i'm merrick reichman
[3]
and i'm now going to talk you through
[5]
all the aston martin cars that appear in
[7]
the james bond movies
[17]
i'm an industrial designer and i trained
[19]
as an automotive designer wanted to be a
[22]
designer all my life and have been
[23]
designing aston martin for 15 years
[26]
[Music]
[28]
db5 goldfinger 1964.
[32]
it was an evolution of the db4 very
[34]
successful car for us used in racing but
[37]
it was very mechanical in a way and the
[39]
consumer wanted more luxury bigger seats
[42]
electric windows therefore the wheelbase
[44]
had to grow and the car needed more
[45]
power
[46]
beauty comes through proportion the body
[48]
to window height the overall length to
[51]
the length of the cabin the width of the
[52]
car to the grill all fit within the
[54]
golden proportion you'll be using this
[56]
aston martin db5 with modifications
[60]
now pay attention please it's so
[62]
difficult to pick a favorite gadget from
[64]
the car but a few got to mention the
[66]
wheel spinners and the bulletproof
[67]
shield but really the tracking system
[69]
which was a form of satellite navigation
[72]
system way back in 64 advanced
[75]
technology we were inspired by the the
[78]
anniversary of goldfinger to make some
[81]
continuation cars so we made 25
[84]
continuation db5s that have all of the
[87]
gadgets that you would see in the movie
[89]
the only thing that was missing was the
[91]
actual
[92]
ejector seat system on an opening roof
[96]
one year later it was 1965 and
[98]
thunderball featuring the db5 again
[101]
goldfinger made db5 a huge success by
[104]
the time we got to
[106]
thunderball db5 was going out of
[108]
production because we oversold we could
[110]
only make 11 cars a week and there was a
[112]
demand for 50. there were no differences
[114]
between the db5 in goldfinger and
[117]
thunderball it was a year later and
[119]
actually we'd only just started
[121]
production of the db5 so it was so
[123]
successful in the prior movie that it
[125]
was used again and there were no
[126]
differences same colour same colour
[129]
interior
[131]
on her majesty's secret service 1969
[134]
with the aston martin dbs
[136]
bill townes or william towns was a
[138]
designer like myself for aston martin
[140]
and was responsible for the aston martin
[142]
dbs and some of the lagongas one of the
[145]
leaders really and a hero of mine
[147]
because he brought some of the americana
[149]
type design to the uk the layout with
[152]
this brilliant engine in the front and
[155]
where you sit relative to the engine
[157]
makes the car and gives it that presence
[159]
but it had real power
[162]
[Music]
[167]
i like
[168]
all of the movies
[170]
i particularly like this one because of
[173]
the change of pace the change of scenery
[175]
the lighting the actor the gadget i.e
[178]
the car the dbs didn't have gadgets
[180]
because the car itself was the gadget it
[182]
was incredibly modern powerful car a new
[185]
generation of aston martins but it did
[188]
have an armalite ar7 in the glove box
[192]
[Music]
[198]
diamonds are forever 1971 and briefly
[202]
the aston martin dbs
[204]
the dbs appears in diamonds are forever
[207]
with rocket missiles being loaded into
[209]
the bonnet it doesn't appear driving in
[211]
the movie at all
[213]
the living daylights in 1987 with the v8
[217]
volante
[218]
after an absence of eight films the
[220]
living day lights featured the aston
[222]
martin v8 volante in 1987. there is a
[226]
little bit of confusion about the actual
[228]
car that was in the living daylights
[230]
because it starts life as a v8 valente
[233]
which is a retracting soft top so an
[235]
open top car but it gets winterized i.e
[242]
then it becomes the coupe version so a
[245]
v8 the v8 can be driven in snowy and icy
[248]
conditions the addition of winter tires
[250]
spiked tires would allow bond to drift
[252]
and drive the car beautifully on snow
[254]
and ice the retractable outriggers is
[257]
probably the only request we haven't had
[259]
for any of our cars we've had lots of
[262]
requests for many other things obviously
[264]
ballistic protection stowage of
[267]
weapons etc but no one's ever asked for
[270]
outriggers i do think absence makes the
[272]
heart grow fonder and for sure bond
[275]
didn't feel right without his aston
[276]
martin so it came back
[278]
and everything felt fine again
[282]
goldeneye and 95 and that was the db5
[285]
again one of my favorite scenes in all
[288]
of the movies is
[289]
the red ferrari versus the silver birch
[292]
db5 through the alps
[294]
drifting around the corners it's just an
[296]
iconic piece of film i love it i could
[299]
watch it over and over and over again
[301]
the db5 that appears in golden art is
[304]
actually not the original car which was
[307]
bmt216a this is bmt214a
[311]
if you're watching the movie so it is a
[313]
different car i think with the right
[315]
driver on those roads
[317]
a db5 could beat a modern day ferrari
[321]
because
[322]
the roads are narrow the corners are
[324]
incredibly tight and if you could drift
[326]
a db5 around the corners for sure you'd
[329]
beat one of those ferraris
[334]
tamora never dies 1997 and the db5 cara
[338]
