Vision, Mission, Purpose: What's The Difference? - YouTube

Vision, mission, purpose.
[1]
They nest on top of each
other, they go together
[4]
or better said it starts
with that purpose.
[7]
That clear reason for why we exist
[10]
and then concentric circles out.
[12]
How are we going to achieve that why
[15]
and what is the world going
[16]
to look like when we achieve that why.
[28]
Purpose statements, mission
statements, vision statements.
[31]
It can get really cluttered really fast.
[33]
It seems like every organization
has a different offering
[37]
when it comes to declaring their purpose.
[39]
Some just have a mission statement.
[40]
Some have a mission and
vision, some have a purpose.
[42]
Some use some other term to
describe a little bit of prose
[45]
that they put on a plaque in the office
[47]
or in the front of a 10-K report.
[49]
And if you go from
organization to organization,
[51]
you can get really confused
because the definitions change.
[55]
There's a lot of clutter out there
[57]
and we're gonna cut
through that clutter today.
[59]
Today, we're gonna talk
about about the difference
[60]
between purpose, mission and vision.
[63]
How they interrelate to each other.
[65]
How they affect each other.
[67]
Whether or not you even need all three
[69]
or whether or not you can cut through
[70]
that clutter with one simple statement
[73]
that accomplishes all three.
[75]
First though, I gotta
clear up some clutter here.
[77]
This is where we've been doing homeschool
[79]
with our kids for the last couple weeks.
[80]
Let me clean that up.
[82]
So let's start with the big one.
[83]
Let's start with vision.
[86]
What is a vision?
[89]
And a vision statement,
[91]
is really a statement of
what the future looks like.
[95]
It's a statement of where you are headed.
[97]
A vision statement describes what
[99]
if you achieve your mission
if you serve your purpose,
[102]
and we'll get to those in a little bit.
[104]
What that is going to look like.
[107]
These are my wedding
china plates by the way,
[110]
I have no idea how they got down here.
[112]
And the thing about vision is that
[114]
by nature it is aspirational.
[117]
It can be five years out,
10 years out, 20 years out,
[119]
100 years out, but it's
about what you aspire
[123]
to make the world look like.
[125]
All leadership involves
change to some extent
[127]
and your vision is a picture
[130]
of what the world looks
like when you have finished
[134]
that change.
[135]
Now by definition,
vision can't stand alone,
[138]
because vision is about what you want
[140]
to change the world to look like.
[141]
All leadership is about change.
[144]
And so vision is what happens
after you achieve that change.
[148]
But there has to be what you're doing
[149]
inside of that in order to
make the vision a reality.
[154]
That's where mission comes into play.
[156]
Your mission on the other hand
answers the question, how?
[160]
How are we gonna make
that vision a reality?
[161]
What are we going to be about?
[163]
What activities are we engaged
in on a day to day basis?
[167]
And also what are the long term objectives
[169]
that will help us make that vision happen?
[172]
Now mission can be
[173]
where you talk about
how lives are changed.
[176]
Mission can be how you talk
about how objectives are won.
[178]
Mission can even be products
or service that you sell.
[181]
A lot of great mission
statements put a specific number.
[183]
We're gonna change this many
lives or whatever it is.
[186]
The point is that mission
answers that question, how?
[190]
How are we gonna make
that vision into reality?
[193]
So if your vision is what
the world's gonna look like,
[195]
when you've achieved your mission.
[197]
Your mission obviously sets inside of it.
[200]
It is the how do the visions what,
[203]
but we still haven't
answered all of the questions
[205]
that we need to answer in order
[207]
to have an intrinsically motivating set,
[209]
mission, vision, purpose.
[211]
Something that's actually
gonna inspire employees
[213]
to see the connection between the work,
[215]
the drudgery maybe they're
asked to do every single day,
[218]
and how they're actually
effecting a positive change
[221]
in the world.
[222]
There's one more element
we have to talk about.
