[0]
if you ask a person who is a pro聽 in stock market as to dude what聽聽
[4]
the short selling he'll say it's so聽 simple first sell when the price is聽聽
[8]
high and when the price falls then聽 buy and you will be like first sell聽聽
[13]
high then buy "Asa Kasa Kay?? rhyming right ? Hi guys CA Rachana Ranade here and I welcome聽聽
[30]
you all to a brand new lecture on short selling聽 actually have covered this concept in my basics of聽聽
[36]
stock market lecture series so just in case if you聽 have not yet checked it out please go ahead and聽聽
[41]
check out my entire lecture series when I received聽 a lot of queries from people as to ma'am could you聽聽
[46]
just elaborate a little bit more could you give聽 us a little bit more examples on how it happens聽聽
[51]
practically what type of order if we choose it聽 then how it impacts the entire short selling聽聽
[57]
if you can elaborate it a little bit more then it聽 would be beneficial for us these were some kind of聽聽
[62]
feedbacks I received on my course and I thought聽 why not make a separate lecture which details a聽聽
[68]
little bit more about short selling and that's why聽 I'm going to start about short selling right away聽
[72]
So first let's understand the very base concept聽 of what is short selling ok so in short selling聽聽
[81]
like I told in the very first section of聽 the video here the sequence of transaction聽聽
[86]
is exactly opposite ok first let's understand聽 a general transaction what how does a general聽聽
[91]
transaction takes take place first you buy why聽 do you buy? You feel that the prices will go up聽聽
[97]
that is why you buy okay so first you buy let聽 us say you buy a stock 100 rupees and you feel聽聽
[101]
that the stock price is going to go up that's聽 why you wait until it goes up assume it goes up聽聽
[106]
to 120 right then what will happen tell me at 120聽 you will sell it off correct what is your profit聽聽
[111]
120 which is your selling price minus 100 which is聽 your cost price but chronologically what happened聽聽
[117]
first first you bought at 100 then you sold at 120聽 this is normal buying okay when would you do such聽聽
[123]
kind of a normal buying when you are bullish on聽 the market when you feel that is markets will go聽聽
[126]
up okay what is the situation right now as I'm聽 recording a video everyone is of the hope that聽聽
[134]
some point of time in the near future market will聽 see some level of correction right at this point聽聽
[139]
it becomes a little bit tricky as to how can I聽 earn money in falling markets I will repeat the聽聽
[145]
sentence very important how can I earn money in聽 falling markets so you feel that this stock is聽聽
[150]
currently at let us say 150 rupees right now XYZ聽 some stock is at 150 rupees right now and you feel聽聽
[156]
that this stock will definitely come down to 120聽 is what you feel so are you bullish or bearish or聽聽
[161]
bearish on this stock okay so what can you do a聽 normal person who doesn't know short selling he聽聽
[167]
will wait wait and watch till the stock comes down聽 to 120 and then he will enter at 120 but if you're聽聽
[173]
a smart investor what will you do you will sell聽 first at 150 and when the price goes down at 120聽聽
[180]
you will buy so what happened in this transaction聽 in this transaction you sold something which you聽聽
[185]
did not have what yes right you sold something聽 which you did not have and when the prices went聽聽
[192]
down from 150 to 120 that is when you bought聽 it back okay for such a transaction you need聽聽
[199]
to place an MIS order okay so always remember聽 this whenever you are doing a short selling聽聽
[205]
place an MIS order but what is this MIS order聽 you want to check it out in the next section.
