Exploiting a FanDuel Mistake For Big Money | NFL Reverse Teasers - YouTube

[0]
there is one thing that i learned back in third聽 grade that i use to beat sports betting markets聽聽
[5]
today and i'm going to tell you exactly what聽 that is but first hi i'm jack from unabated.com聽聽
[13]
and i make sports betting educational content both聽 here on youtube as well as at unabated the goal is聽聽
[20]
to help you understand this exciting world of聽 sports betting and to help you help yourself
[31]
whether you are a professional sports bettor or聽 you are just aspiring to be one your method of聽聽
[36]
finding angles is a never-ending pursuit oddly聽 the best advice i ever picked up on finding聽聽
[42]
angles came from renowned video poker expert bob聽 dancer in his book million dollar video poker bob聽聽
[48]
talks about a former partner who would just walk聽 around casinos endlessly looking for new angles聽聽
[54]
it is the needle in the haystack type聽 of method that seems too tedious to most聽聽
[59]
bettors however it's also a trait that many聽 successful professional sports bettors have聽聽
[65]
i'm a big fan of the scientific method it is聽 a concept you were probably taught in grade聽聽
[69]
school but you've rarely thought about since聽 perhaps this illustration will jog your memory
[78]
that chart takes me back to third grade where a聽聽
[81]
similar diagram was crudely constructed聽 with construction paper and stencils聽聽
[85]
on a bulletin board in our classroom the聽 first step in the scientific method is to聽聽
[91]
observe as an aspirational sharp better the聽 best thing you can do to kick-start your career聽聽
[98]
is to constantly be observing have you ever聽 looked at every bet available at the sportsbook聽聽
[104]
every single bet dig down into each sport and聽 into each game some of these books have hundreds聽聽
[111]
of available bets on each game now that is a聽 lot of surface area for a sports book to defend聽聽
[118]
it is in these nooks and crannies that you can聽 sometimes find something they don't realize is聽聽
[123]
beatable sometimes it's a mispriced line and yes聽 that's always nice to find however more valuable聽聽
[130]
is when they have a systematic misunderstanding of聽 what they're offering and how it should be priced聽聽
[136]
usually this occurs when a sportsbook is the only聽 one to offer a certain wager there is not a market聽聽
[142]
price to help guard rail their pricing those are聽 the situations that can be extremely lucrative
[153]
i'm often reluctant to go into specifics about聽 various angles the world of advantage play is聽聽
[159]
pretty cyclical and while it's rare for a casino聽 or sportsbook to make the same mistake twice聽聽
[164]
it is commonplace for other casinos and聽 sportsbooks to fail to learn from another's error聽聽
[170]
often i can reuse an angle at a different operator聽 later so best not to tip my hand however i'll make聽聽
[176]
an exception here because it is a good example聽 of what it takes to exploit a mistake at the聽聽
[183]
beginning of this nfl season i was poking around聽 fanduel i decided to see if they had any changes聽聽
[188]
to their teaser pricing and they made that easy聽 to spot with this new flag on their teasers button聽聽
[195]
now their teaser pricing wasn't great they used to聽 offer a two-team six-point teaser for -120 which聽聽
[201]
was average and a three-team plus 160 which was聽 decent however i noticed i could adjust the number聽聽
[208]
of points in the teaser up or down up to plus 14聽 points and down to what's this minus six points聽聽
[218]
fanduel was trying out the old reverse teaser聽 or pleaser as it's sometimes known the reverse聽聽
[224]
teaser is almost always a sucker bet instead聽 of getting six points on each leg of your聽聽
[229]
parlay you give up six points on each leg聽 in exchange for that you get some long odds聽聽
[234]
i first became familiar with the reverse teaser聽 in delaware when they had their nfl parlay cards聽聽
[241]
fortunately it didn't take long to realize聽 that they were a bad bet in delaware聽聽
[245]
you're just giving up too much value聽 in exchange for the odds they offered聽聽
[249]
i decided to compare the odds though i still聽 had some old reverse teaser cards from delaware聽聽
[254]
and it appeared they pay plus two thousand or聽 twenty to one on a three team reverse teaser in聽聽
[260]
delaware but now here on fanduel they paid plus聽 twenty eight hundred or twenty eight to one hmm聽聽
[268]
that seems like a pretty big discrepancy聽 this is going to be worth a closer look
[277]
as a professional sports bettor my method聽 for analyzing any wager is to first figure聽聽
[282]
out what i was up against i needed to know what聽 the break-even point was on the fanduel wager聽聽
[288]
now i outlined this technique in an article i聽 wrote on unabated.com about building profitable聽聽
[292]
teaser bets i'll link that article below聽 now since this was a three team wager聽聽
[298]
and it paid 28 to 1 we take the cube root of the聽 implied probability of the payout you convert聽聽
