Newsmakers: Only Black-owned bank in Texas using partnerships to thrive - YouTube

Channel: unknown

[0]
from kprc 2 this is houston newsmakers
[4]
with cambrell marshall well it's
[7]
a bet that you probably have not seen a
[9]
lot of unity national bank branches
[11]
around and there's good reason for that
[13]
there are only two in texas both in the
[14]
houston region and one in atlanta
[16]
it is the only black-owned bank in texas
[18]
and one of fewer than three dozen in the
[20]
united states and the unity
[22]
national story is certainly one worth
[23]
telling and who better to tell that
[24]
story than the president and
[26]
ceo of unity national laura vignan thank
[28]
you
[29]
for joining me this morning lori talk
[30]
about the unique place the black-owned
[32]
business plays within the community
[35]
oh my goodness um black-owned businesses
[38]
and in particular an institution like
[40]
unity bank that is a black business
[42]
you know we have been a staple in this
[44]
community or in illinois communities for
[46]
many many years
[48]
um and so when there's a lack of
[50]
resources or when there's
[52]
um you know the removal of
[57]
communities or communities that are
[59]
usually not
[60]
um as a franchise businesses are leaving
[63]
it really
[64]
is incumbent upon the businesses who are
[66]
left behind to continue serving
[69]
unity has been in the historic third
[71]
ward
[72]
for almost 58 years now and
[75]
we have been a staple we are supporting
[78]
the businesses that are surrounding it
[79]
and we're also
[80]
wanting to make sure that those
[81]
businesses that have the left in the
[82]
past are coming back and are able to
[84]
access capital so um it's important
[87]
it's important and it's critical that we
[88]
remain and that we stay viable
[90]
and the partnerships are playing a big
[92]
role in everything it seems these days
[94]
and partnerships are certainly what is
[95]
helping your organization
[97]
i've been reading about the number of
[98]
other banks that are investing
[100]
in unity as a partnership in the
[102]
community talk a little bit about some
[103]
of the
[104]
investment dollars have been coming in
[105]
and how you've been able to benefit from
[107]
that
[107]
yeah you know one of the challenges
[109]
unity has had in the past is that
[111]
because of its
[112]
size and inability to raise capital
[115]
it has hindered our ability to really
[117]
bring on products and services that can
[118]
be very meaningful to our customers
[121]
and so when you have organizations in
[123]
large institutions
[125]
like wells and b of a
[128]
and city who have made an amigy who have
[131]
made
[132]
capital investments in our institution
[134]
it provides us with the
[136]
the money that we need in order to
[139]
deliver
[140]
new products and services which we're in
[142]
the process of putting together to
[144]
launch
[144]
and we're able to provide more loans um
[147]
and and credit to individuals who need
[150]
it more
[150]
and when a bank like unity is able to
[152]
provide that especially in a community
[154]
that we're
[155]
missions driven to serve it only means
[158]
we can do more
[159]
there's only um opportunities to do more
[161]
and so we're hoping that people will be
[163]
able to see
[163]
that see that we're available to do that
[166]
and that they'll take advantage of the
[168]
opportunity as it presents itself
[170]
and you and you were able to and you
[172]
were able to make a big impact when it
[174]
came time for the pp
[175]
uh loans and the loans during the
[177]
pandemic talk about that
[179]
yeah you know last year it was such an
[181]
unusual year on so many different levels
[184]
and you know to have a pandemic impact
[186]
our small businesses in in the way that
[188]
it did it was incumbent upon us to take
[190]
advantage of
[191]
you know government-sponsored sba us
[193]
treasury sponsor programs that were
[195]
available and i'm so glad that we did
[198]
so we were hands-on on the ground on
[201]
providing the loans to our small
[202]
businesses and what we
[204]
found out which was quite interesting is
[206]
that you know
[207]
a lot of the businesses you know had
[210]
relationships with some of the larger
[211]
institutions
[212]
but the challenge is you know often you
[214]
don't have a relationship with those
[216]
institutions you do transactions with
[217]
them but it's not a relationship
[219]
and at unity you have a relationship you
[221]
can walk in you can call us
[223]
you can talk to someone who can
[224]
literally provide you with the hand
[226]
holding that you need it
[227]
and and we were just excited that we
[230]
were able to not only
[232]
um we introduce ourselves to a lot of
[234]
small business
[235]
businesses in the community but we were
[237]
able to serve nearly 500 businesses
[240]
you know as a result of the ppp program
[243]
and i will add we are still promoting
[245]
the program we are still providing
[247]
um the loans to our small businesses and
[249]
i encourage them to please call us if
[251]
you're
[251]
if you're still interested in you need
[254]
the support
[255]
so in short bit of time we have left
[256]
what's your hope for the
[258]
future for unity how much growth do you
[260]
think you're going to have in the next
[261]
year
[262]
oh my goodness you know when i came on
[264]
board
[265]
um the bank was at an asset size of 106
[269]
million dollars we have literally grown
[271]
to nearly 187 million
[274]
um in the last year and we are poised to
[277]
grow even further
[279]
we have the capital that we need in
[281]
order to be able to provide more online
[284]
banking products
[285]
which i'm really excited about being
[287]
able um that's coming very soon and
[289]
hopefully by the summer
[290]
early summer people will be able to see
[292]
that we have online banking services to
[294]
serve them more
[296]
and we have capital we understand the
[298]
need is great for our small businesses
[300]
to be able to access
[301]
capital and unity bank understands our
[303]
customers probably better than most
[305]
and we're here to serve well i'm looking
[307]
forward to the good juicy stuff coming
[309]
up this summer i promise you'll come
[310]
back and talk about that
[312]
all right good deal laura vignall thank
[315]
you so much for what you do and what the
[316]
bank does for the community
[318]
uh we thank you for being here this
[319]
morning good luck in your future
[320]
endeavors
[321]
