of the tow and the impound resulting

from your roadside stunt driving charge

in ontario so as per the new mums act
[12]
the moving ontarians more safely act

you've just been charged with stunt
[17]
driving and given a 14-day roadside tow
[20]
and impoundment and you've also got a
[22]
30-day license suspension in ontario
[25]
under section 172-1 of the highway
[28]
traffic act now you may have a court
[29]
date between two to four months possibly
[31]
more in the future so the question is
[33]
what now so let's take a closer look at
[36]
the cost of the towing and the impound
[39]
there are four potential costs that are
[41]
part of the tow in the impound fee one
[43]
the tow cost this is generally a flat
[46]
towing rate set out by the municipality
[49]
with the possibility of some additional
[51]
fees should the vehicle need for example
[52]
to be winched into position before
[54]
towing
[55]
two the extra kilometer cost the towing
[58]
itself may be a flat fee however the
[60]
operators could start charging
[63]
for kilometers traveled once they're
[64]
outside of city limits three the storage
[67]
cost this is generally a flat fee per
[69]
day which would then be multiplied by
[71]
the 14 days your car remains an impound
[74]
four additional costs these fees can
[77]
include uh cost recovery fees surcharges
[80]
uh depending on where you're towed
[81]
example if you're towed off of certain
[83]
highways if you have a collision if
[84]
there's an off-road recovery of the
[86]
vehicle so let's look at number one the
[88]
tow cost in ontario total costs are

generally regulated or fixed fees if you
[93]
drive a standard vehicle it would be a
[94]
fixed tofi which can range from around
[97]
let's say 250 dollars plus or minus and
[99]
the police in that area that you were
[101]
charged with stunt driving generally
[102]
have a contract with a set uh set of
[104]
towing companies so the rates are
[106]
controlled now this may not always be
[108]
the case depending on where in ontario
[111]
you were charged but due to
[112]
controversial tow truck incidents
[115]
over the past year or so the government
[116]
ontario set up some proposed guidelines
[118]
and regulations for the towing industry
[120]
that
[121]
will control the costs across the
[123]
province let's look at number two the
[125]
extra kilometer cost
[127]
this is dependent on where you are
[129]
charged with stunt driving in ontario
[131]
there may be a flat fee for the towing
[133]
but if you are out outside of the
[136]
distance range for a towing company you
[138]
may find yourself with some extra
[139]
kilometer charges above and beyond that

flat fee and this generally happens

let's say in

rural areas where the distance to many
[146]
tow yards is much greater than that of a
[149]
city

and you will see this on your invoice

it's added to the tow charge so now

let's look at the per day storage costs

as of 2021 the general daily storage
[159]
cost looks to be upwards of let's say 60
[161]
dollars per day again this varies and is
[163]
set out as a fixed daily rate at the tow
[166]
yard of the impound so the overall cost
[169]
after my 14 day tone impound how much is

this again this is difficult to quantify
[173]
as each case is different with a
[175]
different set of circumstances but be
[177]
prepared to pay upwards of 1500 or more
[180]
and this could be slightly less but or
[183]
can be much more depending on your
[184]
location as outlined above

you may want to call the tow yard after

your car has been impounded to get a
[190]
proper breakdown of your cost just so

you can plan ahead so what are my next

steps after my 30-day suspension and

this 14-day tow and car impound you've
[201]
now been charged with stunt driving in

ontario but remember this doesn't mean

that you'll be convicted of the actual
[207]
charge of stunt driving the charge is

just the beginning of the legal process

and yes this is a

devastating start because now you have

this 14-day car impound this 30-day
[216]
license suspension at the roadside
[218]
before you even get to your court date

so

now i suggest is the time to get some

legal advice and proceed very carefully

because while stunt driving
[228]
may seem on the surface like a simple
[230]
traffic charge that many people will not
[231]
take seriously think about it more in
[233]
the context of how you would function if
[235]
your license was suspended and you
[237]
couldn't drive for a minimum of one year
[240]
if that's the case you run the real risk
[242]
of losing your job you run the real risk
[244]
of not being able to get to job
[245]
interviews not being able to take care
[247]
of your family not being able to use a
[249]
car for emergencies and so many other
[252]
reasons and that's how serious this
[254]
charge can be if it's not dealt with
[255]