[304]
the odds to implied probability and then well聽 here's what the excel formula would look like聽聽
[311]
so now what this is saying is we would need a聽 32.55 implied probability or plus 207 odds or聽聽
[319]
better on each leg to make these bets a positive聽 expected value now this compared well versus what聽聽
[325]
i was up against in delaware back in the聽 day that was 36.24 as a break-even point聽聽
[332]
however i still wasn't optimistic it's tough to聽 subtract six points from either side of any nfl聽聽
[337]
line and not pass through at least one key number聽 we would definitely want to avoid situations where聽聽
[343]
we'd be giving up too much value instead of聽 just focusing on three team wagers i also ran聽聽
[348]
the numbers on the two team wagers they had a聽 six point wager which paid nine to one a six聽聽
[355]
and a half point wager which paid ten to one and聽 a seven point wager which paid eleven to one and聽聽
[361]
here's how those numbers looked suddenly聽 it's starting to become a little bit more聽聽
[366]
interesting these odds felt beatable to me the聽 same factors that make a teaser bet profitable聽聽
[374]
would make a reverse teaser bet unprofitable聽 likewise the same things that make teaser bets聽聽
[379]
bad would make reverse teaser bets good and in聽 that pro building profitable teaser bets article聽聽
[386]
that i referenced i outlined some teaser traps聽 to avoid these include teasing through the zero聽聽
[393]
teasing totals and teasing other sports all of the聽 things that would make a regular teaser a bad bet聽聽
[399]
are the things i would be looking to do in a聽 reverse teaser so i started poking around now聽聽
[405]
what's this i could play these reverse teasers聽 on college football well now things are really聽聽
[410]
looking good but i kept poking and that's when聽 i discovered i could play these reverse teasers聽聽
[415]
on totals mind officially blown there's got to be聽 an edge here now i just need to quantify my edge
[428]
using the alt line calculator at unabated i was聽 quickly able to get an accurate price on every聽聽
[434]
game on the board with regards to subtracting聽 six six and a half or seven points i found that聽聽
[439]
totals were by far preferable how good was it聽 well consider these two week one nfl match-ups聽聽
[446]
pittsburgh buffalo over under 48.5 points and聽 cleveland kansas city over under 54.5 points聽聽
[454]
now when i enter the pittsburgh buffalo game聽 in the alt line calculator and look for a total聽聽
[460]
seven points worse than the market line it tells聽 me that the correct price would be plus 234 now聽聽
[467]
remember i already figured out that anything with聽 odds shorter than plus 247 was going to be good聽聽
[473]
now entering the cleveland kansas city game in聽 was even better over 61 and a half which is seven聽聽
[479]
points from the posted 54 and a half total well聽 that was plus 204 to find out what that two team聽聽
[485]
teasers true price would be we convert the implied聽 probability and then multiply them together and聽聽
[490]
then convert it back so plus 234 is equal to聽 29.94 percent and plus 204 is equal to 32.89聽聽
[499]
by the way if you aren't sure how to聽 convert from odds to implied probability聽聽
[503]
i have a video on that from last year that i'll聽 link above but you can use various tools around聽聽
[508]
the web to get this done for you as well now let's聽 multiply those two numbers together and we get聽聽
[515]
9.85 percent so we're getting paid 11 to 1 on a聽 wager that will win about 9.85 percent of the time聽聽
[525]
that's a very healthy 18.17 edge in聽 our favor this is going to be fun
[535]
i repeated the same exercise for聽 every other game on the schedule聽聽
[539]
and then took the top 10 best candidates ranked聽 by ev or expected value and i set out to round聽聽
[546]
robin all of them together i would be betting聽 each two team permutation of these 10 teams聽聽
[552]
well that created 45 wagers now the nice聽 thing about round robin would be that while聽聽
[558]
my expectation was to win only about 10 percent聽 of the time on each bet by making more bets i聽聽
[564]
was more likely to come close to that expectation聽 i even got a bit frisky and i tossed in this gem
[576]
now this bet would have returned nine hundred聽 ninety nine thousand and sixty dollars on a 9.99聽聽
[584]
wager had it won and in case you're wondering my聽 odds of winning were point zero zero two percent聽聽
[591]
or fifty thousand to one however that bet paid a聽 hundred thousand to one which makes it decidedly聽聽
[598]
plus ev now i'm not going to lie i had dreams聽 of darren rovell tweeting about how a better聽聽
[605]
turn ten dollars into one million and he'd track聽 me down and interview me and i could turn the聽聽
[609]
whole thing into a commercial for unabated聽 sort of like what some of you are probably聽聽
[614]
think this video is doing but stick with me聽 there is still a lesson to be learned here
[623]