appears briefly in tomorrow never dies
[341]
parked in a street in oxford
[343]
and bond has to get from oxford down
[346]
into london
[349]
die another day in 2002 with the all-new
[351]
aston martin vanquish
[354]
the aston martin vanquish really was the
[356]
start of a new era for aston martin it
[358]
was bonded aluminium using carbon fibre
[362]
and so we weren't welding the frames
[363]
we're now bonding those frames i think
[366]
if you look at vanquish it it is a
[368]
really muscular car i mean it's a very
[371]
powerful car and it signified a big
[373]
change for aston martin but it's very
[375]
much a technology story and i think it
[378]
suited brosnan and the bond because this
[380]
bond was all about technology if we look
[383]
at the cloaking device used on vanquish
[386]
it really was based on a technology that
[388]
was being looked at by the defense
[390]
ministry so actually not so preposterous
[393]
it was an idea of disguising objects
[397]
through reflective shields
[400]
casino royale in 2006 with the aston
[403]
martin dbs
[405]
dbs was a derivation of our very
[408]
successful db9 it was a wider car by
[411]
about 40 millimeters much more inclusion
[414]
of carbon fibers we gave it a huge power
[417]
upgrade the suspension was different
[419]
sport seats
[421]
so that gear shift timing was all
[423]
changed it was a much faster response
[425]
time quad exhaust pipes wider car
[428]
lighter in weight more powerful much
[430]
more aggressive so when they started
[431]
filming we'd begun the prototype
[434]
development in fact barbara michael
[436]
wilson daniel craig came to the studio
[439]
to see the car in clay i wanted a more
[442]
muscular powerful language for aston
[445]
martin i wanted something that really
[447]
evoked the v12 that sat midships at the
[450]
front of the car and as i presented it
[453]
was clear that that character of bond
[456]
was also
[457]
needed as well that bond was becoming a
[459]
little bit more hard edged more cutting
[461]
edge and that fit perfectly to the
[464]
vision of dbs the gadgets in dbs were
[467]
quite special because we were actually
[469]
involved in the design studio developing
[471]
the gadgets so one of my favorites is
[474]
when he receives the car he gets a
[476]
crystal key in an envelope in a crystal
[478]
box then when he needs the car he uses a
[481]
defibrillator that we actually designed
[483]
in the studio shape where it would fit
[485]
how it would attach to the body the
[487]
colour the graphic language originally
[490]
the gun was pointing towards the
[492]
driver's seat so we switched the gun
[494]
around so bond could grab the gun easier
[497]
so a lot of fun was had developing the
[499]
gadgets
[502]
quantum of solace in 2008 with the dbs
[506]
there were some minor differences
[508]
between the dbs that appears in casino
[511]
royale and the dbs in quantum of solace
[513]
the color is very different so on
[516]
quantum of solace the car is a darker
[518]
gray than the casino royale car casino
[521]
royale's dbs was an early prototype and
[524]
by the time we got to 2008 and quantum
[527]
of solace it was a full-on production
[529]
car so the seats are slightly different
[532]
the makeup of the interior is slightly
[534]
different i was actually at
[536]
uh millbrook when the rollover scene was
[539]
filmed vesper eva green is laid across
[541]
the road and he has to swerve
[543]
and the car was meant to land on its
[546]
roof come to a halt and then obviously
[548]
bond would be captured but the first few
[551]
times it was filmed the stunt driver
[553]
couldn't get the car to unearth itself
[556]
to roll which you should be able to do
[558]
but our car was very stable and you
[561]
couldn't so they had to deploy a cannon
[563]
into the car which is a kind of cylinder
[565]
that fires down to the ground and flips
[567]
the car over and obviously you would
[569]
normally test and test to how much
[573]
power you need to flip the car this was
[575]
done very quickly just make it happen
[577]
and so fire the cannon and the car
[580]
flipped and flipped and flipped and did
[583]
a world record seven and a quarter turns
[586]
when it was only really intended to do
[588]
one
[590]
sky 4 with the db5 in 2012 if you look
[594]
at skyfall
[595]
bond drives m all the way from london to
[598]
the highlands of scotland which is a
[599]
long journey that's
[601]
probably an eight or nine hour journey
[603]
up into the highlands
[605]
it's not very comfortable is it
[606]
[Music]
[609]
are you going to complain the whole way
[611]
oh go on then reject me see if i can
[614]
m statement about the db5 not being very
[617]
comfortable
[618]
actually the seats are pretty
[619]
comfortable in the db5 and the seating
[622]
position is quite comfortable the cars
[624]
were created as as
[626]
gt cars so grand touring cars cars
[628]
designed for long journeys the
[630]
difference today is that there are so
[633]
many aids and and advances in terms of
[636]
technology smoothness quietness seat
[639]
comfort ventilation
[641]
that make our journey so much more
[643]
pleasurable the journey would have been
[645]
great then but you just wouldn't have
[646]
the creature comforts
[649]
spectre db10 and db5 in
[653]
2015.
