Welcome to Quotacy's Q&A Friday
[2]
where聽we answer your life insurance questions.
[4]
Quotacy is an online life insurance broker
[7]
where聽you can get life insurance on your terms.
[9]
I'm Jeanna and I'm Natasha
[10]
Today's question is: can I use my聽term life insurance policy while I'm living?
[15]
Term life insurance is designed to provide your family聽cash
[19]
if you die unexpectedly, but there are add-ons you can get with your term policy
[23]
that can provide聽benefits in certain circumstances while you're living.
[27]
Some of these riders are free of charge聽and some can be added with a small fee.
[32]
Today we'll go over four term life insurance riders.
[34]
An聽accelerated death benefit rider allows a policyowner
[38]
to make a claim on the death benefit if the insured is diagnosed with a terminal illness.
[43]
In layman's terms, normally the death benefit isn't聽paid unless the insured person dies
[48]
but with this rider if the insured person is diagnosed with a聽terminal illness
[52]
the benefit can be paid early.
[54]
In most cases, you can choose to claim the entire聽benefit or just a portion.
[60]
If the entire benefit is claimed, the policy terminates.
[63]
If a partial聽benefit is claimed, the life insurance policy can continue
[67]
with a reduced death benefit and lower聽premiums.
[70]
Let's look at an example.
[71]
John bought a $500,000, 30-year term life insurance policy when聽he was 30 years old.
[77]
His monthly premiums are $29.87.
[81]
John is now 50 years old and was just diagnosed聽with terminal stage 4 lung cancer.
[86]
His doctor gives him up to a year to live.
[88]
John sends in a request聽to his life insurance company
[91]
and applies for $100,000 in accelerated death benefits.
[94]
He plans to聽use this money to take his entire family
[97]
on a week-long vacation to Hawaii.
[99]
After receiving the聽accelerated benefits of $100,000,
[103]
his policy's death benefit will be $400,000
[106]
and his premiums dropped to $26.08 per month.
[110]
The聽accelerated death benefit rider is included free of charge on most term life insurance policies.
[116]
Next up, the conversion rider.
[118]
A conversion rider allows a policyowner to change or convert
[121]
their term life insurance policy into a permanent life insurance policy.
[125]
The biggest benefit to this聽rider is that you can convert your policy
[129]
without needing to prove you're still insurable.
[131]
In other聽words, you could buy a term policy
[133]
and years later be diagnosed with cancer
[136]
and still be able to聽convert your term policy into a permanent policy,
[140]
which lasts your entire lifetime.
[141]
If you choose聽to convert, your premiums will increase.
[144]
You now own a permanent policy, not term,
[147]
and permanent life聽insurance is far more expensive.
[150]
But many insurers allow policy owners to do a partial conversion.
[153]
By doing a partial conversion, you'll now own two separate policies:
[157]
your new permanent one and聽whatever is remaining on the term policy.
[161]
Let's look at an example.
[163]
John is paying $20 per month聽for a 20-year $500,000 term life insurance policy.
[169]
His policy is set to expire at age 65 right when聽he's about to retire.
[174]
Unfortunately, at age 60 he's diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
[178]
He's going聽to get treatment, but knows his condition cannot be cured.
[181]
He doesn't want to risk his coverage ending聽and leaving his family with endless medical bills
[186]
so he decides to convert half of his term policy聽into a permanent one.
[190]
His new premiums will be $490 per month for the $250,000 permanent policy
[196]
plus $14 per month for the reduced聽$250,000 term policy.
[200]
If he dies within the next five years his family receives $500,000.
[205]
If he's still living after five years, the term policy will expire
[209]
and he has the聽$250,000 permanent policy remaining.
[212]
As long as John keeps paying the premiums, this policy will pay out聽$250,000 no matter when John dies.
[219]
Conversion riders are included free of charge on most term life聽
insurance policies.
[224]
Now let's talk about the waiver premium for disability rider.
[227]
That one's a mouthful,聽but kind of self-explanatory.
[230]
If you become disabled, this rider will waive your premiums.
[233]
So, if聽you become ill or disabled and are unable to work
[237]
the insurance company will keep your policy active聽while not requiring any premium payments.
[242]
You will need to continuously provide medical proof of聽your disability for as long as you need the rider benefits.
[249]
And once you're able to go back to聽work you need to start paying premiums again.
[252]
But all the waived premiums do not need to be paid聽back.
[256]
There is a small cost to add this rider. Let's look at an example.
[260]
John is 30 years old and聽applying for a 20-year $500,000 term life insurance policy.
[266]
He's a non-smoker and in great health.
[269]
His聽agent finds him a policy for $19.66 per month, but after going over rider options
[274]
he decides聽to add the waiver a premium for disability rider.
[278]
Doing so increases his monthly premium to $22.61聽per month.
[282]
The last rider we'll talk about today is the unemployment protection rider.
[287]
An聽unemployment protection rider will waive your premium payments
[290]
if you experience long-term聽unemployment.
[293]
These premiums will not need to be paid back.
[295]
There is a small cost to add this rider. Let's look at an example.
[299]
John is 30 years old and applying for a 20-year 750 000 term life insurance聽policy.
[305]
He's a non-smoker and in great health.
[307]
His agent finds him a policy for $38.53 per month聽but after going over rider options
[314]
he decides to add the unemployment protection rider.
[317]
Doing so聽increases his monthly premium to $40.57 per month.
[321]
We want to note that this rider is quite聽rare since few insurance companies still offer it
[326]
but ask your Quotacy agent if you're interested聽in adding it to your term life insurance policy.
