he bought mining land at a tax auction
[2]
in Park County but tonight the man says
[4]
the county quietly changed official
[6]
documents and moved his property off
[8]
mining territory chief investigative
[10]
reporter Eric Ross uncovered major
[12]
discrepancies County officials have yet
[15]
to fully explain when people fail to pay
[18]
their taxes and abandoned their property
[19]
the land goes up for sale at County tax
[22]
lien auctions Edie
[23]
Ecklie thought he scored a good deal but
[25]
a few years in he says County officials
[28]
are trying to take back the property
[29]
he's already making payments on our
[35]
whole life is based around mineral I
[39]
mean that's kind of what we do
[41]
edik lee is a small business owner he
[44]
runs this mining shop in the heart of
[46]
Florence and has turned what some call a
[48]
hobby into a career with prospect and we
[51]
look for mineral and we really had high
[53]
hopes to get up in there and maybe you
[55]
know do something with this mine in 2015
[58]
Ecklie purchased a parcel of land in
[60]
Park County just off County Road 60 the
[63]
land identified in section 24 on this
[65]
map is potentially full of minerals a
[67]
miners dream but now he says Park County
[70]
officials switched his property to
[72]
section 23 an area west of the mining
[75]
shaft with terrain that cannot be easily
[78]
accessed from everything that we've
[80]
looked through and we tried to verify
[82]
any possibility of a shaft over on 23 he
[85]
could take days or even weeks to try to
[88]
even locate in that type of rough
[90]
terrain and even by helicopter would
[92]
cost thousands of dollars to fly around
[93]
up there and look around you know from
[95]
Google Earth this is what the property
[97]
looks like that Ecklie says should be
[100]
his but this is where County officials
[102]
say ecklie's land now sits the geography
[105]
considerably different with this area
[108]
containing nothing but steep rocky
[110]
terrain with no roadways or trails all
[113]
of our documentation all over the
[115]
paperwork from previous owners clear
[117]
back into the late 18-hundreds all show
[119]
with that documentation as section 24 so
[123]
for them to be able to say oh no it was
[126]
a mistake and it's a mile to the west
[129]
it's very confusing and it's got us kind
[131]
of upset on this tax lien docq
[133]
and treasurer's deed obtained by News
[135]
five investigates it shows Ecklie should
[138]
have section 24 but if you visit the
[140]
County Tax Assessors website section 24
[143]
has been changed to 23 in an email to
[147]
news 5 investigates County Treasurer
[149]
Michelle Miller said quote after
[151]
investigating the treasurer's deed we
[153]
found that it was simply a typo on the
[155]
section number it should have been
[157]
section 23 but when we asked the county
[160]
to clarify the change in location
[162]
between section 23 and 24 surprisingly
[165]
we were told the county didn't know
[167]
about the location and would have to
[169]
look further into the historical section
[171]
number changes and get back with us
[173]
we're still waiting on answers it cannot
[176]
possibly be an honest mistake the last
[179]
part of our discussion was that
[181]
well we'll research this further and
[183]
we'll contact you and I gave them my
[187]
email they've got our phone number they
[189]
know exactly who we are and Sharon
[191]
Ackley and they will not contact us the
[195]
county also could not tell us who
[196]
legally owns section 24 but in the
[199]
course of our research we discovered a
[201]
big corporation called Earth Energy
[203]
Resources LLC has bought dozens of
[206]
properties from Park County most around
[208]
the same area Ecklie says his land
[211]
should be on this other situation has
[213]
got us thinking that there's something
[214]
really shady going on up in that
[217]
territory the treasurer told us specific
[220]
questions about mapping would have to be
[222]
answered by the assessor's office our
[223]
inquiry has been forwarded to them but
[226]
we have not yet heard back you can count
[228]
on us to get to the bottom of this case
[230]
and as new developments come in we'll be
[232]
sure to pass them along to you watching
[234]
out for you