[655]
so spectra featured the db10 which was
[657]
the first time that a car had been
[659]
designed just for james bond and for the
[661]
movie barbara broccoli michael wilson
[664]
daniel craig and sam mendes came to see
[667]
me in the studio and up on the wall i
[669]
happened to have a sketch of a future
[672]
car which then became vantage
[675]
which was
[676]
sat next to a mood image of a shark and
[679]
it was
[680]
the db10 and as we were coming out of
[682]
the studio
[684]
daniel and sam happened to see the
[685]
sketch and say
[687]
what's that can we see that i said well
[689]
you can't see that it's just a sketch
[691]
and sam mendez looked at me said
[694]
but what is it i said well it's it's our
[695]
hunter it's our sports car two seats
[698]
only very agile more sporting very
[701]
dramatic just a single line lots of
[704]
power and he just looked at me and said
[706]
well can we have 10 of those
[708]
and i looked at my team i said when do
[711]
you need them by september this was
[713]
april and i just said yes we can do it
[717]
my team fell over but we produced 10
[719]
cars to support the movie so not only
[722]
did bond get a unique car designed for
[725]
him he also got the mark of db10 and
[728]
only 10 were ever made if you notice it
[730]
it doesn't have
[732]
traditional air venting it's got kind of
[735]
dot matrix pattern air vents on on the
[737]
hood and in terms of gadgets it was very
[739]
much how we use the car and how we how
[742]
the the
[743]
theme of the movie inspired what the car
[745]
should look like particularly from the
[747]
inside and this was a bit of kind of
[750]
post-modernist addition of objects it
[753]
wasn't the smooth interior this time it
[755]
was putting random switches so it looked
[757]
as though someone had developed the car
[760]
like it was a prototype
[764]
oh yes that old thing is taking quite a
[767]
bit of time
[768]
so you see the db5 in the movie when
[771]
james first bought the db10 and on a
[774]
bench is a db5 which is being restored
[778]
back to its former glory and then the
[780]
very last scene is james driving off
[783]
into the london sunset off on a journey
[786]
in the db5
[788]
valhalla
[790]
dbs v8 and db5 it's no time to die 20 21
[796]
if you
[797]
look back to the prior movie driving off
[800]
into the sunset in the db5
[802]
cut to no time to die the first scenes
[805]
beautifully photographed and beautifully
[807]
shot through
[809]
the italian village materia and it kind
[811]
of sets up the language for the movie
[813]
and
[814]
new gadgets donuts with gatling guns
[817]
that come out of the headlamps are just
[819]
a superb scene in the movie
[824]
the v8 appears in no time to die and
[826]
actually when kerry came to the studio
[829]
he saw
[830]
the v8 and immediately fell in love with
[832]
it because i think if you're a film
[835]
director the car holds light beautifully
[838]
well its presence is it's dramatic i
[840]
think if we look at the v8 versus the
[843]
db5 for james bond for daniel craig in
[846]
particular in no time to die
[849]
it really is a transition point for him
[851]
his character in the movie
[853]
so without giving too much away he comes
[855]
to a lockup and unveils dramatically the
[858]
v8 it's almost a i'm back moment the car
[862]
immediately stays power
[866]
the dbs superleggero really again has
[869]
going back to quantum of solace with the
[871]
dbs it's a very similar color so it's a
[873]
much darker
[874]
xenon gray we call it and this
[877]
really doesn't have any gadgets it's the
[879]
car itself which again
[881]
for aston martin is a it's a bonded
[883]
aluminium chassis with an all carbon
[886]
fiber exterior v12 lots of power
[890]
valhalla has a cameo roll and it's seen
[893]
behind m as m is having a very serious
[896]
conversation and the car is in a wind
[898]
tunnel
[899]
so you're not quite sure what the car is
[901]
going to be used for maybe it's a gadget
[904]
itself i think as ever the biggest
[906]
challenge with producing four cars for a
[908]
movie is it's always time i mean there
[910]
are very very strict filming schedules
[913]
and and
[914]
scenes areas are booked well in advance
[917]
and the multiples of cars potentially no
[920]
support not even a fueling station it
[922]
really is a logistical challenge but
[924]
obviously the timing challenge of
[926]
preparing all of the cars getting them
[929]
on site
[930]
and being part of the movie
[938]
aston martin partnered with goldfinger
[940]
in 1964 originally and from then on it's
[943]
been an amazing journey with all the
[945]
cars that you see behind me