[211]
Okay now let us understand what is MIS MIS means聽 Margin Intraday Settlement okay the word itself聽聽
[219]
says it's an intraday settlement so what happens聽 in an intraday settlement you're going to buy and聽聽
[223]
sell both on the same day but again remember聽 what is the key feature of short-selling sell聽聽
[229]
high and then when it goes low then buy so step聽 number one is sell step number two is buy but聽聽
[234]
when it is going to be an intraday situation聽 okay so it has to be done during the market as聽聽
[239]
only everyone knows that the market us are from聽 9:15 in the morning to 3:30 in the afternoon聽聽
[244]
but please be aware that these MIS transactions聽 are squared off by various brokers at their own聽聽
[252]
time slots okay like there'll be many brokers聽 who will auto square it off at 3:10 okay so聽聽
[258]
if you so let's take it take this as an example聽 the previous case which were taking that at one聽聽
[263]
hundred and fifty rupees you had sold a specific聽 stock okay and unfortunately it doesn't come down聽聽
[268]
but it was higher okay it goes 160 are you at a聽 loss now yes how much lost 10 rupees per share聽聽
[274]
okay now you are sad you're feeling like maybe聽 in another 10 20 minutes it will come down but聽聽
[279]
broker will not wait till then broker will聽 automatically square it off at 3:10 okay聽聽
[284]
there are some brokers like Zerodha who give聽 you that additional 10 minutes so brokers like聽聽
[289]
Zerodha will squareoff of the transaction at 3:20聽 okay so that additional 10 minutes of hope you聽聽
[295]
can have that may be the share price will come聽 below 150 and you may make certain profit okay聽聽
[301]
but then the whole question now I hope you have聽 understood this as to what is MIS but still one聽聽
[306]
question I'm sure remains in your mind that if聽 I don't have a share how am I able to sell it?
[313]
So let me try to answer this question in the聽 most simplified manner we'll take an example聽聽
[317]
for this okay so assume that you are wanting to聽 sell a share first because you feel that will go聽聽
[323]
down okay assume that you sell hundred quantity聽 of a specific stock okay then generally many of聽聽
[329]
the brokers would put a minus sign here because聽 you were selling it now so first it will be minus聽聽
[334]
hundred whenever you are selling it assume that聽 you sold it at a price of let us say 150 rupees聽聽
[339]
okay after 1 hour the same stock is trading at 140聽 rupees let us say so what will happen when you buy聽聽
[348]
see when you sold it was minus quantity now you聽 didn't have anything but when you buy it it will聽聽
[352]
be what, plus hundred quantity okay and now tell聽 me what is the net effect you sold hundred and you聽聽
[359]
bought hundred so what is your net quantity at聽 the end of the day remember this I had told you聽聽
[366]
MIS this is very important for any short selling聽 what is MIS Margin Intraday Settlement the word聽聽
[372]
it says this is to be done on the same day same聽 day first it was minus hundred when you sold the聽聽
[377]
quantity now the last hundred when you bought it聽 so what happened at the end of the day and then聽聽
[382]
end of the day do you have to sell your shares to聽 anyone do you have to buy it from anyone else no聽聽
[387]
final is zero position what about this 10 rupees聽 this 10 rupees would nothing be but your profit聽聽
[395]
okay because you had sold it at 150 and you bought聽 it back at 140 so 10 rupees in fact is your profit聽聽
[401]
but still some people are scary but how come how聽 come someone can allow you to sell first if you聽聽
[407]
don't have it answer is very simple for this our聽 Government allows it our regulatory body allows聽聽
[412]
it so what's the problem so in India everyone聽 knows this that SEBI is the authority which is a聽聽
[419]
regulator to the stock market okay SEBI allows聽 short selling in India in fact in 2011 there聽聽
[426]
were some countries like France Spain Italy and聽 Belgium who had banned short selling okay simple聽聽
[434]
so if these countries banned short selling for聽 some time this was at least 2011 example let us聽聽
[440]
example at meeting during Corona time China had聽 banned short selling in some specific commodities聽聽
[447]
in in some indices okay so if if that was done by聽 a specific country if a country bans short-selling聽聽
[454]
then it will not be allowed in fact at that聽 time there were great rumours at India also聽聽
[458]
may ban short-selling okay so had our Government聽 banned it could it have been bad answer is yes so聽聽
[464]
how are we allowed to do short selling in India聽 right now because it is allowed by our regulator聽聽
[469]
