What is OpenCore Computer? (Illegal Hackintosh Vendor?) - Krazy Ken's Tech Talk - YouTube

Channel: Computer Clan

[1]
- Today on December 15, 2009,
[3]
a California judge issued a permanent injunction,
[5]
which prohibits Psystar from selling their commercial
[8]
Hackintoshes, AKA open computers,
[11]
which illegally are sold with Apple's Mac OS X software.
[14]
Surely today is a great lesson in copyright law,
[17]
and we won't have to deal with this issue ever again.
[22]
It happened again.
[24]
(intense techno music)
[28]
Does nobody frickin' learn from history?
[30]
Really?
[31]
We're doing this again?
[33]
Okay, let's just get it over with.
[34]
Hey guys, how are you all doing?
[36]
Really, that's just great.
[37]
I'm doing pretty great today, too,
[38]
because I get high off of other people's stupidity.
[42]
That's why I made that Lit Mobile episode,
[44]
and don't worry.
[45]
I still have some followup episodes planned for that.
[47]
So stay tuned.
[48]
But today we're gonna be talking about another company
[51]
that just does not seem to get it.
[54]
OpenCore Computer launched a commercial Hackintosh.
[57]
What's a Hackintosh?
[58]
Quick lesson.
[59]
A Hackintosh is a portmanteau of hack and Macintosh.
[62]
Apples's macOS system software is made to only run on Macs.
[67]
But the Hackintosh community created ways
[69]
to run that software on non-Apple hardware.
[71]
If you're not selling the systems, generally,
[73]
you won't have any legal issues with this,
[76]
but commercial Hackintosh is where we hit the big problems.
[79]
That's what Psystar sold.
[81]
They're defunct now.
[82]
Anyway, back to OpenCore Computer,
[85]
you can go to their website, opencore.computer,
[88]
to build your configuration, but wait, hang on.
[90]
Did they just steal the name and logo
[92]
from the OpenCore bootloader developers?
[95]
Shameless.
[96]
Well, anyway, let's look at their website.
[99]
They have a single page
[100]
which tries to sell the idea behind the computer.
[102]
At the bottom, you can configure a system
[104]
macOS Catalina installed,
[106]
using the OpenCore bootloader.
[108]
Huh, they misspelled illegally, weird.
[111]
There's three models,
[112]
but only the Velociraptor is available on this day.
[116]
If you ask me, the company's gonna get shut
[118]
down before the Megalodon even releases.
[120]
Place your bets now.
[121]
If you max everything out, it'll cost you $4,819,
[125]
if you pay the full amount.
[127]
By the way, their config wizard is tedious as (beeping).
[131]
Now here's where I see the first red flag.
[133]
Well, I saw a bunch already,
[134]
but this is a real red flag.
[136]
Because of the convoluted macOS end user license agreement
[140]
agreement, our payment provider options are limited.
[144]
Thus, we've chosen to only accept
[145]
a Bitcoin payments currently.
[147]
They even go on to imply this isn't a scam.
[150]
Personally, I don't think this is a scam.
[152]
Well, at least yet.
[153]
That's not the main thing I'm concerned about.
[154]
The main thing I'm concerned about
[156]
is that they're violating copyright law
[158]
and stealing other company's intellectual property.
[161]
Pro tip, don't do that.
[163]
Now I'm no legal expert,
[165]
but the macOS EULA stipulates
[166]
you cannot redistribute, sell, or sub-license this software.
[170]
And it seems like OpenCore Computer
[172]
is trying to get around that
[174]
by only accepting Bitcoin payments.
[176]
I'm not exactly sure how that loophole works.
[179]
So we'll see how long that actually lasts.
[182]
Also taking a look at the hero images on the website,
[185]
the computer case looks Photoshopped.
[187]
Knowing this company, it was probably
[189]
with a pirated version of Photoshop.
[191]
Anyway, the local brightness and aspect ratio
[193]
doesn't match up between these two images.
[195]
And in case you're wondering,
[197]
the computer case they're using is a Lian Li TU-150.
[200]
Now here's a question I have received a million times.
[203]
Krazy Ken, why doesn't Apple just allow other people
[206]
in companies to install macOS on non-Apple hardware?
