Or do you find the critical feedback that they
[160]
give you really benign in actionable or really
[163]
just something that is a matter of their opinion?
[165]
Or is it something that best practices and
[168]
industry experts would actually disagree with,
[170]
these are signs that your boss is being critical
[173]
just to be critical. And there's a reason for
[176]
this, your critical boss wants to undermine your
[178]
confidence in your work on the successes that you
[181]
are actually accomplishing at your job. And they
[184]
have all of their toxic reason, which I am not
[187]
going to invest time in this video talking about.
[189]
But that constant criticism is a big red flag that
[192]
you have a toxic boss on your hands. And this
[195]
actually leads me directly into my next sign of a
[198]
toxic manager. And that is when they are
[200]
undermining you, the toxic manager, especially
[202]
through their unfair criticism will actually begin
[205]
to undermine you, they might do this privately in
[208]
your one on ones and through that unfair
[210]
criticism, but they actually may even take
[213]
additional steps and start undermining you in
[215]
front of other people, whether it's in front of
[218]
your team, in team meetings, or even in front of
[221]
customers and partners who you work with your
[223]
toxic manager is doing this as a power play. And
[226]
what ends up happening is that your toxic manager
[229]
now has an excuse to micromanage you even more,
[232]
because they have just corroded the confidence
[234]
that other people actually have in you. And in my
[237]
opinion, this is one of the most dangerous
[239]
Behaviors of a toxic manager because it can
[242]
seriously impede your ability to do your job and
[245]
for you to really thrive at what you do. The
[247]
reason for that is when they undermine you enough,
[250]
you are not going to be given the opportunities
[253]
that you need in order to grow in your career. And
[255]
one of the ways that they undermine you is
[258]
actually going to lead directly into the next sign
[261]
of a toxic manager. And of all of the signs of a
[263]
toxic manager I find this is the one that has had
[266]
the highest impact on my clients. And the people
[269]
that I've worked with the fourth sign of a toxic
[272]
manager is they refuse to acknowledge your
[274]
accomplishments. Now, I touched on this a little
[277]
bit when we talked about criticism, but a toxic
[279]
boss or toxic manager is not going to be able to
[282]
acknowledge anything that you have done well, this
[285]
not only is going to be something that can have a
[288]
very high impact on your confidence. But this is
[291]
also going to have a direct impact in your
[293]
compensation and your opportunity to advance in
[296]
your work. Because if they refuse to acknowledge
[298]
the great things that you're doing, that is going
[301]
to show up on things like your performance review,
[304]
and if you're applying for a job internally This
[307]
is even something that could actually impact you.
[310]
Plus, let's just be really honest here. Most
[312]
people, at least occasionally need a little bit of
[315]
external validation to let them know that they're
[318]
doing good things. After all, if we don't know the
[321]
things that we're doing at work that are going
[323]
really, really well that are making an actual mark
[326]
for our company, and for our team, it's going to
[329]
inhibit our ability to actually focus there and do
[332]
more of those things to amplify our awesomeness to
[334]
make a bigger impact overall. So really, this
[337]
toxic manager behavior is hurting everyone,
[339]
including your toxic boss themselves. And as if
[342]
they wouldn't be bad enough, if they just did
[345]
those things. They're not going to leave it there.
[348]
No, no, your toxic manager is going to just don't
[350]
waste the knife while they're at it. And this
[353]
brings me to my next sign of a toxic manager. And
[356]
that is they are going to create obstacles for
[358]
you, they are going to get in the way of the work
[361]
that you do. And yes, they might be using tools
[364]
like micromanagement and unfair criticism in order
[367]
to create obstacles for you. But they might be
[369]
doing other more nuanced things like refusing to
[372]
support the work that you do, or just refusing you
[375]
to give you actual opportunities to flex and grow
[378]
your skills at work. And actually drawing from my
[380]
personal experience here, and the most toxic
[383]
manager that I worked with had this phenomenal
[386]
ability of taking a task that should have taken 30
[388]
minutes and turning it into three weeks of work
[391]
and disorganization. And just chaos, your toxic
[394]
manager is going to create a lot of hoops for you
[397]
to jump through a lot of checkpoints and a lot of
[399]
really strange nine rules in order for you to
[402]
actually accomplish your goals. Now, the next sign
[405]
of a toxic manager is one that can be a little bit
[408]
more nuanced, but it's one that is very, very
[410]
dangerous. And that is that toxic bosses tend to
[413]
speak poorly about other people. Let me guarantee
[416]
just one thing for you. If you hear your manager
[418]
talking poorly about other people, especially if
[421]
they're talking poorly about your coworkers,
[424]
they're talking poorly about you to other people
[426]
as well. And if you've been hanging out with me
[429]
here on my channel for a while, you know my
[432]
opinions on gossip and exactly how useless and
[434]
toxic it is. The toxic people just can't help but
[437]
drag other people down to their level. And because
[440]
they at their core, it feels so much ugliness and
[443]
awfulness about themselves. They need to create a
[445]
reality for themselves where everyone is as awful
[448]
and incompetent and negative and miserable as they
[451]
are. And that's why they're gossiping about your
[454]
coworkers about other people in the company. And
[457]
yes, probably about you, when this is a toxic
[459]
manager behavior, this can actually become a very
[462]
easy trap for you to fall down along with them. Do
[465]
not fall into that trap. No matter what you do.
