Now we’ll shift gears a little bit to tell you about the University’s insurance requirement
[8]
and the optional insurance plan that’s offered through our Office of Student Health Benefits.
[12]
The University requires all full-time students to have health insurance
[16]
whether that’s through a parent's employer plan, the marketplace, or through the University’s sponsored plan.
[22]
The choice is up to you, but we do encourage you to compare costs
[26]
to make sure your student has the best coverage during their college career here
[30]
and can focus on their academics instead of worrying about their health.
[33]
The university’s Office of Student Health Benefits is dedicated to meeting the healthcare needs of the entire student,
[40]
graduate assistant, and resident population for all 5 University of Minnesota campuses.
[46]
They provide affordable and convenient health care plans,
[49]
as well as education, resources, and one-on-one customer service to help students make health care decisions.
[56]
Student Health Benefits manages the health plans that are offered to students,
[60]
as well as oversees the University's health insurance requirement.
[63]
The university requires that all students who are admitted to a degree program
[68]
and registered for six or more credits that count toward the automatic assessment
[73]
of the Student Services Fee are required by the University of Minnesota to have health insurance.
[80]
Most students meet this eligibility criteria, and are required to either enroll in the Student Health Benefit Plan
[87]
or waive and provide proof of other insurance;
[90]
however, the University-sponsored plan is often a better value
[94]
and offers higher quality benefits than existing health plans.
[98]
You and your student could benefit from switching to the Student Health Benefit Plan.
[102]
Highlights of the Student Health Benefit Plan include:
[106]
100% coverage for preventative care, access to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield worldwide network,
[113]
year-round coverage, no deductible, convenient on-campus access,
[119]
and emergency travel assistance.
[122]
Automatically included in the plan is preventive dental benefits administered by Delta Dental.
[130]
This includes coverage for routine teeth cleaning, exams, and x rays.
[135]
Goldy has this benefit, and just look how shiny his teeth are!
[139]
If students want additional dental benefits, they may enroll in the Dental Buy-Up Plan.
[145]
This will provide coverage for cavities, wisdom teeth removal, and emergency treatment.
[150]
The cost is $498 for a full year of coverage.
[154]
Students can only enroll in the Buy-Up Plan during our fall open enrollment period.
[159]
You can find enrollment forms and more information on the Student Health Benefits website, shb.umn.edu.
[168]
The cost of the insurance plan is $1,272 per semester.
[173]
This is an average cost of $212 dollars per month.
[178]
The fee is posted to your student’s account and can be paid at the same time as tuition.
[183]
Coverage dates for the Student Health Benefit Plan are August 24, 2020 to August 22, 2021.
[191]
Coverage for student dental plans runs September 1, 2020 to August 31, 2021.
[199]
Enrolling for the fall and spring coverage will provide 12 months of coverage,
[204]
with no gap over summer or during winter break.
[207]
Students will meet the University’s health insurance requirement by completing the online Health Coverage Declaration.
[215]
The declaration is used to enroll in or waive the Student Health Benefit Plan.
[221]
Your student can access the Health Coverage Declaration by logging into their MyU,
[226]
clicking “Key Links” at the top of the page,
[229]
and then clicking on their Student Center.
[231]
If the declaration has not yet been completed, it should automatically pop up when they enter their Student Center.
[237]
They will also get several emails with a link to the Health Coverage Declaration and more information.
[244]
It is more important to note, that if students take NO action to provide proof of insurance,
[250]
they will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Benefit Plan.
[255]
If your student wants to enroll in the Student Health Benefit Plan, choose “enroll me”.
[261]
If eligible, your student will be enrolled in and billed for the student health benefit plan.
[267]
If your student already has health insurance, choose “waive me”.
[271]
our student will enter their health insurance information and have a 1-year waiver from the student health benefit plan.
[278]
Once your student completes the Health Coverage Declaration or HCD,
[285]
they can review their response at any time in the MyU Communication Center,
[289]
which is conveniently located in the same place they completed the HCD.
[295]
The deadline to complete the health insurance requirement is October 1, 2020.
[300]
If no action is taken by your student, they will be automatically enrolled in and billed for the Student Health Benefit Plan.

[333]
So, what do you need to do now?
[335]
We know we’ve just provided you with a lot of information, so to wrap things up,
[340]
we want to reiterate the two areas you’ll need to take action on as the start of the school year approaches.
[347]
First, take care of the immunization requirement as soon as you can so you can check that off your list.
[353]
If your student doesn’t complete this before spring semester registration, which takes place in November,
[358]
they will have trouble registering for classes.
[361]
This can be done on our website. boynton.umn.edu/immunizations-requirement
[370]
Second, to meet the University’s health insurance requirement
[375]
ou must enroll in or waive university-sponsored coverage by October 1, 2020.
[382]
Your student will receive several notices to their University email with instructions on how to do this.
[388]
And finally, we hope you and your student can rest assured that quality health care is available
[394]
if and when it’s needed during your student’s time on campus.
[397]
Access to Boynton is one of the benefits of attending the university,
[401]
and we hope you’ll tell your student to visit us.
[404]
From the staff at Boynton Health and the Office of Student Health Benefits,
[408]
thank you for choosing the University of Minnesota.
[411]
We will take good care of your student!
