Hi everyone I'm Ben Gonzalez and this is TDI.
[7]
Today we're going to be talking about the different types
[9]
of auto insurance, terms you may hear when you're
[11]
out shopping and you weren't
[12]
quite sure what they meant.
[14]
We're gonna help you learn about those terms.
[16]
And joining us today is Nicole Beall
[17]
from our property and casualty area.
[19]
Nicole, what's the first thing
[22]
that consumers should think about when they're out
[24]
shopping for auto insurance.
[25]
Sure. So the first thing is it's not all about price.
[28]
A lot of people want to, you know get the best
[30]
deal and that's great, you should shop around,
[32]
try to find a good rate for yourself,
[34]
but don't cut coverage to get that good price.
[38]
A lot of companies offer different
[39]
things, different options, different limitations.
[42]
Just know what you're buying.
[43]
Okay, so you got to think about your budget.
[46]
but also think about
[47]
the coverage that you're purchasing.
[48]
Exactly.
[49]
So, the law does require all drivers to have
[53]
at the minimum liability,
[55]
but I think there's some confusion there about what
[57]
that actually covers, so what does liability cover?
[60]
So liability covers you if you're at
[62]
fault in an accident it's gonna pay the other person
[65]
for their injuries and for the damage to their car.
[67]
So say you know, you're driving and you
[69]
side swipe someone,
[70]
you didn't know they were in your blind spot
[71]
and you hit them
[73]
That happens.
[74]
All the time.
[74]
Unfortunately. All the time.
[76]
So that's gonna, your liability coverage is gonna pay for
[80]
that person's car, to get that person's car fixed,
[82]
that's going to get them into a rental car
[84]
and it's gonna pay for their injuries too.
[86]
And the, the law provides minimums
[89]
for each accident right?
[90]
What are those minimums?
[92]
So those minimums are, it's $25,000 for
[95]
property damage, that's the damage to their car
[97]
or other structures if you happen to hit something else.
[101]
Then it's $30,000 for the injuries to the other person,
[105]
up to a total of $60,000 for that entire accident.
[109]
So you may hear those numbers refer to as
[112]
is it 25 or 20?
[113]
Usually it's 30/60/25 is what you might hear
[116]
and that's what those stand for.
[118]
So are those minimums enough for the average person
[121]
or should you consider going higher than that?
[123]
Definitely recommend going higher even though
[125]
no insurance is worse
[127]
than minimum limit.
[128]
So minimum limits is what
[129]
you can afford that's better than nothing,
[131]
but usually it doesn't cost,
[133]
you know a few more dollars to double those limits
[135]
and if you think about,
[137]
you know what if that car you side-swept it was a Tesla?
[140]
That $25,000 is not gonna go very far.
[143]
Right.
[144]
So we definitely want to recommend
[146]
increasing those as far as you can.
[149]
consider, what you can afford.
[152]
Again it's a combination of what you can afford,
[155]
versus what you're buying there.
[156]
So that covers somebody else's car that I've
[159]
damaged but liability that doesn't do anything for
[161]
my vehicle correct?
[163]
Correct.
[163]
So what do I get to cover my car?
[167]
So usually what you purchase is collision
[169]
and comprehensive coverage.
[170]
Collision coverage kind of does what it says.
[173]
It pays for your car if it's damaged from
[175]
colliding with anything.
[178]
And then comprehensive coverage covers anything else.
[181]
So that covers...
[182]
anything else?
[184]
Things out of your control. Maybe not anything else,
[186]
but it covers things like theft,
[188]
and it covers things like hail.
[190]
nonaccident kind of things that could happen?
[191]
Yes. Exactly it does cover if you hit an animal,
[194]
so just be aware of that,
[197]
that sometimes not covered by collision.
[199]
I think those terms are some that people
[201]
sometimes cross or get confused comp,
[204]
comprehensive, collision because they,
[206]
they sound the same, they're both long C words,
[209]
but they generally come in a package, right?
[211]
Usually. Most companies offer them together and
[214]
there's a deductible usually.
[215]
They're $500 or a $1,000 deductible.
[218]
So you set that and that helps
[220]
determine how much you'll pay monthly,
[222]
but also what happens after an accident
[224]
Yes, so make sure that deductible that you set
[227]
is something that you feel comfortable paying
[229]
if you had an accident tomorrow.
[230]
And we talked about cost a little bit but,
[232]
when you get into beyond liability,
[234]
into comp and collision and things like that,
[236]
you are talking about higher cost for yourself.
[238]
Yes. It's more coverage so it is more cost,
[240]
but if you have a lien holder
[242]
they might require you to have that,
[243]
so you probably want to budget that.
[246]
And also if
[247]
you know you're in an accident tomorrow, if you can't
[249]
pay to replace your car,
[250]
probably should think about having
[252]
collision and comprehensive on your policy.
[254]
Whether or not you're still paying on the car,
[256]
if you can't afford to replace it you might want to...
[259]
Yeah
[260]
... add that onto your monthly budget.
[261]
Exactly.
[262]
Okay. So that's a little bit about comp and collision
[265]
and the cost increases there.
[267]
Are there other kinds of coverage
[269]
that you might be offered when you start your
[271]
shopping for auto insurance?
[273]
Yeah there's a few others.
[274]
So first of all we know
[276]
that 12% of the cars out there on the highway actually
[278]
don't have liability insurance.
[280]
So if they hit you, there might not be any coverage
[283]
for your injuries or your car.
[285]
That's an uncovered, uninsured driver.
[287]
Uninsured drivers. So it's uninsured or
[289]
underinsured motorist coverage is the name of it.
[292]
Definitely recommend that.
[293]
If you're injured, that pays for you and your passengers.
[296]
It also pays to fix your car.
[298]
Now what's the difference between uninsured and
[300]
underinsured? Is that about the limits again?
[303]
Yeah so it's about the limits again.
[306]
Someone is
[307]
obviously uninsured if they have no insurance.
[309]
If they're underinsured, maybe they just
[311]
have that 30/60/25 that we talked about,
[314]
and that's not enough to cover your
[316]
full amount of damages so.
[317]
So that person has their legal responsibilities covered,
[320]
but you're still not made whole so you might want to
[322]
add a little coverage on top of that.
[324]
Exactly, yes.
[325]
Other things that they might
[326]
encounter when they're shopping for insurance.
[329]
Specialty items?
[331]
There's a few other optional coverages.
[333]
So there's a medical payments and personal injury
[336]
protection that covers you and your passengers
[338]
for your medical payments like it says.
[341]
Personal injury...
[342]
Where does that come into play?
[343]
Is that during the uninsured driver is that
[346]
just medical not covered with your
[348]
regular insurance and your comp and collision
[350]
So that, yeah it's not covered under
[351]
your comp and collision, but that's covered,
[354]
that covers even if you're at fault,
[356]
if you're not at fault,
[357]
either way it's just a little bit of
[359]
medical payments coverage
[361]
for you and your passengers.
[362]
Okay.
[363]
And so those are some things that you can consider.
[365]
Lots of different items.
[366]
Again, liability is what the law recovers,
[369]
requires of you,
[371]
but if you want to raise those coverages
[373]
you may have to pay more. But again,
[375]
you may need to you need that coverage.
[377]
So think about those kinds of things,
[379]
like Nicole said at the beginning,
[381]
you can't just go on the bottom line because
[384]
there are situations where you might want that coverage.