but what does our regulator say very important聽 that you have to cover it within the same day you聽聽
[475]
have to do it as an intraday settlement okay聽 now have you understood how can I do it what聽聽
[481]
is answer how is it a lot simple our government聽 allows it a regulator allows it and that is why聽聽
[485]
we are able to do it but what is the precondition聽 it has to be done within the same day question is聽聽
[490]
what if I don't put this by order I have given聽 you the answer in the previous section at 3:20聽聽
[497]
I gave you the example of Zerodha at 3:20聽 they'll do an auto square off okay so I hope聽聽
[502]
this point is clear one last question still to be聽 answered that I drew it in the next section okay聽
[509]
The last question which remains in my mind okay聽 now I'm thinking of two questions which remain in聽聽
[514]
my mind number one when I buy the share at the end聽 of the day okay so either as an automatic square聽聽
[520]
of or either I place a buy order myself there are聽 some viewers of mine who had asked this question聽聽
[526]
to me that when I buy that share again will I get聽 the delivery of those shares how will you get a聽聽
[531]
delivery as I mentioned it's minus hundred first聽 and then plus hundred so what is your net position聽聽
[536]
that position is zero if your net position would聽 have been plus something then you would have聽聽
[542]
gotten the delivery of the shares okay so I hope聽 this is clear for example if you sell 100 shares聽聽
[548]
okay and if you buy 120 shares now what is your聽 net position net position is plus 20 then for聽聽
[554]
that additional 20 you may get the delivery of the聽 shares but again we'll go into complications for聽聽
[559]
this that what was your 120 order was it MIS order聽 was it CNC order by the way CNC is cash-and-carry聽聽
[566]
okay but we will not go into a mismatch quantity聽 mismatch example because that will take again聽聽
[571]
a bunch whole lot of time to explain this to聽 simplify things will you get a delivery of the聽聽
[576]
shares if you have sold first and bought later聽 no if the net position is zero okay I hope this聽聽
[583]
point is clear one last point what if you sold at聽 150 okay stock hits an upper circuit I hope you聽聽
[593]
know what is an upper circuit upper circuit is a聽 scenario where the stock moves up let us say five聽聽
[598]
percent okay so assume that the stock opened at聽 150 you sold at 150 the stock goes to 180 and it聽聽
[605]
gets locked at 180 okay now what what happens at a聽 per circuit there are all buyers but no sellers so聽聽
[613]
I hope this point is clear a little bit quickly聽 one more time okay so you're sold at what 150聽聽
[618]
what happened the share price went up to 180 now聽 the share is locked at an upper circuit what is聽聽
[623]
an upper circuit all buyers but no sellers you聽 are one of the buyers who is desperately you're聽聽
[628]
dying to buy the share but there is no seller now聽 what happens this is the point where your share聽聽
[633]
gets auctioned okay now what is share auction is聽 again a very big discussion but still I will try聽聽
[638]
to cut it short okay share auction is nothing but聽 now a scenario where you sold it but you are not聽聽
[646]
able to buy it neither at 3:00, 3:05, 3:10 nor聽 at 3:20 also ok market closes at 3:30 still you聽聽
[655]
have not bought back the position you have not聽 squared off your position so tell me what what聽聽
[659]
happens now was it - 100 yes was it +100 also no聽 now what is the net quantity net quantity is still聽聽
[666]
-100 now you have to buy it come what may and聽 honor your contract but market has closed it is聽聽
[673]
3:30 now what happens is that your broker buys the聽 shares on your behalf after 3:30 okay so there is聽聽
[682]
a time slot after 3:30 for another half an hour聽 we're only brokers are allowed to participate聽聽
[687]
people like you and me retailers are not allowed聽 to participate these guys would try to buy those聽聽
[693]
hundred shares which were short and they'll buy聽 it on my behalf okay so at whatever price they聽聽
[698]
buy it let us say I'd sold it at 150 right and聽 this guy buys it at 170 now now what is my loss聽聽
[704]
my loss will be 20 rupees per share okay how聽 did this take place this took place in a normal聽聽
[711]
market or did it take place in an auction market聽 answer is it took place in an auction market聽聽
[716]
okay this was a very short discussion on what is聽 auction market it's a whole lot of a discussion聽聽
[721]
if you want me to make a separate video on聽 auction market of course you can let me know聽聽
[726]
otherwise if you want to quickly know about it聽 as I mentioned I have explained this completely聽聽