well as you can see the results in聽 week one were abysmal to say the least聽聽
[628]
just two of the teams won so out of those 45 two聽 team permutations my lone winning wager paid 11聽聽
[637]
to one but the week was obviously a pretty big聽 loss however i was actually ecstatic about this聽聽
[645]
not as happy as had i won but if fanduel cleaned聽 up on these bets in week one they're likely to聽聽
[651]
get a false sense of security in how they perform聽 going forward i'm not sure how they didn't catch聽聽
[657]
their own math mistake here but at this point i聽 was focused on getting down as much as possible聽聽
[662]
as long as i could undeterred by the previous聽 results and bolstered by the edge that the聽聽
[668]
alt line calculator said i had i pressed on in聽 week two now the week two card was even better聽聽
[674]
than week one in terms of value as there were 12聽 candidates that were just too good to ignore that聽聽
[680]
created 66 permutations five of the 12 games won聽 well that meant that 10 out of the 66 wagers won聽聽
[690]
this made up for week one losses and the project聽 was officially in the black however the walls were聽聽
[696]
beginning to close in fanduel started to institute聽 aggregate limits on teams so your total exposure聽聽
[702]
on a single team couldn't surpass a certain聽 figure this would hamper round robin in weeks聽聽
[706]
with more candidates and also made me suspicious聽 that they would look deeper into the betting聽聽
[713]
now week 3 had 11 candidates and 4 of聽 them won that meant a profitable 6 out聽聽
[719]
of 55 permutation wagers i actually had聽 to pass on a couple permutations because聽聽
[724]
the aggregate limit but fortunately for me they聽 were all losing combinations so my profit on week聽聽
[730]
three was actually a little stronger than expected聽 i started to think of ways that i could try to get聽聽
[735]
around the aggregate limit however i'd soon find聽 out that those efforts weren't going to matter
[745]
when i began checking for bets in week four聽 i quickly realized that fanduel had finally聽聽
[749]
spotted the error of their ways they drastically聽 changed the pricing for their reverse teasers聽聽
[754]
and the new pricing for two team wagers were not聽 good this change was enough to eliminate almost聽聽
[763]
all candidates from contention they also聽 modified the payout on college football聽聽
[768]
even more drastically it went from a fifteen聽 to twenty percent edge on most combinations聽聽
[773]
to a minus five percent or lower expectation聽 now of course just with regular teasers there聽聽
[780]
are still a couple scenarios where even with聽 these reduced odds you'd have a small edge聽聽
[786]
and hey if you want a data mine for profitable聽 scenarios be my guest but just be aware that聽聽
[792]
you won't be making as many wagers and so聽 you have to be prepared for the variance聽聽
[798]
in the end the entire profit making process was聽 largely all thanks to that scientific method that聽聽
[804]
i learned in grade school you see i observed聽 what was available on the sportsbook site聽聽
[812]
this led to questioning whether this could聽 be a positive ev situation based on what i聽聽
[818]
had seen years before on those parley cards聽 in delaware i researched what the profitable聽聽
[824]
break-even point would be for the wager and then聽 i hypothesized that what made standard teasers bad聽聽
[830]
could make reverse teasers good experimentation聽 with the unabated alt line calculator pointed聽聽
[836]
me to value in the market i concluded that聽 fanduel was offering a great wager and now聽聽
[843]
i'm reporting it to you taking a few minutes to聽 look into every bet available at your sportsbook聽聽
[849]
can be a very profitable experience a good聽 professional sports bettor uses this method to聽聽
[855]
look at every scenario and tries to envision a way聽 that this could be a profitable situation for them聽聽
[862]
then they go about trying to find when those聽 profitable situations might arise if i had one聽聽
[869]
regret from the above example it would be that聽 i didn't maximize my profitability i could have聽聽
[875]
pushed it harder i could have applied more art聽 to the situation instead of just the science聽聽
[881]
but that post-mortem thinking is actually聽 improving my approach the next time聽聽
[886]
a similar situation might present itself you see聽 it's all part of that final step of the scientific聽聽
[891]
method the reporting perhaps you spotted ways聽 you could have improved on my process as well聽聽
[898]
and if you have well then congratulations you聽 are on your way to using the scientific method聽聽
[904]
to improve your betting well that's it for聽 this video if you enjoyed this give it a聽聽
[910]
thumbs up that lets youtube know that this聽 is the type of content you like to see and聽聽
[915]
subscribe because that lets me know that people聽 would like to see more from me there's plenty聽聽
[920]
more to find over at unabated.com and until聽 next time go out there and win some wagers
