Body Position on Track: How Close to the Tank? Different Approaches & Their Benefits - YouTube
Channel: Life at Lean
[0]
seating position can be a nuanced affair
[2]
for each and every rider with big
[4]
differences being observable even from
[6]
the best riders in the world in this
[8]
video I want to touch on one particular
[10]
facet of seating position and how that
[13]
can help or hinder your ability to do
[15]
your job on the bike how close should we
[18]
sit to the tank so we're going to look
[25]
at how close or far away from the tank
[27]
we should be sitting specifically should
[30]
we sit as close as we possibly can or
[32]
sit a little weight off it let's jump
[34]
straight in and look at the pros and
[36]
cons of each first we'll look at sitting
[38]
as close as possible by that I mean
[41]
sitting as far forward in the seat as
[43]
you can without any space between your
[46]
man or woman parts sitting forward like
[48]
this offers two main benefits one fairly
[51]
big and one not so big the biggest
[53]
benefit it offers is the greater support
[56]
for the lower body under braking having
[58]
slid as far forward as you can when the
[60]
time comes that you need to brake very
[62]
hard for the next corner you shouldn't
[64]
have any trouble stopping yourself
[65]
sliding forward in the seat because
[67]
there's nowhere else to go
[68]
this can save a little energy compared
[71]
to a rider that sits further back and
[73]
has to brace themselves to maintain
[75]
their original seating position the
[77]
other not so big benefit comes on the
[79]
power when exiting a corner on modern
[81]
powerful machines it doesn't take too
[83]
much to have the front wheel pouring the
[85]
air and even on bikes with wheelie
[87]
control if you can stop that electronic
[89]
aid kicking in to keep the bike driving
[91]
forward then that's simply going to save
[93]
you time by sitting farther forward more
[96]
of your weight is over the front end
[97]
meaning you can accelerate harder before
[100]
the front wheel begins to lift however
[102]
we're only talking about a few inches
[103]
difference here so really that in itself
[106]
won't have a big difference for most
[107]
track riders the biggest downside to
[110]
this seating position is how it affects
[112]
your ability to hang off the bike
[113]
sitting close to the tank means you'll
[116]
have a tendency to rotate around it when
[118]
you try to slide off sideways which will
[120]
most likely leave you in a crossed up
[122]
position on the bike your inside knee
[126]
will also move more forward of the bike
[128]
rather than moving out away from it as
[130]
it should if you try to slide off too
[133]
much from this
[134]
you can also lose too much contact with
[136]
the outside leg which will compromise
[138]
your lower body stability and mean
[140]
you'll struggle to maintain a more
[141]
modern style of hanging off this is
[144]
because when trying to slide off the
[145]
seat when sitting close to the tank
[147]
it tends to lever the outside leg off it
[150]
another downside is just the opposite of
[153]
the advantage we just talked about
[154]
sitting farther forward will mean the
[156]
rear wheel will lift easier under
[158]
braking because your weight is further
[160]
forward but again this will only be a
[162]
small difference now let's look at
[164]
sitting a little way off the tank by
[167]
this I mean sitting about 3-4 inches
[169]
away from the tank which is about 8 to
[171]
10 centimeters we don't want to sit too
[174]
far back because that can also
[176]
compromise lower body stability like we
[178]
talked about in my video on fatiguing
[180]
legs and achy knees we're sitting too
[183]
far back puts a lot of strain on the
[185]
legs during your hang off because once
[186]
again you don't have quality connection
[188]
with that outside leg as you would
[191]
expect the advantages are the opposite
[193]
of the disadvantages in the previous
[195]
case if we sit a little way further back
[198]
we can more easily slide sideways off
[200]
the seats while retaining a good solid
[202]
contact with the outside leg which is a
[204]
vital part of your lower body stability
[206]
especially for the average rider where
[208]
leg strength and stamina is at a premium
[210]
also with your hips less twisted and
[213]
more square with the bike it's easier to
[216]
find and maintain a nice neutral upper
[218]
body position with your spine either
[220]
running parallel with the bike or
[222]
pointing a little way to the inside of
[224]
it this is a more ideal position by
[226]
modern standards and again by sitting
[229]
farther back you'll gain a slight
[231]
advantage in terms of outright braking
[233]
potential with more of your weight over
[235]
the rear wheel as for the downsides the
[237]
biggest comes from the extra lower body
[239]
support needed under braking to stop
[242]
yourself sliding forward this can come
[244]
from your feet on the pegs and your
[245]
knees up against the tank which
[247]
depending on your bike setup can require
[249]
a fair amount of effort to achieve in
[251]
the biggest braking zones so which
[254]
should you use anyone that's been
[257]
following me for a while would likely
[258]
know that I advocate sitting a little
[260]
way back from the tank for all the body
[262]
position benefits it brings I think this
[264]
approach Falls more in line with what we
[266]
see today in
[267]
performance writing and it's what I
[269]
recommend writers aim to achieve because
[271]
in my opinion the positives outweigh the
[273]
negatives however I don't tend to be
[275]
someone that vehement Lee sits behind
[277]
every tiny detail of body positions
[279]
saying that it must be done a certain
[281]
way especially when riders up to a very
[284]
high level can be observed taking
[285]
different approaches for that reason I'd
[287]
always suggest working to achieve the
[290]
modern standard of riding but if you
[291]
genuinely feel it's more comfortable to
[293]
use the former approach and it allows
[295]
you to ride to a higher standard I'm not
[297]
going to tell you you're wrong as long
[299]
as you're adhering to the fundamentals
[301]
of a good body position that approach is
[303]
OK in my book how far away do you sit
[306]
from the tank and have you made any
[307]
tweaks in the past to improve your
[309]
overall support and comfort tell us
[311]
about it in the comments down below and