[224]
We have to talk about purpose.
[226]
Purpose goes inside all of these.
[228]
Purpose is the why your
organization began.
[231]
Why it's on that journey.
[233]
What injustice in the world
is it seeking to right.
[236]
What opportunity is it
seeking to leverage.
[238]
It answers why you choose to exist.
[241]
What was the whole reason for
starting this organization?
[245]
Why's as can be answered with
[246]
that sort of founding
story some of the time,
[248]
but other times you need a
declarative statement of that
[251]
and we would call that declarative
statement, your purpose.
[254]
So now we can take all three together.
[256]
We started with this idea of vision.
[258]
What does the world look like
when you achieve the mission.
[261]
Which is the how are you going to put
[264]
into action your why,
your reason for existence.
[267]
These three nest nicely into
each other, let's take a look.
[271]
We have the vision,
[273]
this is the what.
[275]
We have the mission,
[279]
this is the how.
[280]
We have the purpose,
[283]
this is the why.
[285]
Vision, mission, purpose they nest
[287]
on top of each other, they go together
[290]
or better said it starts
with that purpose,
[293]
that clear reason for why we exist
[296]
and then concentric circles out,
[298]
how are we going to achieve that why
[301]
and what is the world going
[302]
to look like when we achieve that why.
[304]
Now, here's the key thing
that a lot of organizations
[307]
that have a vision, mission purpose,
[309]
or even just one of them still get wrong.
[311]
This still isn't the center of our circle.
[314]
Inside all three of
these circles are people.
[318]
The people that are in your charge.
[320]
You see, every great
leader didn't just start
[323]
with some flowery language
[325]
and try and sell it to other people.
[326]
They didn't just go on some off site
[328]
with the other senior
leaders and pay a consultant
[331]
to come up with this grandiose prose
[333]
of mission, vision and purpose.
[335]
No, great leaders, the
leaders that have run lasting
[338]
and sustainable changes in the world.
[340]
The revolutions the
reformations of the world.
[343]
They didn't cast a vision and try
[345]
and sell it to other people.
[346]
They found a way to put towards the vision
[349]
that was already in the hearts
and the minds of the people
[352]
that were in their charge.
[353]
And so that's where we need to start.
[355]
Purpose statement, mission
statement, vision statement,
[357]
all of the above or none of the above,
[359]
whatever you choose to
put on a glass plaque.
[362]
Now you know the terms
[363]
and you know how they ought to be used.
[365]
But more importantly you know
[367]
that these three alone are
necessary but insufficient.
[370]
See they all radiate out from people.
[371]
They radiate out from what is
[373]
on their hearts and their minds.
[374]
And so as a leader the
best thing you can do
[376]
is make sure your purpose,
mission or vision,
[379]
all of the above or none of the above,
[380]
answer one question for your people.
[383]
Whether you're looking to
get them to join the firm,
[385]
or whether they already
work for you and with you
[388]
and you're just looking
to get them inspired.
[390]
That question, what are we fighting for?
[393]
What is in the world that we're tired of
[395]
and we're willing to start changing?
[396]
What is it the world, we
wanna look to an injustice
[398]
and say no longer.
[400]
What is it in the world
[401]
that the whole world finds acceptable
[403]
that you refuse to accept?
[405]
Or what is the battle
[406]
that your customers or
stakeholders are fighting
[408]
that you help by your existence.
[411]
It all starts with what
your people are willing
[413]
to fight for and then from that answer
[415]
to the question, what are we fighting for?
[417]
Then we're safe to write
our purpose statement,
[419]
our mission statement
and our vision statement.
[421]
A vision statement again,
[423]
is what the world looks
like when we've achieved
[425]
or when we've won that fight.
[427]
Our mission is how we're
gonna win that fight.
[429]
Our purpose is that fight
[431]
and that purpose starts with people
[433]
and starts with a clear and
concise answer to the question.
[436]
What are we fighting for?