[467]
The most important thing that you can do in this
[470]
circumstance is making sure that you are giving
[473]
them an opportunity to rise up to your level
[475]
instead of stooping down to there's like the
[478]
wonderful and glorious Michelle Obama sad when
[480]
they go low, we go high. And that brings me into
[483]
one of the more extreme but also not entirely
[486]
infrequent signs of a toxic manager. Your toxic
[488]
manager may exhibit some unethical behavior and
[491]
unethical decision making you know that boss who's
[494]
telling you that it's okay for you to just act now
[497]
and ask for forgiveness later. I know that what
[500]
they're asking you to do, or what they're
[502]
encouraging you to do is bending but really
[504]
breaking all of the rules. If not the law, this
[507]
toxic manager behavior is going to bring you to
[510]
lows that you never even knew existed. If your
[512]
toxic boss is exhibiting this behavior, you need
[515]
to find a way out as quickly as possible. But I
[518]
want to be clear here as well as doesn't always
[520]
show up as things that are obviously wrong. This
[523]
also shows up as things that are completely
[526]
enough. But things that are unfortunately still
[528]
commonplace in today's work environment things
[531]
like discrimination that are still happening day
[534]
to day, these types of behaviors are not just
[536]
creating a toxic environment, they are creating a
[539]
very hostile work environment for you and for
[542]
others on your team at your company. Now, of
[544]
course, when you're a toxic boss does any of those
[547]
things they are going to display sign number eight
[550]
of a toxic manager, and then there's going to be
[552]
that they completely lack accountability. Of
[555]
course, this also happens to be a treat of our
[558]
Narcissus and psychopaths. I do have videos on
[560]
both of those types of people as well. If you want
[563]
to check them out after this one, when your toxic
[566]
boss makes a mistake, when they completely mess
[569]
things up. They're going to hold zero
[571]
accountability and guess what they're going to
[573]
find a way to make it your fault. Maybe if you're
[576]
lucky, they're going to blame it all on one of
[579]
your co workers. Well you kind of I least add by
[581]
and maybe are just happy that it didn't fall on to
[584]
you. And I think that this is the worst part about
[587]
the toxic manager because their lack of
[589]
accountability is going to completely stunt their
[592]
professional development. They're going to stay
[595]
the toxic boss because they are not going to take
[598]
anything Accountability or responsibility for the
[600]
bad work environment that they're creating and the
[603]
negative results that they're achieving as a
[606]
direct result of their toxic boss behavior, and
[608]
now leads me directly to sign nine, that your boss
[611]
is toxic. And that is that they're just in general
[614]
and asshole. And yeah, that is basically the only
[617]
way that I can sum this up when you're working
[620]
with a jerk. And they're creating a bad
[622]
environment. And they are not just a bad manager,
[625]
but they are a toxic boss who's doing one or more
[627]
of the above listed things. This is a toxic
[630]
manager. And the sad reality is because especially
[633]
when it's paired with things like their lack of
[635]
accountability, it's not going to get fixed, which
[638]
leads me now into the bonus tip that I have for
[641]
you. And that is that you need to take action,
[644]
whether it's finding a way to transfer into a team
[646]
that doesn't have a toxic boss, or if you're in a
[649]
toxic company, actually finding an exit strategy
[652]
into a new company, you need to take action,
[654]
things are not going to improve and staying in a
[657]
toxic workplace or working for a toxic manager has
[660]
real implications and is a real risk to your
[663]
mental health and your well being. I do have
[665]
videos on job search strategies and everything
[668]
like that, which you absolutely do need to check
[670]
out. But if you haven't already, make sure and
[673]
click subscribe because my next few videos are
[676]
going to help you figure out how to survive while
[678]
you're still in that environment and how to
[681]
actually recover when you escape from it. But
[683]
there is one thing right now that you need to do
[686]
if you are working with a toxic manager and this
[689]
is the most important thing that you can do in a
[692]
toxic work environment in general and that is to
[694]
start cultivating positivity in your life. When
[697]
you have a toxic boss when you're in a toxic work
[700]
environment you're spending a lot of time every
[703]
single work day in a negative space. And this is
[705]
not good for you my friends. So finding ways to
[708]
intentionally cultivate positivity into your life
[711]
on a daily basis. And to you know have that after
[714]
work refresh are really really important. You can
[716]
get started right here with this video that I want
[719]
you to go and watch after this one if this video
[722]
helps you figure out if your boss is actually
[724]
toxic AF give it a like let me know if it helped
[727]
down in the comments below. And as always, thank
[730]
you so much for watching. I will see you in the
[733]
next video. Bye for now.
