A Message From President Margee Ensign and Board Chair John E. Jones III '77, P'11 - YouTube
Channel: unknown
[0]
Dear Dickinsonians, I'm here today with my
good friend and mentor, Judge Jones to make
[7]
an announcement.
[9]
It's been an absolute privilege to be Dickinson's
29th president these four years.
[14]
I've loved every minute of it.
[17]
It's been an extremely difficult decision
to leave Dickinson, a place that I love, an
[25]
education that I believe in so much.
[28]
But I've been asked to return to the American
University of Nigeria and I feel compelled
[33]
to go to continue the work that we began a
number of years ago in peace-building and
[39]
extending education not just to young Nigerians
but to Africans throughout the continent and
[45]
to many young children who are out of school.
[48]
I've said to many students here, our work,
our education must be used for the common
[55]
good.
[56]
And that's what compels me to make this decision.
[58]
So when you leave an institution and a place
and people that you believe in so much, you
[63]
always worry about what's coming next.
[66]
There are no worries at Dickinson.
[69]
I believe Dickinson is about to have the most
impactful president we've ever had, and I'm
[75]
just absolutely thrilled that Judge John Jones
will be the interim president at Dickinson.
[81]
John brings all of the knowledge and the skills
and the energy needed at this moment to take
[87]
Dickinson to newer heights.
[90]
Thank you, Margee.
[91]
And I thank you for your trust.
[92]
If it's possible for two people to mentor
each other, then you've certainly been my
[97]
mentor as well.
[99]
It has been an absolute joy to work with you,
during these last four years as chair of the
[104]
board.
[105]
So I'm here with a heavy heart today, but
also with great enthusiasm.
[110]
For those of you who don't know me, I'm a
member of the Class of 1977.
[115]
My son, John, is a member of the Class of
2011.
[118]
I also have a niece, Lexi, who graduated from
Dickinson College.
[122]
So it's all in the family.
[124]
I love Dickinson College.
[125]
I have been privileged to be on the board
since 2008, so I'm not a newcomer to campus,
[131]
but I understand that the role of president
of the college is distinctly different from
[135]
my role as chair of the board.
[137]
During the summer, I will step down from my
role as United States District Judge.
[142]
I'll retire from that position to take on
this position.
[145]
And of course, I'll also resign as chair of
the board of trustees.
[149]
I'm all in, in this position as it should
be.
[152]
I feel called to this position.
[154]
I feel that this is my time to step up and
to serve my Alma Mater.
[159]
And I expect to do that with great vigor,
with great enthusiasm and total commitment.
[165]
Let me talk for a moment directly to our students.
[170]
We're here because of you and we should never
forget that.
[173]
I've never forgotten that as a chair of the
board.
[175]
And I'll never forget that as a president
of the college.
[179]
You know, our mission remains the same.
[181]
It is to provide that terrific liberal arts
education.
[185]
We've been innovative.
[186]
We've been cutting edge at Dickinson and will
remain so, but the core mission of Dickinson
[191]
will remain the same.
[193]
We produce leaders and Dickinson will continue
to produce leaders.
[198]
So I think that for our students, you should
understand that this is an exemplary educational
[203]
experience.
[204]
You know, Dickinson has, what I have always
described as, a world-class faculty.
[210]
I know you, I know most of you, I have worked
with you.
[213]
I have taught, classes for many of you.
[217]
I know that I'll be serving you in a different
way.
[221]
I thank you for everything that you've done.
[223]
And I hope that you'll give me the same support
that you gave and have given to Margee during
[228]
her tenure as president and one final word,
Margee.
[232]
Thank you.
[233]
Thank you so much for everything that you've
done.
[235]
As I said, this is a bittersweet moment for
me.
[239]
I have found working with you to be such a
great privilege and I have learned so much
[245]
from you and broadened my horizons.
[248]
And I look forward to continuing our warm
friendship and relationship, through all the
[253]
days ahead.
[254]
Thank you for those kind words, John.
[257]
Your support, your advice, your wisdom, these
four years have been invaluable and your leadership
[263]
will shine in this new position.
[266]
And I wish you all the best.
