so you're driving along and your check
[1]
engine light pops up you scan it and you
[4]
find that you have an evap code what
[6]
does that mean first you need to know
[15]
what the evap system does it's part of
[17]
the emission system that prevents fuel
[20]
vapors from entering the atmosphere here
[22]
is how most of the systems are set up
[25]
some components may be in a different
[27]
structure but the basics are the same
[29]
you all have the fuel tank and you have
[33]
the fuel vapors you have a gas cap you
[38]
have the e bap cannister you have an
[42]
evap vent and you have a purge solenoid
[46]
and then this would be where it connects
[49]
to the engine on the intake side and
[51]
also there may be a pressure sensor in
[54]
the fuel tank different vehicles have
[56]
them in different places sometimes they
[58]
may be over in this line or part of the
[60]
vent when the car starts and it wants to
[62]
engage the evap system what it's going
[65]
to do is send power and ground to the
[68]
vents which is normally open and it's
[72]
going to close that vent and the vapors
[75]
are in this area you want to keep them
[77]
out of getting out of the gas cap
[79]
they're going to go through the charcoal
[80]
canister but we want to put a vacuum on
[83]
this system so the computer is going to
[87]
command on this purge valve which is
[91]
going to open normally the purge valve
[93]
is closed that will open and we're going
[95]
to have a vacuum going towards the
[99]
intake and it's gonna pull the fuel
[102]
vapors into the canister this valve will
[105]
be closed at the time
[112]
and it's going to monitor the vacuum in
[115]
the system
[116]
to make sure that you don't have any
[118]
leaks this will close eventually and
[126]
with the vacuum in the system the
[128]
computer is going to monitor how long it
[131]
can hold that vacuum and if it can't
[133]
hold the vacuum then you're gonna get
[135]
your check engine light so if you have a
[137]
leak the first thing you want to check
[138]
is the gas cap unless you have an evap
[141]
circuit code it's always best to start
[144]
at the gas cap just grab the gas cap try
[149]
to pull on it to see if it's completely
[151]
loose and then loosen it up check the
[155]
seal see if it's dry rotted if it is
[159]
it's gonna need to be replaced and also
[162]
check the ratchet part of it if it
[165]
clicks or if it doesn't click however
[167]
the gas cap is set up if it's really
[170]
loose then it's probably not tightening
[172]
down and you could have a leak there the
[176]
other two problems that are pretty
[178]
common on most vehicles because they're
[180]
the only moving parts in the system is
[183]
the vent and also the purge valve most
[187]
vehicles the purge solenoid is going to
[189]
be somewhere near the intake it'll be a
[191]
valve like this it'll be wires connected
[194]
to it this hose goes to the back of the
[197]
vehicle and this hose right here goes to
[200]
the intake itself one way to test if
[203]
this valve is actually closing you can
[206]
take a vacuum pump put a vacuum on it it
[209]
should stay and it looks like it's
[211]
holding which is good if you have the
[213]
ability to take the scan tool and open
[215]
the valve you can plug this back in have
[218]
the scan tool open the valve and see if
[220]
it goes just to zero somewhere near the
[222]
fuel tank you're gonna have the EVAP
[224]
canister or the charcoal canister it's
[227]
located right here and near that is
[229]
gonna be the vent valve to check that
[231]
the best way to do it is to command it
[234]
on and off with a scan tool and see if
[236]
it opens in
[237]
so these are the three most common
[239]
problems to purge valve the vent valve
[241]
and the gas cap those are the three
[243]
moving parts these other components you
[246]
could always have a leak in the gas tank
[248]
if the fuel pump or anything is rusty a
[252]
lot of times those are gonna leak it's
[255]
hard to find a leak if it's not one of
[257]
those items you can be creative
[260]
sometimes soapy water works if you spray
[263]
something down it's gonna be hard to
[265]
pressurize it but I've seen just the
[266]
natural pressure of the gas tank cause
[269]
bubbles from the soapy water so that's
[273]
one way when at the dealership or most
[276]
automotive repair places they use a
[278]
smoke machine and they pour smoke into
[281]
here and try to find the leak it's not
[283]
that easy to find that way either but be
[286]
creative take a look at any of the lines
[289]
and just see if you see anything obvious
[291]
that's the most easy way to do it I hope
