Why file a u.s tax return when you聽 don't even live in the US anymore?聽聽
[5]
Because you might be getting thousands in聽 refunds every single year even with no US income.聽聽
[12]
Watch and learn. Hello, I'm Nathalie, CEO of聽 MyExpatTaxes and fellow parent. his video is聽聽
[18]
dedicated to all those parents out there juggling聽 family life with the added bonus of international聽聽
[24]
family get-togethers during a pandemic and staying聽 on top of their u.s expat taxes. So kudos to you.聽聽
[32]
Now let's dive in and figure out how to get聽 you a refund to make it worth all the effort
[47]
What is a child tax credit? In short, US tax聽 filing parents can claim a credit between one聽聽
[52]
thousand four hundred dollars and three thousand聽 six hundred dollars per qualifying child on their聽聽
[57]
u.s tax return every year. This credit will聽 first lower any u.s tax due on your return聽聽
[64]
but if you still have remaining credit left over聽聽
[68]
that means it can be refundable which means聽 the IRS would actually pay you this money.聽聽
[74]
But the key term to hold on to here is what is聽 a qualifying child? Is your child a qualifying聽聽
[80]
child? There are three main checks. Can you claim聽 your child as a dependent on your tax return?聽聽
[85]
If you're unsure check out my expert taxes we'll聽 help you determine that for free. Does your child聽聽
[90]
have a valid us social security number by the due聽 date of your tax return including extensions? And聽聽
[97]
is your child young enough? You'll need to know聽 their age as of December 31st of that tax year聽聽
[102]
the age threshold was under age 18 for the 2021聽 tax year and under age 17 for all other tax years.聽聽
[111]
How much child tax credit can you get per child?聽 Well, it depends on what year we're talking聽聽
[117]
for the 2021 tax year that we file now in聽 calendar year 2022 we have special increased聽聽
[125]
amounts due to the pandemic. Three thousand six聽 hundred dollars per child under the age of six聽聽
[131]
three thousand dollars per child aged six to聽 seventeen and for the 2020 tax year and prior the聽聽
[140]
amount was two thousand dollars per child under聽 the age of 17. So how much of the child tax credit聽聽
[147]
is actually refundable? Well, this depends on more聽 than just the tax year it also depends on your聽聽
[152]
expat status and for the 2021 tax period, the big聽 question is did you spend more than half of 2021聽聽
[160]
living in the u.s? The IRS defines living聽 in the u.s for a majority of 2021 as聽聽
[167]
if you or your spouse if filing jointly had a聽 principal place of abode in the united states for聽聽
[172]
more than one half of 2021 this means that your聽 main home was in the 50 states or the district of聽聽
[180]
columbia for more than one half of 2021. Your main聽 home can be any location where you regularly live.聽聽
[187]
Your main home may be your house, apartment,聽 mobile home, shelter, temporary lodging,聽聽
[194]
or other location and doesn't need to be the聽 same physical location throughout the year.聽聽
[200]
You don't need a permanent address and possibly聽 the most important part if you're temporarily away聽聽
[206]
from your main home because of illness, education,聽 business, or vacation, you are generally treated聽聽
[213]
as living in your main home. So if you are abroad聽 due to a temporary reason listed on the screen,聽聽
[219]
you can still certify in MyExpatTaxes that聽 you were considered as living in the us聽聽
[223]
your main home for the majority of 2021. Also,聽 for those who are stationed abroad, no worries.聽聽
[231]
US military personnel stationed outside the united聽 states on extended active duty are considered to聽聽
[237]
have a main home in the United States for purposes聽 of claiming a child tax credit. Coming back to the聽聽
[244]
refundable amount calculation, so if you had a聽 main home in the US for more than half of 2021,聽聽
[251]
then the full amount would be refundable.聽 Let me repeat that for you expats out there聽聽
[256]
in Antarctica. The full amount would be聽 refundable so that's three thousand six聽聽
[261]
hundred dollars per child aged under six three聽 thousand dollars per child aged between 6 and 17.聽聽
[270]
But, if you did not have a main home聽 in the u.s for more than half of 2021,聽聽
[276]
then you can only claim the normal聽 $1,400 per child as a refundable amount.聽聽
[284]
And, for years prior to 2021, so for tax period聽 2020 2019 regardless of your expert status you聽聽
[292]
can only claim the normal amount of four hundred聽 dollars per child as a refundable child tax credit聽聽
[300]
you must be thinking wait i don't have any u.s聽 income i don't pay any u.s taxes why would the聽聽
[306]
u.s government give me a tax refund well like聽 many other countries the US will provide financial聽聽
[312]
assistance to parents in the form of tax credits聽 and refunds regardless of where you live or work聽聽
[319]
just keep in mind you cannot get a refund聽 if you use the foreign income exclusion聽聽
[324]
or your earned income is not high enough.聽 If that sounds confusing, don't worry. We聽聽
[329]
got you. MyExpatTaxes will calculate what聽 you're eligible for MyExpatTaxes is the only聽聽

[344]

[348]
but I'll briefly touch on them right now if you聽 got advanced child tax credits the IRS would have聽聽
[354]
sent you letter 6419 make sure you at least model聽 your return on my expect taxes before April 18,聽聽
[361]
2022, because any access advanced payments聽 need to be paid back to the IRS stat聽聽
[367]
the child independent care credit also got major聽 increases and is refundable for those that lived聽聽
[373]
in the u.s for more than half of 2021 and lastly聽 if you have children without a u.s social security聽聽
[379]
number or just added a new family member last聽 year file an extension via MyExpatTaxes asap聽聽