[210]
It's a legit question.
[211]
I get it.
[212]
And we can go down a huge rabbit hole of reasons,
[215]
but the best answer I can give is this.
[218]
They already tried that and it sucked,
[221]
financially.
[222]
There was a time where Apple allowed other vendors
[225]
to sell their own computers, non-Apple computers,
[228]
with Mac ROMs and macOS software,
[231]
just like the SuperMac right here.
[233]
And these computers were collectively known as Mac Clones.
[238]
With the success of Windows,
[239]
Microsoft was gaining tons of users.
[241]
This clearly demonstrated how successful
[243]
their cross platform strategy was.
[246]
- Because of the competitive pressures,
[247]
Apple is doing more than just
[249]
upgrading its Macintosh operating system.
[251]
It has begun to license the macOS
[253]
and authorize the manufacture and sale of Macintosh clones.
[257]
- The first official Mac clone launched on March 27, 1995.
[261]
It was a Radius System 100,
[263]
and it featured a PowerPC 601 with a clock speed
[266]
of up to 110 megahertz and 264 megabytes of RAM.
[270]
Over time, Apple actually lost money doing this,
[273]
and they weren't gaining any more market share.
[275]
So it totally wasn't worth it.
[278]
Apple received $50 for each Mac clone sold.
[281]
There might've been some other fluctuations in that price
[284]
depending on different agreements,
[285]
but it was pretty much 50 bucks per computer.
[288]
And that was not enough to keep this plan going.
[291]
So some changes needed to be made.
[292]
When Steve jobs came back to Apple in 1997,
[295]
he made a lot of changes with the company.
[297]
And one of them had to do with the Mac clones.
[300]
- I went to the clone vendors,
[302]
and I said, "Guys, we're gonna go broke doing this.
[306]
"And if we go down the (bleeping)
[308]
"the whole ecosystem will go down the (bleeping)
[310]
"and you won't be here either.
[312]
"So we gotta fix this.
[314]
"We'd like to sell you our software,
[316]
"but you've gotta pay a fair price for it,
[318]
"not an exorbitant price,
[319]
"just a fair percentage of the costs."
[321]
And we outlined what that was.
[323]
We asked them to do that.
[324]
I personally asked them to do this.
[327]
And they basically told me to go pound sand.
[329]
Being a man of perseverance,
[331]
I asked five times over the next three weeks,
[334]
each time we were told to go pound sand.
[336]
We finally made the decisions we had to make.
[338]
- Ultimately, Steve Jobs killed the clone program.
[342]
With the release of Mac OS 8
[343]
no existing clone vendors could sell computers
[346]
with the newer operating system
[347]
because they were only licensed to sell computers
[349]
with system seven.
[351]
Umax, however, obtained a license to ship Mac OS 8.
[355]
So they could still do this whole thing.
[356]
But that license expired in 1998.
[359]
After that, the Mac clone program shriveled and died.
[362]
Shout out to my buddy, Steve,
[364]
from Mac84 for helping me research the Macintosh clones.
[367]
He's actually working on a much more in-depth video,
[369]
which covers the clone history.
[371]
Plus he covers many other topics on his channel.
[373]
So go check him out.
[375]
And there were other Mac clones
[376]
before the official Macintosh clone program.
[379]
I actually showed one of these
[380]
and many other rare Apple prototypes in this video,
[383]
which you can watch with
[383]
The Computer Clan YouTube channel membership.
[385]
So go check that out, too.
[388]
So Apple already did try this,
[390]
and we know history repeats itself
[392]
if you don't learn from it,
[393]
and they don't wanna go down that road again.
[396]
That's why they had to stop Psystar.
[398]
And that's why they're gonna stop Open Computer as well.
[400]
My bet is this is not gonna last more than a few months.
[403]
And I'm totally cool with the Hackintosh community.
[406]
Heck I can't wait to try some Hackintosh stuff out myself.
[409]
I think that'll be fun.
[410]
And if you do that stuff, great,
[412]
just don't sell those things.
[414]
So let me know in the comments below
[415]
what you think about this whole mess,
[417]
and if you wanna get some other goodies
[418]
from myself and from the computer clan,
[420]
